Symposium: Cyberbullying: Emerging Realities And Legal Challenges: Foreword , Christina E. Wells
Symposium: Cyberbullying: Emerging Realities And Legal Challenges: Foreword , Christina E. Wells
Missouri Law Review
Bullying and its effects concern many of us in the United States. As many as thirty percent of students in grades five through ten have experienced at least one bullying incident in a given year.] Studies further show that up to thirty-five percent of students have been the victims of cyberbullying - i.e., the use of online mediums to bully others. Most observers agree that this number is likely to rise. Such bullying physically and psychologically affects students. It can disrupt their education and cause depression, anxiety, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempts. After several highly publicized suicides, there appears …
Cyberbullying From Psychological And Legal Perspectives, Philip C. Rodkin, Karla Fischer
Cyberbullying From Psychological And Legal Perspectives, Philip C. Rodkin, Karla Fischer
Missouri Law Review
In this Article, we begin Part II by a brief exploration of the history of bullying in social science research. Part III is a description of the ways that social scientists have attempted to define bullying, and by extension, cyberbullying. We pay particular attention to understanding the roles that the intentionality of the bully, the repetition of the problematic behavior, and the power asymmetry of the bully-victim dyad play in distinguishing bullying from other negative behavior. In Part IV, we track the relationship between bullies and their social worlds, noting that some bullies are marginalized within a broader peer culture …

Regulating Student Cyberspeech, Barry P. Mcdonald
Missouri Law Review
Part I of this Article will provide the First Amendment background for thinking about these disputes. It will explain how the Court has interpreted that amendment to provide primary and secondary students in American public schools with free speech rights, albeit not as broad as they enjoy in their capacities as ordinary citizens of our country. It has given public school administrators special power to regulate student speech as necessary to achieve the task the people have assigned them - the effective education of their children. When cyberbullying occurs then, as it often does, completely or partially off of school …
Cyberbullying Victimization: Associations With Other Victimization Forms And Psychological Distress, Melissa K. Holt, Dorothy L. Espelage
Cyberbullying Victimization: Associations With Other Victimization Forms And Psychological Distress, Melissa K. Holt, Dorothy L. Espelage
Missouri Law Review
Cyberbullying has gained increasing attention over the past decade, in part driven by significant media coverage on this topic.' While media attention has increased, prevalence rates derived from national and local surveys indicate that cyberbullying is a less common experience among youth than traditional bullying. Nonetheless, a significant number of youth experience both cyberbullying and its deleterious effects, and additional research is needed to guide nascent prevention and intervention efforts. In particular, existing research does not clarify the extent to which cyberbullying overlaps with traditional bullying or other forms of victimization that children might encounter in their schools, homes, and …

News Media And Environmental Policy: The Case Of The Niger Delta Crises, Onimi Wilcox, Andrew I.E. Ewoh, Felicia Okoli
African Social Science Review
The article examines the Nigerian media coverage of the devastation and environmental impact of decades of oil spills in the Niger Delta. Using the agenda setting approach as a conceptual framework, the analysis aims to uncover the role played by the media in the environmental policy process. The article begins with a discussion of the modus operandi of various media outlets in reporting the nature and scope of oil spill. This is followed by a review of the national government’s effort in managing and reducing the incidents of oil spill on the environment and the affected communities. On the basis …

Freedom Of Expression And The First Amendment, Lois G. Forer
Sacred Heart University Review
Judge Lois G. Forer delivered this paper at the formal opening of the Freedom Institute at Sacred Heart University on April 24, 1989. She argues that there is a need for federal legislation to define and standardize libel law in the United States. Judge Forer, who sat on the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia from 1971 until retirement as a senior judge in 1987, is the author of A Chilling Effect: the mounting threat of libel and invasion of privacy actions to the First Amendment.

Roundtable Discussion Examining Ritual, Technology, And Community In Urban Communication, Victoria Geyer, Mary Ann Allison Phd, Suzanne N. Berman, Gary Gumpert
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Pervasive technologies that now exist in the urban setting have greatly improved the ability to connect on a macro-level, but have minimized the intimate shared experience of community on a micro level. This paper explores how technology has changed rituals within the global community and has contributed new methods to the process of human interaction. Technology’s influence on civic engagement, business meetings, shopping and socializing are examined to assess the impact technology has on human connections.
Alternative Vs. Traditional News: A Content Analysis Of News Coverage Of The 10th Anniversary Of Sept. 11, Rex Edward Barber Jr.
Alternative Vs. Traditional News: A Content Analysis Of News Coverage Of The 10th Anniversary Of Sept. 11, Rex Edward Barber Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The researcher sought to understand the differences in framing used by alternative media outlets and traditional or mainstream media outlets. A sampling of articles about the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was used from alternative and traditional media publications to conduct this study. These articles were analyzed by a software program to determine themes and concepts within both data sets. The analysis revealed traditional media was less varied in themes than was alternative media, with the latter clearly showing an effort to be. Traditional media was found to provide routine coverage of commemorative services and very …

Book Review: Public Journalism 2.0: The Promise And Reality Of A Citizen-Engaged Press, Sue Burzynski Bullard
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications
Digital technology has changed journalism dramatically. Through a collection of research studies, essays, case studies, and interviews, Public Journalism 2.0 takes a detailed look at evolving public journalism and where audience-generated stories fit into that evolution. The editors divide the book into three sections: the history of civic and citizen journalism, current practices, and future possibilities. They conclude with their views of where professionals fit in to a citizen-engaged press.
Creating Change Through Documentary Film: An Examination Of Select Films, Elizabeth C. Faulcon
Creating Change Through Documentary Film: An Examination Of Select Films, Elizabeth C. Faulcon
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
Radically altering or expanding the worldview of an individual or the collective of society requires the interacting media to engage and invoke an emotional response. In many instances, film, educates and elucidates—thus facilitating a shift of perspective. By challenging the status quo and creating a definitive alteration in perception when circumstances and information prove the former viewpoint or worldview is no longer valid. Documentaries that are related to causes can be part of this process is that it holds the potential to provoke action and evoke an emotional response. The foundation for building a new framework through an application of …
New Media, New Politics: The Emergence Of The Internet In American Politics, Michael Robert Artime
New Media, New Politics: The Emergence Of The Internet In American Politics, Michael Robert Artime
Dissertations
The Internet is viewed by some as a great tool for democracy. Indeed, if we believe in the value of a marketplace of ideas, there is no greater forum through which individuals can express any and every opinion on a variety of issues than the Internet. However, it is unclear whether this free and unfettered expression of ideas has been helpful or harmful to American democracy. This dissertation demonstrates, through the use of National Election Studies (NES) data that those using the Internet tend to have more negative attitudes toward political leaders and institutions than their counterparts who either do …
The Mediation Of Personal Distress On Negative Television News And Donations, Walt Beddingfield Collins
The Mediation Of Personal Distress On Negative Television News And Donations, Walt Beddingfield Collins
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Previous research has shown that negative television news can lead to a reduction in positive affect (Harrell, 2000; Szabo & Hopkinson, 2007). What has yet to be investigated though is how negative television news influences an individual's interactions with others; precisely, how negative television news affects a person's empathy for persons in need and donation behaviors to help others. Participants were randomly assigned to four different conditions: local victim news condition, nonlocal victim news condition, far victim news condition, and a neutral media condition. Participants viewed media clips that corresponded with their condition and then filled out a questionnaire that …
Isolated Capital Cities, Accountability And Corruption: Evidence From Us States, Filipe R. Campante, Quoc-Anh Do
Isolated Capital Cities, Accountability And Corruption: Evidence From Us States, Filipe R. Campante, Quoc-Anh Do
Research Collection School Of Economics
We show that isolated capital cities are robustly associated with greater levels of corruption across US states. In particular, this is the case when we use the variation induced by the exogenous location of a state’s centroid to instrument for the concentration of population around the capital city. We then show that different mechanisms for holding state politicians accountable are also affected by the spatial distribution of population: newspapers provide greater coverage of state politics when their audiences are more concentrated around the capital, and voter turnout in state elections is greater in places that are closer to the capital. …

The Urban-Rural Dichotomy In The Indonesian Documentaries; "Nona Nyonya?" And "Untuk Apa?", Asri Saraswati
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The media play a pivotal role in the democratization process in Indonesia and this is among others apparent in the surge of films, both fiction and documentaries that have been produced after the end Suharto's decades of control over the media. It is important to note, however, that compared with fiction films, the documentary genre remains rather unpopular in Indonesia. Indonesian documentary films struggle to depict stories of the subaltern and those living in the "periphery" in order for them to be seen and heard by the greater masses and by those in power - the ones in the "centre" …
Gender Bias In A Patriarchal Society; A Media Analysis On Virginity And Reproductive Health, Billy K. Sarwono
Gender Bias In A Patriarchal Society; A Media Analysis On Virginity And Reproductive Health, Billy K. Sarwono
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Women and health are two very close issues as family health lies most often in the hands of women. Ironically, their awareness toward their own health is still low. Cultural constraints have made single, unmarried women or virgins feel reluctant to go to obgyn clinics, though there is an increasing prevalence of cervical cancer in Indonesia. Related to the role of the media to reduce the number of women with cervical cancer, a question rises. How do the media represent this conflict? The object of the study is a documentary film about several problems faced by women. The unit of …
Whose Line Is It Anyway? Examining The Media's Coverage Of Cabinet Secretaries' Speeches, Matthew G. Mullarky
Whose Line Is It Anyway? Examining The Media's Coverage Of Cabinet Secretaries' Speeches, Matthew G. Mullarky
Political Science Honors Projects
Previous research suggests that politicians and the press spin news stories through their remarks and coverage of remarks to their own benefit — but is this also true for remarks made by Cabinet Secretaries? For this project, I compared remarks given by DHS Secretaries with newspaper articles about those remarks. I find that Secretaries’ ability to shape issues is initially limited by the press; however, Secretaries succeed in conveying their message eventually. This is important because citizens should know what government officials are saying and what those statements mean; therefore, media coverage of those statements should be critical and accurate.
Global Impacts Of Media On Tobacco Use Among Adolescents: A Comparative Analysis Of The United States And China, Katherine Theresa Lesyna
Global Impacts Of Media On Tobacco Use Among Adolescents: A Comparative Analysis Of The United States And China, Katherine Theresa Lesyna
Scripps Senior Theses
Tobacco use is responsible for five million deaths annually and is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide. Many smokers initiate smoking behavior during adolescence. Adolescent smoking rates have been on the rise and there are a variety of different factors that contribute to the initiation of smoking behavior. While the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have endorsed the claim that smoking in movies increases adolescents’ risk of initiating smoking, few studies have examined the impact of media on adolescent smoking in China following the expansion of transnational tobacco companies. The aim of …

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion
This project was originally created for a class called "Multimedia Authoring," which is sort of a whirlwind tour through graphic design, web design, and digital filmmaking from both a practical and theoretical perspective. Although the class as a whole is inherently very optimistic about new technologies, because it teaches students how to understand the exciting rhetorical possibilities afforded by them, I wanted to examine a specific case where I had found technological progress to be problematic. This piece explores my personal history with technologies that enable writing.
The Impact Of Media On Body Images Of Young Women, Brittani D. Wynn
The Impact Of Media On Body Images Of Young Women, Brittani D. Wynn
Research Papers
Extensive literature has focused on the media influences on the body images of women. This is a quantitative study that examines the relationship between the impact that media has had on women and their body image as adolescents, as well as their current relationship with the media and their body image. It also examines if women feel that the media accurately portrays women in magazines and TV shows, and if they are influenced by the images in following them and changing their lifestyles to look like them. One hundred and fifty-one women studying at a university were surveyed over the …
Implications Of Designing Instructional Video Using Cognitive Theory Of Multimedia Learning, Mohamed Ibrahim
Implications Of Designing Instructional Video Using Cognitive Theory Of Multimedia Learning, Mohamed Ibrahim
Faculty Publications - Teaching and Educational Leadership
This study explored the implications of designing instructional video using an integrated model includes segmenting, signaling, and weeding. Two intact sections (n=226) participated in the study, treatment group learned from a video designed with SSW model and the control group learned from the original video. The SSW design has several implications: the SSW model is an effective way to design instructional video, improves students’ learning outcomes, reduces their perceived learning difficulty, assists and promotes their higher-level learning. Each design principle has its unique effect on the leaning goals and facilitates certain learning outcomes and loses its potency for others. Finally, …

Occupying Spatial Dimensions In Media, Lina Bondarenko
Architecture Senior Theses
"I contend that in a context in which the protester is warded the minor title of Time Magazine's Person of the Year, multi-agent production of news media outnumbers the institutionalized, and unemployment among educated youth soars, architecture must be capable of fusing the shared appetites between a freshly ambitious urban demographic."

Big Censorship In The Big House—A Quarter-Century After Turner V. Safley: Muting Movies, Music & Books Behind Bars, Clay Calvert, Kara Carnley Murrhee
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Turner v. Safley, this Article examines how federal courts across the country are applying the Turner standard today in cases involving the First Amendment free speech rights of inmates. Are courts too quick today to support the censorial proclivities of prison officials? Do judges too readily capitulate in deference to the concerns of those tasked with overseeing the incarcerated? Those are the key questions this Article addresses by analyzing inmate access to magazines, movies, books, and other common forms of media artifacts. This Article’s determinations stem from …

Television Media Consumption: Measuring Attitudinal Levels Towards Capital Punishment, Bryson D. Jones, Stephen J. Bahr
Television Media Consumption: Measuring Attitudinal Levels Towards Capital Punishment, Bryson D. Jones, Stephen J. Bahr
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
This study argues that the frequency of consumption and type of television media that one views is indicative of attitudinal formation on sensitive Political Science issues such as executing convicted murderers. In this setting, I investigate whether Americans who watch more television, and those who watch prime-time dramas or comedies or national or world news programs are more likely to support the death penalty. I hypothesize that such viewing habits increases ones likelihood for supporting punitive punishment like the death penalty because of the type of media messages they are exposed to such as violence, criminal dramas, law enforcement, and …
Argentina's Mining Sector Hit By Protests, Andrés Gaudín
Argentina's Mining Sector Hit By Protests, Andrés Gaudín
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
Amid a mining boom throughout Latin America, from Central America to the southern Patagonia, with at least 120 environmental conflicts related to extractive activities, Argentina is also witnessing confrontation between social sectors and the national and provincial governments, pro-mining groups, and beneficiaries of mining's vital financial bonanza. Residents of several small towns in northeastern Argentina are protesting against openpit mining ventures, which use large quantities of explosives to blast the rock where the minerals are hidden, cyanide in the leaching process, and huge amounts of water.
