The Effect Of Instructional Gaming Upon Absenteeism: The First Step, Layman E. Allen, Dana B. Martin
The Effect Of Instructional Gaming Upon Absenteeism: The First Step, Layman E. Allen, Dana B. Martin

In assessing'an experimental instructional gaming program in seventh- and eighth-grade mathematics at Pelham Middle School, Detroit, MI, absenteeism was taken as the most pervasive and pragmatic measure of student attitudes toward the learning environmentof the mathematics classroom. The experimental learning environment contained three major elements in addition to regular mathematics instruction: EQUATIONS, a problem-generating type of game; a twice-a-week tournament arranged to award reinforcements frequently and equally among the participants as well as to individualize the learning experience foreach student; and the organization of classes into teams designed to elicit cooperation. Experimental and control classes were taught by the same …

Improving Skill In Applying Mathematical Ideas: A Preliminary Report On The Instructional Gaming Program At Pelham Middle School In Detroit, Layman E. Allen, Joan Ross
Other Publications
Performance of 237 students in ten 8th-grade mathematics classes Was assessed to measure their ability to solve'problems which involve only computation and problems which involve both computation and recognition of the relevance of a particular mathematical idea which is indispensable to-the solution of the problem. Pretests and post-tests focused upon 21 mathematical ideas which are presented in the present.series of IMP (Instructional Math Play) Kits, 16-page pamphlet simulations of a computer programmed to play EQUATIONS like a good teacher rather than like a good player.
Results show that the combination of playing EQUATIONS over two-year period and then working intensively …

Investigation Of Sufficient Conditions For A Non-Regular Problem In The Calculus Of Variations., Sam Waldman
Investigation Of Sufficient Conditions For A Non-Regular Problem In The Calculus Of Variations., Sam Waldman
Student Work
In his paper, Ewing has established sufficient conditions for a non-regular problem in the calculus of variations. In chapter 2, we shall discuss his method. In chapter 3, we will provide an example in which the main result of [1] will apply. In this chapter, we shall state for your convenience some definitions, theorems and conditions from [2]. We will suppose that there is a region of R of xyz 1/Space in which the integrand function f(x,y,z) has continuous partial derivatives up to and including those of the fourth order. The general problem of the calculus of variations is finding …
Maximal And Minimal Topologies., Asit Baran Raha Dr.
Maximal And Minimal Topologies., Asit Baran Raha Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Given a topological property Ï€ and a pon-void set X, let Ï€(X) denote the set of topologies on X with property Ï€. 7 (X) is obviously partially ordered by inclusion, A topologi- cal space (X,T) is minimal if T is a minimal element in T (X). (X, T) is said to be maximal Ï€ if T1 1s a maximalelement in Ï€(X), The study of maximal and minimal topological space is, as a matter of fact, a study of maximal Ï€ and minimal Ï€ spaces. Topological spaces closely related to minimal T sp aces are T-closed and KatetoV T spaces, (X,T) …

Studies In Boolean Algebras And Measure Theory., K. P. S. Bhaskara Rao Dr.
Doctoral Theses
This Thesis is divided into six chapters the first three chapters constituting studies in Boolean algebras and the last three chapters constituting studies in measure theory. We give below a sketch of the main problems treated in this Thesis.A De composition theorem due to Sobczyk and Hammer (28] implies that strongly continuous charges on Boolean algebras play a role similar to that of nonatomic measures on Boolean g-algebras. CHAPTER 1. Rudin [25] and Knowles [14] gave necessary and sufficient conditions for the Boral o-ficld of a compact Hausdorff space to admit a nonatomic measure. But there are no necessary and …

A characterization of a class of totally nonnegative matrices whose inverses are M-matrices is given. It is then shown that if A is nonnegative of order n and A^-1 is an M-matrix, then the almost principal minors of A of all orders are nonnegative.

Linear Estimation: The Kalman-Bucy Filter, William Douglas Schindel
Linear Estimation: The Kalman-Bucy Filter, William Douglas Schindel
Graduate Theses - Mathematics
The problem of linear dynamic estimation, its solution as developed by Kalman and Bucy, and interpretations, properties and illustrations of that solution are discussed. The central problem considered is the estimation of the system state vector X, describing a linear dynamic system governed by
dx/dt = F(t)X(t) + G(t)U(t)
Y(t) = H(t)X(t) + V(t)
for observations of Y (system output), where V is a random observation-corrupting process, and U is a random system driving process.
An extension of the Kalman-Bucy filter to estimation in the absence of priori knowledge of the random process U and V is developed and illustrated.
A Topology On The Fundamental Group., Daniel William Atkinson
A Topology On The Fundamental Group., Daniel William Atkinson
Student Work
For an arbitrary topological space algebraic topology prescribes a construction for a fundamental group. There is a natural way of imposing a topology on this set. We will examine this construction and the topological space which results. We use the following notation and definitions: 1. I f X and Y are topological spaces and ACX, BCY and if f:X+Y is a map, we write f: (X,A)➔(Y,B) if f(A)cB. 2. (Y,B)CX,A)={f: (X,A)+(Y,B)I f is continuous}. 3. 1=[0,1], the closed unit interval; i={O,l}, the points O and 1. 4. If X is a topological space and a£X, then R is an equivalence …
The Axiom Of Choice For Countable Sets., Roger L. Mansfield
The Axiom Of Choice For Countable Sets., Roger L. Mansfield
Student Work
In this thesis axioms for set theory will be presented which include the well-known axiom of choice. These axioms, together with their associated primitives, defined terms, and theorems will be referred to as the BGN (for Bernays, Godel, and von Neumann) theory or sets, or just BGN. BGN, without the axiom of' choice and theorems requiring it, will be denoted by BGN 1. It will be shown that if a proposition attributing a property to countable sets can be proved in BGN, then it can be proved in BGN, by showing that the axiom of choice (Zermelo’s form) when stated …

Educational Mathematical Games As An Aid To Learning With Seventh Grade Mathematics Students At Wahlquist Junior High, Lewis Riley Taylor
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
One of the trends in mathematics has been the introduction of educational games as learning devices . A student's attitude toward mathematics is recognized to be very high when games are used. Walter Cronkite, on CBS television, summed up the promise of educational gaming when he said, "By participating, by playing a game , an other - wise dull subject becomes fascinating and unforgettable to the student." (Nesbitt, 1971, p. 2) Bradfield states it in this manner:
Many teachers of mathematics are unbelievably boring in their approach to teaching. Consequently , many potentially strong students never develop any great liking …
Effects Of Points Exchangeable For Grades On Junior High Mathematics Students, James Edward Perkins
Effects Of Points Exchangeable For Grades On Junior High Mathematics Students, James Edward Perkins
Master of Education Theses
This paper presents the effects of a token system used in a regular eighth grade mathematics class. Two classes containing 21 and 23 students were implemented. The study was designed to increase attendance, behavior, and mathematical achievement in a test group and measure the effects against a control group. The scores revealed a significant difference only in attendance favoring the test group.
Recommendations included pairing stronger reinforcers with the points used and suggestions for future research.

Wc Spaces: Between T[Subscript 1] And T[Subscript 2]., Walter L. Rice
Student Work
In this paper a separation property is introduced which is a consequence of the Hausdorff separation axiom r2 , but not conversely. This property is characterized by a convergence property of neighborhood filterbases of points in a topological space which is defined and shown to be intermediate to standard convergence and accumulation of neighborhood filterbases.

This thesis 1s devoted to a study of measures vith emplas sis on nonatonie nea sures. Me briefrly desoribe here the work carried out in various chapters. In Chapter 1, we study various aspects of nonatomic nea sures based on some characterisations obtained early in the Chapter. In Chapter 2, the problem - when a mixture of nonatoftic mea sures is nonatomic - is exanined. An example and rive sufficient conditions are given. In Chapter 3, we examine when a mixture of 1nvariant non-ergorlie mesures is non-ergodic. An example and three sufficient eonditions are given. In Chapter 4, we study …
