Depictions Of Beauty On Cosmopolitan Magazine: Content Analysis Of Covers (1959-2014), Azalee Maslow
Depictions Of Beauty On Cosmopolitan Magazine: Content Analysis Of Covers (1959-2014), Azalee Maslow
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The media, especially advertisers, have long used beautiful women as an ideal image for attracting viewers and selling products. American women have been portrayed as, ideally, thin Caucasians with blonde hair and blue eyes. Research has found that women compare themselves to the beautiful women in advertising and in turn have negative feelings towards their own appearance. This thesis’ goal is to find whether the ideal American woman has changed through a content analysis of the women on the covers of Cosmopolitan magazine over the past 55 years, 1959 through 2014. This content analysis will focus on how the covers …
Media Literacy And Girl Empowerment: The Midriff, Lolita And The Pseudo Empowered, Amanda Ghosh
Media Literacy And Girl Empowerment: The Midriff, Lolita And The Pseudo Empowered, Amanda Ghosh
Honors College Theses
This thesis explores the cooptation of authentic girl power by mainstream media designed to sell normative sexuality, consumption practices and a pseudo empowered self. It explores the sexualization of girls in the media and girls’ educational and community engagement with media in the context of empowerment. From an expansive feminist and girls’ studies foundation this project seeks to emphasize the importance of media literacy for girls and aims to address the gap in feminist scholarship on media literacy and educational programming for girls’ empowerment. The thesis examines and connects women’s studies literatures, Rosalind Gills’ Midriff Theory and Gigi Durham’s notion …

A Journey Of Tears: What They Don't Tell You About America, A Memoir, Nilufer Gokmen
Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones
This capstone project explores different themes ranging from bureaucracy to suburban life, from popularity of guns in the South to suburban life and metal fandom, both borrowing ideas from scholars who have done research on these subjects before as well as employing different experiences of mine as an international student, trying to survive in a country where international students are not much welcomed in practise. Comparing my own experiences with other people's experiences, especially with those who are from other Middle Eastern countries, this project aims to show how life can be hard for foreign students, and how little Americans …
Media Literacy For The 21st Century. A Response To "The Need For Media Education In Democratic Education", Peter Levine
Media Literacy For The 21st Century. A Response To "The Need For Media Education In Democratic Education", Peter Levine
Democracy & Education
We cannot pretend to educate young people for citizenship and political participation without teaching them to understand and use the new media, which are essential means of expressing ideas, forming public opinions, and building institutions and movements. But the challenge of media literacy education is serious. Students need advanced and constantly changing skills to be effective online. They must understand the relationship between the new media and social and political institutions, a topic that is little understood by even the most advanced social theorists. And they must develop motivations to use digital media for civic purposes, when no major institutions …

Distant Neighbors: Shifting Borders Of Comedy, Identity, And Conflict In Andean Bolivia, Jennifer A. North
Open Access Theses
Counter to popular expectations, marginalized peoples—including those who have long suffered from racism and discrimination—are sometimes active and enthusiastic consumers of media products that portray them in potentially negative ways. For example, El Cholo Juanito y Richard Douglas (CJRD), a Peruvian television comedy based on stereotypical representations of Quechua migrants and assimilated mestizo city dwellers, has enjoyed great popularity in highland Bolivia from 2005 to the present, including in the Quechua-speaking town of Morado Q’asa. Based on in-depth field research and a series of personal interviews, this thesis explores the reception of CJRD in Morado Q’asa to analyze the construction …

Legacy: Producing A Feature Film, Geenah Ali Krisht
Collection of Engaged Learning
The art of film—making movies—is often portrayed as something glamorous or as some sort of fun hobby. It can be glamorous, and it often is a fun hobby-turned-career. However, when you break it down, creating a feature film is patience, dedication, people skills, creative problem solving, sleep deprivation, and hard work. This report outlines the experience I had producing my first feature-length film.

The Incitement Of Terrorism On The Internet: Legal Standards, Enforcement, And The Role Of The European Union, Ezekiel Rediker
The Incitement Of Terrorism On The Internet: Legal Standards, Enforcement, And The Role Of The European Union, Ezekiel Rediker
Michigan Journal of International Law
Consider this sentence: “The Shining Path is a heroic organization.” Over the past thirty years, the Shining Path has waged a violent guerilla war against the Peruvian government, prompting the European Union to designate the group as a terrorist organization. In certain European countries, speech inciting or glorifying terrorist organizations is criminalized. As a result, citizens risk prosecution if they do not carefully limit what they say about the Shining Path, or other terrorist organizations. But where does free speech end and incitement to terrorism begin? The debate over free speech and incitement to terrorism is actively being played out …
