How State Legislators Can Use The Media To Affect Policy Change In State Government Agencies: A Case Study With The Department Of Motor Vehicles, Alisha Gallon
Journalism
This study was done to understand how a member of the state legislature used the media to effect policy change. This subject is discussed using the California Department of Motor Vehicles as a case study. There is a long-standing and well-understood relationship between legislators and the media. It is common knowledge that legislators in the minority party use the media to pressure members of the majority party. Research shows those in the minority benefit from this kind of coverage. However previous studies are mostly silent about whether using the media to pressure the party in control of the government actually …

Examining The Relationship Between Media Consumption And Kenya's Political Culture, Gilbert Kipkoech
Theses and Dissertations
Using data collected from 206 participants, this country-specific study examines the relationship between media consumption and Kenya’s political culture. Political scientists and communicators contend that political culture encompasses several aspects. In this study, only four aspects of a country’s political orientations (culture) and its relationship with the media are examined (a) Political participation, (b) political trust, (c) patriotism, and (d) inter-ethnic attitudes. Drawing on past research, the study establishes a link between media use and political attitudes and behaviors of the Kenyan people, operationalized in the study as the political culture. While the literature is divided on whether the media …

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
NCAA Division I universities are constantly under a threat of image loss due to both internal and external factors. The purpose of this study was to examine past image repair campaigns executed after a crisis by the following NCAA Division I member universities: Ohio State University, Louisville University, and the University of Maryland. Empowering The Plus Size Body Using Dance As Therapy, Ashley Sampson
Empowering The Plus Size Body Using Dance As Therapy, Ashley Sampson
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
In Western society, having the “ideal” body image and size is a societal issue. It is advertised throughout media outlets that the “ideal” body is what should be desired, and any other body type is “abnormal”. This capstone thesis focused on the effectiveness of dance as therapy and changing the perspectives of all body types, to support and empower all bodies including plus-sized bodies. The use of individual interviews, in an open dialogue model, with a select few members (3) of Soul thru Sole, including the CEO of the dance company; which focuses on empowering women no matter their age, …
Moral Foundations Of U.S. Political News Sources, William Edward Padfield
Moral Foundations Of U.S. Political News Sources, William Edward Padfield
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The media ecosystem has grown, and political opinions have diverged such that there are competing conceptions of objective truth. Commentators often point to political biases in news coverage as a catalyst for this political divide. The Moral Foundations Dictionary (MFD) facilitates identification of ideological leanings in text through frequency of the occurrence of certain words. Through web scraping, the researcher extracted articles from popular news sources’ websites, calculated MFD word frequencies, and identified words’ respective valences. This process attempts to uncover news outlets’ positive or negative endorsements of certain moral dimensions concomitant with a particular ideology. In Experiment 1, the …

Epistemological Threads Of American Journalism, Currie Dickerson
Epistemological Threads Of American Journalism, Currie Dickerson
Pepperdine Policy Review
National civil discourse is intricately tied to a unique epistemology – the theory of knowledge and resulting methodologies – of American journalism. The rise of digital technology platforms in a democratic society has resulted in an unprecedented battle for the hearts and minds of a pluralistic people. While the spectrum and veracity of individual opinion appears to have reached its extremes, reliable and truthful sources are rapidly disappearing in the digital age. During the early 20 th century, the American press engaged in a rich dialogue within communities and was recognized as a stimulator of public debate. However, a shift …
The Rise And Fall Of The Media As An Elite Institution, Zachary Hayes
The Rise And Fall Of The Media As An Elite Institution, Zachary Hayes
Pepperdine Policy Review
The election of Donald Trump as President has brought much attention to the partisan media coverage of his administration. Concern about the one-sided nature of reporting and the alteration of longtime standards has caused trust in media to decline sharply. To better understand the current situation, this paper looks at the history of American media, from the initial partisan stage to the development of broad standards. It then examines the recent drift back toward partisanship as an explanation for why trust in this longstanding institution has diminished.
Radios Life Expectancy, Edward Krikorian
Radios Life Expectancy, Edward Krikorian
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The purpose of this paper is to predict the future of the radio industry by evaluating its origins and current status in society. The invention of radio served a significant importance as to how we communicate on a daily basis, and it still lives on today. The broadcasting system is currently used to communicate to thousands of people at once, but that wasn’t the case during its initiation. The “Founding Fathers” of radio such as Guglielmo Marconi, Nikola Tesla, Lee Deforest and Edward Howard Armstrong allowed us to communicate with others over radio waves. I have examined the history of …

An Examination Of Factors Associated With Body Appreciation, Sociocultural Attitudes Of Appearance, And Ratings Of Diverse Performing Artists, Stephanie Rathjen
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Introduction: Multiple studies have found that performing artists have low body image which may be associated with the media’s portrayal of performers. Low body image can cause negative health effects including depression and eating disorders. This study explores body attitudes among performing and non-performing arts students and the possible media influences on those attitudes.
Methods: Undergraduate students (n=522) were asked to participate in an anonymous online survey regarding their perceptions of their individual body perception. During the survey, they were randomized to watch a video depicting either slim mostly Caucasian performers (video A) or performers of different ethnicities …

Syrian Crisis Representation In The Media: The Cnn Effect, Framing, And Tone, Savannah S. Day
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
Over the past seven years of the Syrian Civil War, Syrian refugees have been painted in a negative light by news media outlets around the world. History of media coverage regarding global humanitarian crises shows that with various tools and processes, media can shape public opinion and policy in whichever direction it desires, and oftentimes policymakers and the public are quick, as well as emotional, to react. In this paper, my objectives are to analyze specific examples of this CNN Effect phenomena within news coverage of the Syrian refugee crisis, as well as generally explain the negatively correlating relationship between …

Imagine a giant asteroid on a direct collision with Earth. That is the equivalent of what we face now with climate change, yet we dither. ~James Hansen
Climate change is not a new concept; scientists have been studying it since the early 19th century. In 1824, French physicist Joseph Fourier described the earth’s natural greenhouse effect; however, no one could predict the importance of this early discovery. Nearly 40 years later John Tyndall proved that water vapor and other gases created the greenhouse effect. Just 35 years later, Svante Arrhenius published the theory that burning fossil fuels added …
