Erin: A Portal To Resources For Higher Education In Neuroscience, Richard F. Olivo, Joseph R. Burdo, Robert Calin-Jagemen, William Grisham, Monica L. Linden, Robert L. Rosenberg, Laura L. Symonds, Janice E. Thornton Jul 2015

Erin: A Portal To Resources For Higher Education In Neuroscience, Richard F. Olivo, Joseph R. Burdo, Robert Calin-Jagemen, William Grisham, Monica L. Linden, Robert L. Rosenberg, Laura L. Symonds, Janice E. Thornton

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

ERIN, Educational Resources in Neuroscience, is the Society for Neuroscience's web portal to selected, high- quality materials for higher education. A Board of Editors approves resources after describing them and classifying them by topic, subtopic, media type, author, and appropriate educational level. Some resources are also accompanied by reviews and ratings from faculty who have used the resource. These features make a search of ERIN far more useful than a typical Google search.

ERIN's development was funded by the National Science Foundation with a three-year grant to SfN. Along the way, various unexpected problems arose and solutions were found, many …

Paper Fetishes: The Place Of The Book In A Digital Ecosystem, Joshua King Jul 2015

Paper Fetishes: The Place Of The Book In A Digital Ecosystem, Joshua King

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article studies the form of the electronic book as part of a complex digital ecosystem, and it finds that the remediated book's environment fundamentally alters its form and meaning. The article examines the remediated book's place in one digital ecosystem in particular: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda, 2011). Skyrim's books, at first glance, are simply a part of the game's environment, but on closer inspection, the game's recreated books reveal much about how electronic texts operate in a larger digital system. The game-created book is different from both of its real-world cousins, the physical codex and the …

The Moderating Effect Of Attachment Behaviors On The Association Between Video Game Use, Time Together As A Problem, And Relationship Quality, Stella Christine Dobry Jul 2015

The Moderating Effect Of Attachment Behaviors On The Association Between Video Game Use, Time Together As A Problem, And Relationship Quality, Stella Christine Dobry

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test whether video game use is associated with more problems with spending time together among married couples, whether problems with time together are associated with relationship quality, and whether attachment behaviors can moderate the association between time together as a problem and relationship quality. Previous studies have found a negative association between excessive video game use and couple relationship outcomes. Excessive video game use may negatively impact relationships by taking away from time spent on shared leisure and relationship maintenance activities. The Double ABCx model provided a theoretical framework for understanding how attachment …

Nature's Keepers?: Constructing Women’S Environmentalism In Green Marketing, Cara Okopny Jul 2015

Nature's Keepers?: Constructing Women’S Environmentalism In Green Marketing, Cara Okopny

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article dissects the current state of discourse in environmental advertising aimed at women, exploring the language and imagery from a feminist perspective. Examining three green advertising campaigns pervasive in women's lifestyle media in recent years, I discover that the gendered origins of environmental discourse in American popular culture continue to impact efforts to sell environmentalism to women. I trace the evolution of definitions of environmentalism in American popular culture, and comment on the debate among feminist environmentalists and media critics over these definitions. I highlight common tropes surrounding environmentalism in green advertising, such as nature's presumed purity and its …

The Enablers Of The Indian Performing Arts: Government, Media, The Indian High Commission, Donors And Event Managers, Chitra Varaprasad, Uma Rajan, Shankar Rajan, Seshan Ramaswami

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Arts institutions and artistes thrive in an ecological system of supporters and facilitators. They enable artistes to focus their attention and energy on practice and teaching of the art forms and on creating new productions. They enable institutions to slowly grow and attain self-sustainability in the long run by subsidising expenses on housing, productions, and fees of visiting artistes. They also provide a platform for students to perform and to improve through competition. Students also benefit from scholarships for advanced study. In this chapter, we describe briefly the roles played by various enablers of Indian performing art forms over the …

The Association Between Time Spent Using Entertainment Media And Marital Quality In A Contemporary Dyadic National Sample, Jeffrey P. Dew, Sarah Tulane Jun 2015

The Association Between Time Spent Using Entertainment Media And Marital Quality In A Contemporary Dyadic National Sample, Jeffrey P. Dew, Sarah Tulane

Faculty Publications

This study used the Actor Partner Interdependence Model and a national sample of married couples (N = 1368) to explore the relationship between entertainment media use and marital satisfaction, conflict, and perceived marital instability. Entertainment media-use included newer types of media (e.g., social networking websites) as well as traditional media (e.g., television). A number of negative relationships between media use and wives’ and husbands’ marital quality emerged. Husbands’ use of social networking websites, in particular, was associated with many of the marital quality variables. The effect sizes of media use were small, however. We also explored whether the relationship …

A Phenomenological Multi-Case Study About Social Success Skills, Aspirations, And Related Media Experiences, Darnel Degand Jun 2015

A Phenomenological Multi-Case Study About Social Success Skills, Aspirations, And Related Media Experiences, Darnel Degand

The Qualitative Report

The social success skills valued and ultimately acquired by youth during their formative years can be better understood by examining the social spaces, processes, and interactions that are related to their personal aspirations and related media experiences. Using a phenomenological approach, I conducted a year-long multi-case study about two Black male high school students’ thoughts on social success, their aspirations, their social experiences, and their experiences with media. The participants were selected using purposeful sampling. I collected data through semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and observations. I performed analyses by using the hermeneutic cycle which requires one to repeatedly read text, …

The Duke Rape Case Five Years Later: Lessons For The Academy, The Media, And The Criminal Justice System, Dan Subotnik Jun 2015

The Duke Rape Case Five Years Later: Lessons For The Academy, The Media, And The Criminal Justice System, Dan Subotnik

Akron Law Review

The time that has since passed allows for a more comprehensive evaluation of the cultural meaning of the Duke Rape case. This is the goal of the newly released “Institutional Failures,” which constitutes a point of departure for this review. The aim of this article is first to clarify the contribution this book makes to an understanding of the case. I will describe and analyze the content of the nine essays that make up the book; I will make reference to related works, and I will offer a concluding evaluation of the book’s likely impact.

Information Overload, Multi-Tasking, And The Socially Networked Jury: Why Prosecutors Should Approach The Media Gingerly, Andrew E. Taslitz Jun 2015

Information Overload, Multi-Tasking, And The Socially Networked Jury: Why Prosecutors Should Approach The Media Gingerly, Andrew E. Taslitz

School of Law Faculty Publications

The rise of computer technology, the internet, rapid news dissemination, multi-tasking, and social networking have wrought changes in human psychology that alter how we process news media. More specifically, news coverage of high-profile trials necessarily focuses on emotionally-overwrought, attention-grabbing information disseminated to a public having little ability to process that information critically. The public’s capacity for empathy is likewise reduced, making it harder for trial processes to overcome the unfair prejudice created by the high-profile trial. Market forces magnify these changes. Free speech concerns limit the ability of the law to alter media coverage directly, and the tools available to …
