Indigeneity And Early American Literature, Andrew Newman Feb 2017

Indigeneity And Early American Literature, Andrew Newman

Department of English Faculty Publications

Summary Indigeneity is the abstract noun form of “indigenous,” defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “Born or produced naturally in a land or region”; in conventional usage, it refers primarily to “aboriginal inhabitants or natural products.” Indigeneity has a conceptually complex relationship to American literary history before 1830, insofar as, for most of the history of the field, “early American literature” has predominately referred to works written in European languages, scripts, and genres, produced by peoples of European origin and their descendants. Within this framework, until Native Americans began adopting and adapting these languages, scripts, and genres for their …

Uses And Gratification Of Spiritual And Religious Music In Egypt: A Descriptive Analysis Study, Hend El-Taher Feb 2017

Uses And Gratification Of Spiritual And Religious Music In Egypt: A Descriptive Analysis Study, Hend El-Taher

Theses and Dissertations

Media is one important constituent of the culture in a society. Its importance is reflected in the contents it presents especially in religion and music. The way both religion and music are blended and used as a medium to gratify certain needs is the interest of this study. In that sense, the relation between religions and music is examined, how music was perceived by religious figures, what disputes the music provoked, and how spiritual music is used as an intrapersonal, interpersonal, or a mass communication tool to influence the audience cognitively, behaviorally, and attitudinally. Accordingly, a descriptive survey is conducted …

Rethinking Children's Advertising Policies For The Digital Age, Angela J. Campbell Jan 2017

Rethinking Children's Advertising Policies For The Digital Age, Angela J. Campbell

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article describes major changes in how video content and advertising is delivered to consumers. Digital technologies such as broadband allow consumers to stream or download programming. Smart phones and tablets allow consumers to view screen content virtually anywhere at any time. Advertising has become personalized and integrated with other content.

Despite these major changes in the media markets, the framework for regulating advertising to children has not changed very much since the 1990s. This article argues that the existing regulatory framework must be reinvented to protect children in the digital age. It uses Google’s recently introduced YouTube Kids app …

Opportunities For Applying Biomedical Production And Manufacturing Methods To The Development Of The Clean Meat Industry, Liz Specht, Christie Lagally Jan 2017

Opportunities For Applying Biomedical Production And Manufacturing Methods To The Development Of The Clean Meat Industry, Liz Specht, Christie Lagally

Scale-up and Manufacturing of Cell-based Therapies V

Clean meat (meat grown using cell culture methods, rather than obtained from animal slaughter) is an emergent biotechnology industry that will ameliorate the serious environmental, sustainability, global public health, and animal welfare concerns of conventional animal agriculture. Critical Technology Elements (CTEs) for clean meat include immortalized cell lines for meat animals (e.g. chicken, pig, cattle, and turkey), xeno-free media optimized for proliferation and maturation of these cell lines, edible or biodegradable scaffolding for tissue engineering, and efficient bioreactors for cell proliferation and differentiation.

While many biomedical products and tools can already be applied to the CTEs of clean meat, the …

Copycat Crime, Jamie Licausi Jan 2017

Copycat Crime, Jamie Licausi

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

This Honors thesis explores the links between media and copycat crime, and what media factors influence the triggering of copycat crime. Many scientists propose different psychological mechanisms that cause people to copy crimes portrayed in media. Copycat crime occurs on a global scale, and different countries have implemented various government policies to prevent the growth of media generated copycat crime. By examining the policies enforced by different countries, this paper proposes a solution to this growing social problem. Overall, the purpose is to identify why copycat crimes occur, and how they can be prevented for the future. Several case studies …

Feeding Our Identities:Buzzfeed Quizzes As A Tool For Personal Identification In The Social Digital Age, Sarah M. Quinn

Communication & Media Studies Theses

Specializing in “listicle” media and personality identification quizzes, BuzzFeed is enormously popular among college students. Audiences apply the identities they are ascribed through Buzzfeed quizzes to inform their communication within a discourse community, and as individual expression. This paper examines college students’ discourse that surrounds their use of BuzzFeed identity quizzes. The goal of this study is to understand how the consumption of these quizzes constructs personal identities and informs the communication of these identities.

Compressible Media For Water Treatment, Christine Forkins, Steven Kammermeier, Antonio Musso Jan 2017

Compressible Media For Water Treatment, Christine Forkins, Steven Kammermeier, Antonio Musso

Capstone Design Expo Posters

Tertiary water treatment is used to remove total suspended solids (TSS) from wastewater. Suez uses compressible media for their tertiary water treatment. There have been supplier issues in the past such as unreliability, long lead-times, unknown manufacturing process, and chances of resale. The chance of resale is an important issue because the specifications may change from one supplier to another.

The group was tasked to characterize different types of compressible media for water treatment, design a lab scale filtration unit, and design and manufacture a new media to be tested. In order to gain an operational expenditure advantage, Suez accomplishes …
