Rural Community Members' Perspectives On Mental Health And Aging: An Ecological Approach To Interpreting And Applying Focus Group Results, Tina Kruger, Deborah Murray, Faika Zanjani

Journal of Extension

The Mental Healthiness and Aging Initiative was created to develop resources addressing the mental health needs of older adults, particularly those in rural areas. Community members participated in focus groups discussing mental health and aging. Themes that emerged included the desire to maintain independence, the importance of emotional health and intergenerational activities, the value of sharing one's life history, remaining active and engaged, being respected, and educating younger community members about aging. The results are discussed in terms of ecological applications. Extension agents should find this data useful for developing programs and materials to promote mental healthiness in their communities

Somatoform Disorder: Treatment Utilization And Cost By Mental Health Professions, Lori Barker Morton Mar 2011

Somatoform Disorder: Treatment Utilization And Cost By Mental Health Professions, Lori Barker Morton

Theses and Dissertations

Somatoform disorder is a prevalent mental health disorder in the United States. This disorder costs the United States one billion dollars annually. Medical providers report somatoform disorder is difficult to treat. Previous studies have shown that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is effective at reducing symptoms of somatoform disorder. Unfortunately, little research has been done on treatment outcomes and cost of somatoform disorder, particularly by profession to reduce health care costs for somatoform patients and providers. Administrative data from CIGNA for 149 somatoform disorder cases were analyzed to determine the cost, number of sessions, dropout rates, and recidivism rates for somatoform …

Estimating The Effects Of Immigration Status On Mental Health Care Utilizations In The United States, Jie Chen, Arturo Vargas-Bustamante Feb 2011

Estimating The Effects Of Immigration Status On Mental Health Care Utilizations In The United States, Jie Chen, Arturo Vargas-Bustamante

Publications and Research

Immigration status is a likely deterrent of mental health care utilization in the United States. Using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey and National Health Interview survey from 2002 to 2006, multivariable logistic regressions were used to estimate the effects of immigration status on mental health care utilization among patients with depression or anxiety disorders. Multivariate regressions showed that immigrants were significantly less likely to take any prescription drugs, but not significantly less likely to have any physician visits compared to US-born citizens. Results also showed that improving immigrants’ health care access and health insurance coverage could potentially reduce disparities between …

Risky Business Versus Overt Acts: What Relevance Do Actuarial, Probabilistic Risk Assessments Have For Judicial Decisions On Involuntary Psychiatric Hospitalization, Douglas Mossman Md Jan 2011

Risky Business Versus Overt Acts: What Relevance Do Actuarial, Probabilistic Risk Assessments Have For Judicial Decisions On Involuntary Psychiatric Hospitalization, Douglas Mossman Md

Faculty Lectures and Presentations

Recently, several authors have suggested that only by incorporating findings from actuarial risk assessment instruments (ARAIs) can mental health experts provide evidence-based testimony in mental health commitment hearings. Determining eligibility for involuntary hospitalization seems like an appropriate, natural, obvious application of ARAIs. Similar instruments are used frequently in decision-making about sex offender commitments, where (as with mental health commitment) social policy ostensibly aims to protect the public from harmful acts by persons with mental abnormalities. Also, all evidence suggests that actuarial techniques for judging dangerousness are superior to other methods of assessing the risk of future violence.

Yet in many …

Trauma Focused Treatment In Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities: A Group Treatment Approach, Kolina J. Delgado Jan 2011

Trauma Focused Treatment In Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities: A Group Treatment Approach, Kolina J. Delgado

Psychology Student Publications

Intellectual Disability is a condition that affects one's ability to learn and function independently. The condition is characterized by subaverage intellectual functioning and significant impairments in adaptive functioning, with onset occurring prior to age 18. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IVTR) uses the term Mental Retardations to describe these individual differences in cognitive and adaptive abilities. However, the term Mental Retardation has received significant criticism in recent years, and the term Intellectual Disability (ID) is being used with greater acceptance. In keeping with this trend, the term Intellectual Disability will be used throughout …

Attitudes Toward Psychological Tele-Health: Current And Future Psychologists' Opinions Of Internet-Based Interventions, Jonathan Perle Jan 2011

Attitudes Toward Psychological Tele-Health: Current And Future Psychologists' Opinions Of Internet-Based Interventions, Jonathan Perle

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past 20 years, with the development and expansion of computer- and internet-based services (e.g., psychoeducational, intervention, and testing programs), the integration of technology with the treatment of mental health disorders has sparked one of the most debated topics in the mental health profession. With no clear end for this debate in sight, many believe that clinicians wish to reach a consensus and adopt a universal stance on computer-based psychological services so that discussion and research can be shifted to make meaningful contributions for the future. Although paramount, many licensed psychologists have yet to state their stance of whether …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Worry Content In Sexual Minorities, Brandon J. Weiss, Debra A. Hope Jan 2011

A Preliminary Investigation Of Worry Content In Sexual Minorities, Brandon J. Weiss, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This preliminary study examined the nature of worry content of lesbians, gay men, and bisexual individuals and the relationship between worry related to sexual orientation and mental health. A community sample of 54 individuals identifying as sexual minorities was recruited from two cities in the Great Plains to complete a packet of questionaires, including a modified Worry Domains Questionnaire (WDQ; Tallis, Eysenck, & Mathews, 1992) with additional items constructed to assess worry over discrimination related to sexual orientation, and participate in a worry induction and verbalization task. The content of self-reported worries was consistent with those reported in prior investigations …

Sleep Problems, Tiredness, And Psychological Symptoms Among Healthy Adolescents, J. Aimée Coulombe, Graham J. Reid, Michael H. Boyle, Yvonne Racine Jan 2011

Sleep Problems, Tiredness, And Psychological Symptoms Among Healthy Adolescents, J. Aimée Coulombe, Graham J. Reid, Michael H. Boyle, Yvonne Racine

Paediatrics Publications

Objective To examine the contribution of adolescents' sleep problems and tiredness to psychological symptoms after accounting for shared risk and psychological co-morbidity. Methods Secondary analyses of cross-sectional data on 12-16-year-old (N = 980) adolescents without chronic illness, functional limitation, or developmental delay. Adolescents rated sleep problems, tiredness, and psychological symptoms. Parents provided information about risk factors, adolescent tiredness, and psychological symptoms. Results Prior to accounting for psychological co-morbidity, most sleep variables were significant correlates of adolescent-, but not parent-rated, psychological symptoms. After accounting for psychological co-morbidity: nightmares were associated with adolescent-rated anxiety/depression; sleeping more than others was associated with adolescent-rated …

The Influence Of Empowerment And Incivility On The Mental Health Of New Graduate Nurses, Travis Wing Jan 2011

The Influence Of Empowerment And Incivility On The Mental Health Of New Graduate Nurses, Travis Wing

Digitized Theses

In this secondary analysis, Kanter’s (1977) theory of structural empowerment was tested using a predictive, non-experimental design in a sample of new graduate nurses working in hospital settings in Ontario (n=394). The two hypothesized models predicted that high levels of structural empowerment would be associated with lower mental health symptoms, which would be mediated by high levels of coworker and supervisor incivility, respectively. TheConditionsforWorkEffectivenessQuestionnaire-II (Laschinger, Finegan, Shamian, & Wilk, 2001), the Workplace Incivility Scale (Cortina,

Magley, Williams, & Langhout, 2001), and the State of Mind subscale of the Pressure Management Indicator (Williams & Cooper, 2001) were used to measure study variables. …

The Role Of Resilience In Accounting For Residential Treatment Outcomes With Seriously Emotionally And Behaviourally Disordered Children And Youth, Wendy Den Dunnen Jan 2011

The Role Of Resilience In Accounting For Residential Treatment Outcomes With Seriously Emotionally And Behaviourally Disordered Children And Youth, Wendy Den Dunnen

Digitized Theses

Residential treatment is among the most costly forms of intervention for children with

serious emotional and behavioural disorders. While some children and youth report significant improvement from residential care, a significant subgroup does not. One explanation for treatment responsiveness may be related to resilience. This study examined factors predictive of resilience in 170 children and youth who were admitted to residential treatment with complex mental health problems. Results indicated that lower internalizing and externalizing behaviour predicted behavioural resilience. Higher school participation/achievement and an absence o f witnessing abuse predicted educational resilience. Family resilience was predicted by higher family functioning, younger …

Youth Homelessness, Mental Health, And Social Determinants Of Health, Melody Chow Jan 2011

Youth Homelessness, Mental Health, And Social Determinants Of Health, Melody Chow

Digitized Theses

Youth homelessness is becoming an increasingly prevalent concern. Homeless youth

commonly leave home due to a dysfunctional, often abusive, family life. While homeless, these youth are increasingly vulnerable to a higher level of severity of mental health issues. Homeless youth generally lack a support network. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of social determinants of health, specifically history of violence, quality of social relationships and quality of family relationships, on the mental health of homeless youth. The relationship between these variables and the overall mental illness severity of a homeless younger (16 to 30 years) group …

Academic Predictors Of Mental Health Outcomes For Children And Youth With Emotional Disturbance, John J. Callahan Jan 2011

Academic Predictors Of Mental Health Outcomes For Children And Youth With Emotional Disturbance, John J. Callahan

ETD Archive

Research suggests a strong correlation linking academic achievement and mental health outcomes in children with emotional disturbance (ED) (Kauffman, 2005 U.S. Department of Education, 2006). However, the exact nature of this critical relationship remains unclear. This study used a series if regression analyses and Z-Tests to investigate the predictive relationship of measures of academic achievement in determining social-emotional function over time. Examined was a sample of 261 students receiving special education and mental health services at a treatment center. Academic, mental health and demographic information was gathered from a preexisting archive. Students were assessed annually using the KTEA-II in the …

Co-Creating Collaborative Health Care In A Federally Qualified Health Center: Exploring Clients' Experiences Of Behavioral Health Services, Ginny-Lea Tonore Jan 2011

Co-Creating Collaborative Health Care In A Federally Qualified Health Center: Exploring Clients' Experiences Of Behavioral Health Services, Ginny-Lea Tonore

Marriage and Family Therapy - Dissertations

Research indicates that living in poverty exacerbates the risk for poor mental health, yet low-income people are less likely to seek mental health treatment than are people in higher income brackets. The research literature reports that this reluctance to seek behavioral health care is often due to a variety of barriers, such as stigma, costs, victimization, discrimination, and labeling. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are collaborative healthcare clinics that are uniquely positioned to eliminate many recognized barriers to care that hinder access to mental health services for some vulnerable and underserved populations. Most of the collaborative health care literature is …

Affective Labor And Governmental Policy: George W. Bush's New Freedom Commission On Mental Health, Kristin A. Swenson Jan 2011

Affective Labor And Governmental Policy: George W. Bush's New Freedom Commission On Mental Health, Kristin A. Swenson

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

As affective labor is becoming more dominant in contemporary capitalism, the affect of the body politic is increasingly important. This article argues for a theory of the affective state apparatus to account for the state‟s role in governing the affect of the population. An analysis of George W. Bush‟s Achieving the Promise: Transforming Mental Health Care in America reveals that an affective state apparatus functions to capture, constitute, and circulate the affects of the population. This article contends that an affective state apparatus operates through the very intimacies of our bodies in order to produce ever more efficient and productive …

Social Support And Health Outcomes In Adolescents Experiencing Homelessness And Poverty: A Test Of The Main Effect And Stress-Buffering Hypotheses, Danijela Zlatevski Jan 2011

Social Support And Health Outcomes In Adolescents Experiencing Homelessness And Poverty: A Test Of The Main Effect And Stress-Buffering Hypotheses, Danijela Zlatevski

Wayne State University Dissertations

The health benefit and stress-buffering effects of social support were examined. Homeless (N=250) and housed (N=148) adolescents were assessed in adolescence and again in early adulthood, providing longitudinal data to help understand how these social constructs may change and influence health. The study was designed to test Cohen and Wills (1985) main effect and stress-buffering hypotheses. Current findings provide some support for the main effect hypothesis and some more limited support for the stress-buffering effect of perceived social support on mental health. Specifically, a main effect was found at baseline for network social support on number of substance abuse symptoms. …

Mental Health Service Access Among Children And Adolescents Involved With Child Welfare Services, Junqing Liu Jan 2011

Mental Health Service Access Among Children And Adolescents Involved With Child Welfare Services, Junqing Liu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Most research on children's access to mental health has focused on child and family factors (e.g. child's age and ethnicity), with little attention being paid to service system factors such as service referrals and insurance. Furthermore, most research conducted to date on mental health service access has been cross-sectional without considering how service access and needs change over time. This dissertation study aims to address these oversights by examining over time service system change and the impact of service system factors on the relationship between service needs and access. The study employs multilevel and longitudinal regression analyses (STATA) using five …

The Dirty Work Of Law Enforcement: Emotion, Secondary Traumatic Stress, And Burnout In Federal Officers Exposed To Disturbing Media, Amanda Harms Jan 2011

The Dirty Work Of Law Enforcement: Emotion, Secondary Traumatic Stress, And Burnout In Federal Officers Exposed To Disturbing Media, Amanda Harms

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The present study adds to past research on exposure to disturbing media as a driver of burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Research has shown that exposure to this type of media can lead to secondary traumatic stress (STS), burnout, as well as other negative outcomes (Burns, Bradshaw, Morley, & Domene, 2008; Divine, 2010; Krause, 2009; Perez, Jones, Englert, & Sachau, 2010; Stevenson, 2007). In addition, I discuss this type of work as a form of "dirty work" (Ashforth & Kreiner, 1999). I examined the role of various emotional responses and stigma as mediators and moderators of the relationship between exposure …

Reducing Mass Incarceration: Lessons From The Deinstitutionalization Of Mental Hospitals In The 1960s, Bernard Harcourt Jan 2011

Reducing Mass Incarceration: Lessons From The Deinstitutionalization Of Mental Hospitals In The 1960s, Bernard Harcourt

Faculty Scholarship

In a message to Congress in 1963, President John F. Kennedy outlined a federal program designed to reduce by half the number of persons in custody. The institutions at issue were state hospitals and asylums for the mentally ill, and the number of such persons in custody was staggeringly large, in fact comparable to contemporary levels of mass incarceration in prisons and jails. President Kennedy's message to Congress – the first and perhaps only presidential message to Congress that dealt exclusively with the issue of institutionalization in this country – proposed replacing state mental hospitals with community mental health centers, …
