Co-Designing With Immigrant Women To Imagine An Equitable Mental Health Service Ecosystem, Luz Paczka Giorgi
Co-Designing With Immigrant Women To Imagine An Equitable Mental Health Service Ecosystem, Luz Paczka Giorgi
IASDR Conference Series
Immigrants currently represent a quarter of the Canadian population, and this continues to increase as more people move due to social, financial, political, and environmental causes. However, this population experiences a considerable decline in their health over time upon their arrival; thus, making immigrant health a crucial public health issue. Immigrant women in specific experience a variety of stressors including employment, family support, and cultural shock regarding gender roles, which put their mental health at high risk. Therefore, mental health inequities should be tackled by putting equity and intersectionality front and center. The wide amount of literature supporting the benefits …
Queering Futures With Data-Driven Speculation: The Design Of An Expanded Mixed Methods Research Framework Integrating Qualitative, Quantitative, And Practice-Based Modes., Jess Westbrook
IASDR Conference Series
Creative research, “tends to resist binary or categorical thinking,” and can gather both qualitative and quantitative data. Just both? Why stop there? The Queering Futures Framework (QFF) disregards traditional mixed methods research conventions. It Queers methodology. After intersecting concurrent qualitative and quantitative modes, it wanders and stretches into a practice-based mode. It is in the culminating creative practice-based mode that signals identified in the qualitative and the quantitative datasets are compared, scanned, probed, mined, and leveraged using a new futures method I call data-driven speculation. Data-driven speculation is a practice-based research method. Data-driven speculation uses signals as sparks in the …

IASDR Conference Series
This healthcare co-design project supported the spatial and service design of a new residential eating disorders (ED) facility at a major metropolitan hospital in Melbourne, Australia. We present two interrelated co-design engagements that brought together 35 people, including clinical leaders, frontline providers, lived experience advocates and peer mentors. Our findings are now being used to guide planning for the design and construction of the new facility as part of established architectural planning processes. We mobilised design methodologies to navigate the tensions between the clinical needs of the facility and its staff, along with the multifaceted needs of the future residents …

Efficacy Of Mental Health Interventions For Physicians: A Literature Review, Rebecca Rudolph
Efficacy Of Mental Health Interventions For Physicians: A Literature Review, Rebecca Rudolph
Counselor Education Capstones
Medical physicians at all points of their careers, including as medical students, interns, residents, and independent physicians, are more likely than their non-physician peers to experience depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, substance abuse, and other mental health issues. A variety of occupation-specific factors could contribute to these issues with no root cause known, and the efficacy of mental health care interventions for this group also remains ambiguous. There seem to be two approaches to the problem - implementing interventions at organizational levels and making individual interventions available. There is not one conclusive answer to systematically improve physician mental health, and different …

How To Punish Your Least Favorite Online Influencer: Wellness Checks As Swatting And Their Disproportionate Impact On Marginalized Creators, Tara Blackwell
Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice
Marginalized online creators are vulnerable to attacks using digital means of harassment including traditional swatting as well as the abuse of wellness checks that can act as swatting. Enabled by permissive Supreme Court 4th Amendment jurisprudence, malignant online actors have taken advantage of the ramshackle system of wellness checks that sends armed police officers with little training and even less compassion to the doors of individuals with reported mental health crises. This Note focuses on two polarizing influencers who have been subject to wellness check swatting after being very open about their mental health statuses online. This Note argues that …

The Role Of Organizational Messages About Mental Health In Disclosure And Support-Seeking Decisions Among First Responders: A Qualitative Investigation, Erin S. Craw, Michelle Miller-Day
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
First responders, especially those without adequate support, are at heightened risk for experiencing adverse mental health outcomes. Workplace mental health interventions for first responders are becoming more common. However, systematic research within the field of communication has not typically informed the development of these workplace interventions. The current study conducted interviews with 26 first responders to examine the messages they receive about mental health from their organizations and how those messages affect their support-seeking decisions. Analysis of the interviews revealed that first responders receive inconsistent messages from their departments about whether to seek support for mental health-related problems, creating confusion …

“100%, I’M Not Trained For This:” Understanding How Professors Navigate Higher Education As Student Mental Health Declines, Clio F. Chazan-Gabbard
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Generational and cultural changes have led mental health to become an increasingly common concern among the general population, especially Generation Z. As a result, professors have become very aware of declining college student mental health, and some have become advisors for struggling students; in the process, they are learning to navigate boundaries in and out of the classroom (Lipson, 2021; Price et al., 2020). Using six qualitative interviews, this study seeks to ask: how do professors understand, navigate teaching, and one-on-one interactions as student mental health issues increase? This paper argues that as student mental health suffers and campus counseling …

Pediatric Providers’ Experiences Assessing Young Children’S Emotions And Behaviors, Vaibhavi Venkataramanan, Akira Isaac B.S., Sara Bufferd Ph.D.
The Cardinal Edge
Introduction: Preschool-aged children experience anxiety and mood-related emotions (e.g., irritability, fears) and behaviors (e.g., tantrums) that are developmentally normative, but can overlap with psychopathology, making assessment challenging (Bufferd et al.,2016). Most children see pediatric medical providers annually, and providers can evaluate them. However, providers face challenges like limited training and time (Bean et al.,2000;Heneghan et al.,2008). Accurate and early identification of emotional and behavioral difficulties is critical to support young children’s mental health and prevent worsening problems.
Methods: Participants included N=22 pediatricians who see 3-5-year-old children in their practice. Pediatricians completed an online survey about their experiences assessing young …

Lack Of School Choice And The Mental Health Of Rural Parents: A Phenomenological Study, Lisa Deforest Holland
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of parents whose children have limited educational options in rural North Carolina. The theory chosen to guide this study was choice theory, founded by William Glasser, as it explains that all behavior including reactions to others’ choices, and the body’s reaction to stress are chosen by the individual (Glasser, 2001). Additionally, choice theory recognizes the basic needs of survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun, and their impact on behavior which Maslow identified in his hierarchy of needs model (Glasser Institute for Choice Theory, n.d.). Parents want to …

Pedophilia: Understanding The Origins And Problems Within The Criminal Justice System, James K. Mcelhaney
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Societal stigma, criminal sanctions, and the mental illness or disorder of pedophilia are explored in this paper because of the considerable research gaps that have accumulated over the past decade. Most of the data acquired regarding individuals with pedophilia have been predominantly from male offenders, with most of the information coming from reports to local law enforcement and the FBI. The outcome of multiple studies shows that neuroimaging, associated brainwaves, and related sexual attraction are significantly different for individuals with pedophiliac tendencies than for others. Studies also reveal that research has been limited to prevention techniques and therapy for nonoffenders …
