South Park And Absurd Culture War Ideologies, The Art Of Stealthy Conservatism, Drew W. Dungan
South Park And Absurd Culture War Ideologies, The Art Of Stealthy Conservatism, Drew W. Dungan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
South Park serves as an example of satire and parody lampooning culture war issues in the popular media. Since it targets culture war issues, it is relevant to analyze its political and social stance on the issues as presented within. Both extremes in political and social ideology are targeted. Although the program notes an ideological absurdity in extremist points-of-view, the presentation of the issues attempts to create a sense of moderate ideology criticizing both the far left and far right, when in fact, closer analysis provides evidence that South Park serves a stealthy conservative perspective. Stealthy conservatism presents itself as …

Media To Medium: Representations Of Violence, War & Women In Pop Culture, Althea Georgelas
Theses and Dissertations
My work is inspired by the mass Media and how it affects the world around me. I am interested in how violence, war and women are represented in popular culture and how this has trickled down into social behavior. I also wonder how much entertainment media reflects deep social ideals. I define mass media as the viral proliferation of ideas using television, cinema, video gaming and the Internet. I am concerned about the social and psychological affects of violent media and how it impacts the lives of women and girls. This is of particular interest to me because I am …

A Requiem For My New York Times Home Subscription, Kenneth Anderson
A Requiem For My New York Times Home Subscription, Kenneth Anderson
Popular Media
This very short (2000 words) online opinion piece addresses the question of why the author gave up home delivery of the New York Times. It argues that, quite apart from issues of political bias, the New York Times has successively moved to turn itself from a newspaper into a magazine, and, in facing the pressures of the Internet economic model, into a device for creating, caring for, and feeding the newspaper's "online communities" - a business model increasingly based on selling cultural participation in shared-bias-communities. The Times is moving toward a content model that presumes that its readers read it …

Gender, Sport & Nationalism: The Cases Of Canada And India, Courtney Glass
Gender, Sport & Nationalism: The Cases Of Canada And India, Courtney Glass
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research seeks to explore the gendered nature of nationalisms and the ways that they can be challenged and perhaps transformed through the participation of women in sport at the national level. Nationalism is part of the public sphere, while women have historically been relegated to the private sphere. However, many scholars argue that women do in fact taken part in nation building primarily as biological reproducers of the nation. This has led scholars to conclude that nationalism is indeed gendered. Sport has traditionally been a masculine domain where conceptions of hegemonic masculinity as well as the nation are developed …

Research has shown that viewing violence in the media can have a profound impact on aggressive thoughts and behaviors. However, the impact of viewing relational aggression in the media has rarely been examined. This paper presents the results of an experimental study that examines the impact of viewing relational and physical aggression in the media on subsequent aggression. In this study, adult females were shown video clips containing no-aggression, relational aggression, or physical aggression. Their aggressive behavior was measured through the use of a competitive reaction time task (physical aggression) and evaluations of a confederate of the experiment (relational aggression). …

Communication Systems And Hiv/Aids Sexual Decision Making In Older Adolescent And Young Adult Females, Rasheeta D. Chandler Ms, Arnp, Fnp-Bc
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a national priority for several reasons including its endemic/pandemic status and economic demand. Adolescents 15 to 24 years old who are sexually active acquire nearly half of all new Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Recent findings from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) have documented increased teen birth rates, escalating births to unwed mothers, and STIs ascribed to one in four adolescent females, are reasons to enhance effective prevention efforts.
The specific aim of the study, based on Bandura's social cognitive theory, was to test associations among communication system methods and …

Wholetree Substrate And Fertilizer Rate In Production Of Greenhouse-Grown Petunia (Petunia ×Hybrida Vilm.) And Marigold (Tagetes Patula L.), Glenn B. Fain, Charles H. Gilliam, Jeff L. Sibley, Cheryl R. Boyer, Anthony L. Witcher
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
A substrate component (WholeTree) made from loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) was evaluated along with starter fertilizer rate in the production of greenhouse-grown petunia (Petunia ×hybrida Vilm. ‘Dreams Purple’) and marigold (Tagetes patula L. ‘Hero Spry’). Loblolly pine from a 12-year-old plantation were harvested at ground level, chipped, and further processed through a hammer mill to pass a 0.64-cm screen. The resulting WholeTree (WT) substrate was used alone or combined with 20% (WTP2) or 50% (WTP5) (by volume) Canadian sphagnum peatmoss and compared with an industry standard peat-lite (PL) mix of 8 peatmoss : 1 vermiculite : 1 perlite (by …
The Legitimacy And Moral Authority Of The National News Council (Usa), Erik Ugland
The Legitimacy And Moral Authority Of The National News Council (Usa), Erik Ugland
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
As an institution designed to resolve disputes between the public and the American news media and to assess the ethical standards of the mainstream media, the National News Council (1973-84) was, at least in the USA, a ground-breaking institution. This study suggests, however, that the Council's work was anything but revolutionary, and that it probably did more to entrench the received tenets of American journalism than to either validate or refashion them. By applying a conventional set of ethical standards in its resolution of disputes, by repeatedly emphasizing the First Amendment rights of the media respondents, by violating its by-laws …
The"War On Poverty" And "Welfare Reform": A Comparative Discourse Analysis Of Elite Newspaper Editorial Coverage In 1964 And 1996, Laura Mogg
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
From the time of the "war on poverty" of 1964, to the era of "welfare reform" in 1990s, the federal welfare system underwent a change from a model that acted to protect citizens from the vagaries of the market economy to one that mandated their participation in the paid labor force. For a shift in policy of this magnitude to occur and be unquestioningly accepted by the public, a significant change also had to occur in how poverty and welfare issues were discussed and perceived over the intervening years. Using discourse analysis, this study examines how editorials in elite newspapers …

Experience Of Media And Race In The National Football League: An Existential Phenomological Study, Jocelyn Alexis Fisher
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Over 70% percent of the current National Football League (NFL) population is of African-American descent (Lapchick, 2007). Moreover, there is a disparity between sport analyst with 74% of the radio and television announcers being White, and 12% being Black (Lapchick 2006). Thus, the purpose was to examine African-American NFL players on their experiences of media interaction from a phenomenological perspective and veteran NFL reporters experiences of interacting with African-American NFL players. This study consisted of one open-ended question for each population. Data was transcribed and analyzed, and themes were identified. Themes for the NFL players consisted of a) how media …

The Olympic Spotlight: The Beijing Games And China As A Future World Leader, Eric A. Heinze
Human Rights & Human Welfare
According to Jeffrey Wasserstrom’s article, if the Chinese think they can censor the Olympics, and the political showcasing that will almost certainly accompany them, they are sorely mistaken. I am persuaded by the thrust of this argument. I just hope that as China vies for global leadership and influence, whatever truths the Olympic spotlight reveals about its potential in this regard are more farcical than tragic.

Women Making News: Gender And Media In South Africa, Margaretha Geertsema
Women Making News: Gender And Media In South Africa, Margaretha Geertsema
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
South Africa’s news media are still in a process of transformation after the transition to democracy in 1994. The media continue to face the challenge of ensuring equal and fair representation to the entire population, and gender and media activists in particular have taken up the challenge of bringing about change. Research shows that women have not yet achieved equal access and representation compared to men: they are under-represented as reporters, news sources, and audience members. Yet, in comparison with other countries, South Africa has about as many female reporters as the average reported in the Global Media Monitoring Project …

Today, media corporations and their professional and trade associations, along with organizations like Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and the American Civil Liberties Union, carefully monitor litigation that implicates First Amendment values and decide whether, when, and how to intervene. It was not always so. Litigation by an institutional press to avoid or create doctrinal precedent under the First Amendment really began with the appointment of Col. Robert R. McCormick to head the ANPA's Committee on Freedom of the Press in the spring of 1928 and his involvement in Near v. Minnesota beginning that fall. Because of McCormick's …

Reporting On Palin: Negotiations In Political Theater, Erin Ryan

This short essay uses negotiation theory as a lens to analyze the McCain campaign's efforts to manipulate its media coverage during the 2008 presidential election. It offers a timely consideration of the troubling dynamic that can arise between the media and the campaigns that they cover, which often approximates a formal negotiation. The essay compares the campaign's strategies for managing press coverage of its candidates to the well-researched techniques of competitive bargainers, including anchoring tactics, the scarcity effect, and psychological warfare. It reviews how reporters are uniquely hamstrung in coping with competitive bargaining tactics compared to ordinary negotiators, and tailors …

Betwixt And Between: Virtuality, Liminality, Media And Memory, Slavica Panic
Digitized Theses
Using the concept of liminality found in the work of anthropologist Victor Turner, this thesis explores connections among experiences of media, memory, and the virtual. I examine how these phenomena influence and inform everyday life, and especially how they play out in experiences of displacement, exile and migration. I analyze them as forms of contemporary ritual which play a key role in the construction of our identities in a globalized world. The thesis discusses displacement and its relationship to the concept of “home”, paying particular attention to media representations of home and mediated experiences of home. I look to the …

Global Media, Communication Technology, And The War On Terror, James Castonguay
Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications
From the telegraph, radio, film, and television to the Internet and mobile satellite networks, media and communication technologies have been integral to the waging and representation of war. Always eager to improve communications, surveillance, and weapons systems, military institutions have funded and developed new communication technologies and media since at least the 19th century, and journalism and entertainment have long been central to governments’ propaganda efforts. In the current context of the Iraq War and the “war on terror,” most accounts of international communication equate media with news (ignoring other genres) and often neglect the crucial role that audiences and …

(In) Visible Fissures And The "Multicultural American: Interrupting Race, Ethnicity, And Imperialism Through Tv's Survivor, Sarah Hentges
Ethnic Studies Review
One of the longest running reality TV shows, with 15 seasons as of 2007, Survivor is an important text for considerations of race and ethnicity, legacies of imperialism, and the idea of the "multicultural" America. Survivor provides an evolving adventure narrative -one that relies upon the legacies of the past, like colonialism and imperialism, as well as the myths of the present and future, like tourism as a means of survival in a globalized economy. As these imperial contexts are adapted Survivor provides moments for (mostly white or white-identified) privileged, "multicultural" first-world Americans to participate in neo-colonial cultural and economic …
