Parents As Reporters Of Middle School Students’ Subjective Well-Being, Daijah N. Hines
Parents As Reporters Of Middle School Students’ Subjective Well-Being, Daijah N. Hines
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Historically, self-report has been the predominant method for assessing the subjective well-being of adolescents (SWB). Regarding the use of secondary reporters, especially parental/caregiver reports, in assessing adolescent SWB, there is a gap in the literature. Gaining a better understanding of how to best evaluate adolescent SWB can assist in the identification of adolescents who may be at risk for mental health concerns or who could benefit from increased well-being. It may also assist in the development of future interventions in positive psychology for adolescents. This validity study explored (1) What is the reliability of a newly developed parent report measure …

The Phenomenon Of False Memory And Its Correlation To Mental Health, Kelsey Christianson
The Phenomenon Of False Memory And Its Correlation To Mental Health, Kelsey Christianson
D.U.Quark
Memory has always been important for humans. Whether it is remembering the location of one’s car in a crowded parking lot or giving an eye-witness testimony, memory is instrumental in every part of society. False memory is a situation where one incorrectly believes or recalls an event. This review is about false memory and how mental disorders may or may not increase the capacity for false memory. Previous studies have found correlations between false memory and specific mental health disorders. Additional research is needed in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, and schizophrenia. The benefits of future research …

2024-03: Addressing Mental Health Needs Of Mothers In Minnesota, Liz Fritz, Leah Nachreiner, Jaelynn Pinske, Mary Speer
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Maternal mental health refers to a range of conditions or illnesses that can occur anytime during pregnancy or the first year following pregnancy. When left untreated, maternal mental health conditions can have long-term negative impacts on the mother, baby, and family. Proper screenings for maternal mental health conditions are critical to ensuring that mental health concerns are detected and that new and expecting mothers receive the care they need. Requiring screening for maternal mental health conditions as part of prenatal and postpartum visits will lead to the care that new mothers deserve.

2024-04: Pathways To Stability And Hope: A Holistic Approach To Permanent Supportive Housing For Individuals With Serious Mental Illness (Smi), Dayna Gums, Ericka Wood, Haddy Jagne, Haley Pollard
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
The absence of accessible permanent supported housing options for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) poses a critical challenge, contributing to heightened vulnerability, increased homelessness rates, and inadequate support systems. Addressing this disparity demands a comprehensive and nuanced response that prioritizes the development and implementation of sustainable housing solutions tailored to the unique needs and experiences of individuals living with SMI. Effective interventions must embrace a holistic approach that integrates housing stability with wraparound support services, including mental health treatment, vocational training, and social inclusion initiatives.

Youth Mental Health And Help-Seeking Behaviors, Azya Ripley
Youth Mental Health And Help-Seeking Behaviors, Azya Ripley
University Honors Theses
We know that there is a mental health crisis but that many youth will hesitate to seek out help or will not know how to seek out help. This thesis investigates some factors that represent barriers to youth in asking and getting help from adults for mental health, and how adults can intervene to increase youth's likelihood to be vulnerable and honest in their struggles. Moving forward, I outline some concrete ways to normalize asking for help and to make it easier for youth to access counselors and therapists.

Managing the COVID-19 pandemic involved implementing public health policies that disrupted students' lives, creating conditions that substantially influenced their mental health and well-being. Subsequently, research focused don the mental health sequelae of increased depression and anxiety, but the possible impacts on adolescents' social well-being have been largely unexamined. Social well-being is essential to youth's overall mental health and can be diminished even without symptoms of depression and anxiety. This report explored heterogeneities in changes in adolescents' social well-being from pre-COVID-19 to post-restrictions using longitudinal data from adolescents attending middle and high schools in California (N = 1,299; 49.9% female). …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Machine learning is increasingly and ubiquitously being used in the medical domain. Evaluation metrics like accuracy, precision, and recall may indicate the performance of the models but not necessarily the reliability of their outcomes. This paper assesses the effectiveness of a number of machine learning algorithms applied to an important dataset in the medical domain, specifically, mental health, by employing explainability methodologies. Using multiple machine learning algorithms and model explainability techniques, this work provides insights into the models’ workings to help determine the reliability of the machine learning algorithm predictions. The results are not intuitive. It was found that the …

Clear Skies, Clear Minds: Navigating Mental Health Attitudes In Collegiate Aviation Education, Austin T. Walden
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
This study explores the attitudes towards mental health within the aviation community, focusing on the perspectives of flight instructors and flight students within a university based part 141 program. Mental health is a critical aspect of aviation safety, yet recent airline incidents have brought the public’s focus on how the FAA deals, or doesn’t deal with mental health. Younger generations of pilots have been brought up with the idea that mental health is something to openly talk about. This comes at a stark contrast to how the FAA works.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining surveys and interviews to …

A Structured Program for Pilots and Traffic Controllers with Mental Issues.
by Ian Blair Fries, M.D. Senior HIMS AME, MRO, SAP.
Many pilots and controllers are avoiding appropriate mental care that would have to be reported to the FAA, or omitting required notification of mental care they have received. Either option is detrimental to air safety and personal health.
I propose a structured aviation program to handle mental issues similar to the HIMS Program for pilots with alcohol and/or drug abuse and dependence. The HIMS Program is extremely successful with about 85 percent of pilots who participate recovering and returning …
