Hate Speech In Egyptian Television Talk Shows: A Qualitative Study, Caroline Elias

This research aims to examine hate speech in Egyptian talk shows. Firstly, the research examines how international and Egyptian frameworks deal with the doctrine of freedom of speech and expression in relation to the hate speech issue. Secondly, the research investigates the issue of hate speech in Egyptian talk shows through holding in-depth qualitative interviews with Egyptian media practitioners, media experts, and media policy and decision-makers. The hypothesis of the study is that the spread of hate speech in Egyptian talk shows is mostly intended to serve political and institutional agendas. The #metoo campaign became a worldwide phenomenon, through the tweet made against the Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein by the actress Alyssa Milano on October 15, 2017. In India, the campaign took off on October 7, 2018, when actress Tanushree Dutta made serious allegations against the actor Nana Patekar, narrating her experiences while she was working with him in a film in 2008. As inhabitants of the Information Age, we are increasingly aware of the amount and kind of data that technology platforms collect on us. Far less publicized, however, is how much data news organizations collect on us as we read the news online and how they allow third parties to collect that personal data as well. A handful of studies by computer scientists reveal that, as a group, news websites are among the Internet’s worst offenders when it comes to tracking their visitors.

The marketplace of ideas has been a centerpiece of free speech jurisprudence for a century. According to the marketplace theory, the vigorous competition of ideas, free from government interference, is the surest path to truth. As our metaphorical marketplace has moved online, the competition has never been so heated. We should be drowning in truth. Yet, in reality, truth has perhaps never been more elusive.

This paper discusses how the Holodomor (Ukrainian Genocide of 1932-1933) was effectively covered up by Stalin with the help of compliant actors in the West. A confluence of media, political, and economic interests in the West was critical in successfully covering up Stalin's crimes against the Ukrainian people.
