How To Save...A Nation? Televisual Fiction Post-9/11, Melissa R. Ames
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
To claim that the national tragedy of 9/11 is a defining moment in thefirst decade of the tV1renty-first century for the United States is not profound, nor is the statement that it directly and indirectly influenced thecultural production within American society throughout these years.Regardless of the obviousness of these claims, it is exactly upon theseassumptions that this chapter rests. In the years following the attackson the World Trade Center and Pentagon, cultural products have beensites for interrogating and remediating the trauma that 9 /11 causedfor the citizens of a country that believed itself to be untouchable.Although these cultural concerns were played …

Musical Artists Capitalizing On Hybrid Identities: A Case Study Of Drake The “Authentic” “Black” “Canadian” “Rapper”, Amara Pope
FIMS Publications
This study is an exploration of identity politics through an examination of the ways in which musical artists use the medium of music videos to create marketable, hybrid identities. With the rise of social media and the online consumption of information, music videos play a central role in global, cultural flows. I argue that hybrid identities are constructed by musical artists to gain popularity through the form of ethno-marketing. I include literature surrounding diaspora and hybridity to understand how hybrid identities become a production of heritage and human capital. By utilizing music videos specifically to construct their hybrid identities, musical …

Film Tourism And Expectation: Using The Hallyu Wave To Model How Governments And Media Exports Influence National Image, Aishat O. Bello
UROP Posters
Film tourism encompasses the interest, investment and influence that exported media products can contribute to cultural globalization, and subsequent visitation of a nation. The Korean Wave or Hallyu wave has been studied and commended for its rapid spread and growing popularity within Asia and more recently, on a more global scale. By comparing and contrasting the methods used by the Korean government to enhance Hallyu, with several trade deals made by the US government to support Hollywood, we can see how the effects of film tourism were directed towards modifying perspectives on Korean culture. A few consequences of making trade …

Honors Capstones
This study tests the hypothesis that people who have stronger media literacy skills and who better understand social media, framing, agenda setting, and entertainment/soft news – will be better able to make informed political decisions. The author researched social media, framing, agenda setting, and entertainment/soft news in an effort to better understand how the media influences the American people and American government and what the effects of those influences might be. As technology continues to advance, the way American people interact with politics and the government changes. Representing Teachers As Criminals In The News: A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Atlanta Schools’ “Cheating Scandal”, Theresa Catalano, Lauren Gatti
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
On April 1, 2015, 11 Atlanta teachers accused of changing answers on their students’ standardized tests were convicted of racketeering and sentenced to 5–20 years in prison. Despite ample news coverage, few sources investigated teachers’ motivations for altering students’ responses or explored what the consequences would have been if student scores had not been changed to passing. Moreover, the fact that the teachers’ actions resulted from systemic problems associated with working within a high-stakes testing environment is glossed over and all but lost in the reporting of the “Cheating Scandal” events. The authors conduct a critical multimodal analysis of how …
A Multimedia Analysis Of The Diversification Of Fashion Journalism, Kayla C. Boyd
A Multimedia Analysis Of The Diversification Of Fashion Journalism, Kayla C. Boyd
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Traditionally, women have turned to fashion magazines to know what is trending, how they should dress and what beauty tips they should try. However, in this generation, print magazines as a whole are becoming less relevant due to blogs, YouTube, smartphone apps, social media and other digital sources. "The web has made it possible for ordinary consumers to reach a mass audience" (Mcquarrie, Miller, & Phillips, 2013); thus fashion influence is no longer coming only from advertisers and models with unrealistic features, it reflects the tastes of ordinary people. Through a literature review and content analysis, this research demonstrates how …

Intersectional Analysis Of Female Prisoner's Depictions In Orange Is The New Black, Arianne Sharie Watson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this research is to critically analyze Orange is the New Black (OITNB) by conducting an intersectional analysis of seasons 1 and 2. Imprisoned women are excluded from discussions about their oppression. Incarcerated women lack: 1) the four domains of power, which are hegemonic, interpersonal, disciplinary, and structural; and 2) control of their representations. Media’s representations about imprisoned women are accessible through movies, television news, television shows, and newspapers; which have consistently depicted women in prison inaccurately as “bad”, violent, and sexually insatiable. The women who write prison narratives books are not representative of the female prison system, …

Rural Reality: How Reality Television Portrayals Of Appalachian People Impact Their View Of Their Culture, Ivy Jude Elise Brashear
Rural Reality: How Reality Television Portrayals Of Appalachian People Impact Their View Of Their Culture, Ivy Jude Elise Brashear
Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development
Appalachian people have faced stereotyping of their culture and region in popular culture, news media, and art for generations. For more than 150 years, images of the region have been extracted by outside media makers and disseminated widely, solidifying the “hillbilly” stereotype in the national lexicon. This study focuses on such images in reality television shows about Appalachia, and seeks to determine whether or not those images, and the proliferation of them, has an impact on the ways in which Appalachian people understand and accept their own culture.
Misuse Of Executive Power As An Obstacle To Democratic Institutional Reform In Argentina, Anna C. Brito
Misuse Of Executive Power As An Obstacle To Democratic Institutional Reform In Argentina, Anna C. Brito
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis explores three different institutions that underwent proposed reforms during the President of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (2007-2015): the intelligence sector, the judiciary, and the media. Though the stated purpose of these reforms was to make more democratic institutions that had suffered under the military junta, in reality they were generally unsuccessful. Furthermore these institutions would be further changed under her successor, Mauricio Macri, still with little improvement to democracy. When examining these changes in the context of hyper-presidentialism, it is apparent that the misuse of executive power is a serious impediment to meaningful institutional reform.
