Spaces Of Order Arcs In Hyperspaces Of Subcontinua., Mark James Lynch Jan 1985

Spaces Of Order Arcs In Hyperspaces Of Subcontinua., Mark James Lynch

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eberhart, Nadler, and Nowell asked for which Peano continua X is it true that (GAMMA)(X), the space of order arcs in C(X), is homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube ? They answered the question affirmatively when X contains no free arcs. In Chapter IV, we characterize those 1-dimensional ANR('s) X for which (GAMMA)(X) is homeomorphic to . In Chapters I and II, we develop techniques for analyzing this problem and, in Chapter III, we also apply these techniques in answering some open questions concerning Whitney levels in C(X).

Development Of A Computer-Assisted Instruction Courseware Package In Statistics And A Comparative Analysis Of Three Management Strategies For This Courseware., Preston Dinkins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a tutorial computer-assisted instruction (CAI) lesson teaching the normal distribution and standard scores. Instruction on the normal curve, and unit-normal curve, z-scores, areas under the normal curve, and standard scores was given in this study. This CAI courseware was created in order to teach or review these concepts to graduate students in education. An evaluation of this CAI lesson was conducted. It consisted of a small scale pilot test, and a 2 x 3 factorial design experiment. The pilot test study was conducted so that reaction data to this software …

Effects Of Field-Dependence/Independence And Sex On Patterns Of Achievement And Grading In A First-Semester Calculus Course (Cognitive Style, Remedial Mathematics, Grading Bias, Appraisal, College), Timothy John Kelly Jan 1985

Effects Of Field-Dependence/Independence And Sex On Patterns Of Achievement And Grading In A First-Semester Calculus Course (Cognitive Style, Remedial Mathematics, Grading Bias, Appraisal, College), Timothy John Kelly

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was twofold: first, to investigate effects of field-dependence/independence (f-d/i), sex, and different types of audiovisual remedial instruction on mathematics achievement (Experiment I); second to investigate the effects of student and grader cognitive style (f-d/i) and sex on calculus test grades (Experiment II).

One hundred fifty first-semester calculus students, identified by an algebra/trigonometry pretest as requiring trigonometry remediation, served as subjects for Experiment I. As measures of f-d/i, the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) and The Miniaturized Rod and Frame Test (MRFT) were administered to the subjects, who were apportioned into six experimental groups, representing three …

On K(,2) Of Rings Of Integers Of Totally Real Number Fields (Birch-Tate, Steinberg, Class Number, Symbol, Zeta-Function)., Karl Friedrich Hettling Jan 1985

On K(,2) Of Rings Of Integers Of Totally Real Number Fields (Birch-Tate, Steinberg, Class Number, Symbol, Zeta-Function)., Karl Friedrich Hettling

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We study the finite abelian groups K(,2)(o), where o denotes the ring of integers of a totally real number field. As a major tool we employ the Birch-Tate conjecture which states that the order of K(,2)(o) can be computed via the Dedekind zeta-function. The odd part of this conjecture has been proved for abelian fields as a consequence of the Mazur-Wiles work on the "Main conjecture". After the preliminaries of chapter 1, we proceed in chapter 2 by deriving a formula for (zeta)(,F)(-1), where F denotes a totally real abelian number field. Using this formula we prove the congruence L …

Networks And Graphs, Brenda K. Tsao Jan 1985

Networks And Graphs, Brenda K. Tsao

Honors Capstones

Graph theory is a part of mathematics that has many practical applications. The study of graph theory began in 1736 with Leonard Euler’s work on the Konigsberg bridge problem. Konigsberg was a city built on a river with two islands and seven bridges. The question was posed as to whether you could start anywhere, cross each bridge exactly once, and end up at the starting point. Other problems that arise include scheduling routes for transportation systems that meet certain requirements such as distance, time, places stopped, and profits; and choosing the best times for replacement of equipment and the best …

The Assignment Problem, Diane Ferrara Jan 1985

The Assignment Problem, Diane Ferrara

Honors Capstones

In everyday life, and especially in business, situations arise which involve trying to gain the maximum profit for work, or trying to minimize loss. If each of us would investigate linear programming procedures, we could solve some of these everyday problems very quickly and efficiently. Linear programming procedures provide for solving realistic problems of everyday life. Specifically, the assignment problem can be used to delegate tasks to specific jobs in the best possible manner so as to obtain maximum feedback. There exist many methods and variations to the assignment problem and many applications of these methods.

A Study Of The Influence Of Logo On Locus Of Control, Attitudes Toward Mathematics, And Problem-Solving Ability In Children In Grades 4, 5, 6, Barbara W. Lewinter Edd

Dissertations

This study was designed to determine the influence of the Logo computer environment on locus of control, attitudes toward mathematics, and problem-solving ability. An experimental design was employed to test whether students in grades 4, 5, 6 who studied Logo showed more positive attitudes toward mathematics and scored higher on locus of control measures than a control group. The intact non-equivalent control group design was employed. The experimental group of 174 youngsters studied Logo for 12 weeks. Ninety-eight youngsters comprised the control group. Differences between groups pre and post Logo training were tested using two instruments, "A Study of Attitude …

On The Choice Of Shadow Prices For Project Evaluation., Jean Dreze Dr. Aug 1984

On The Choice Of Shadow Prices For Project Evaluation., Jean Dreze Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Manohar athanna is one of the remotest parts of Jhalawar District (Rajasthan, India). In the month of June it offers a striking contrast of scenic beauty and economic destitution. Agricultural activity is at a virtual standstill. The soil is very arid, irrigation practically non-existent, and by then the villagers (many of them tribals) have resolved to wait upon the good will of the rain gods.. Hence they have very little to do, or at least so they believe. Some gather wood to sell it in Manohar, walking miles under the scorching sun for a meagre reward, and adding slowly but …

The Expectation Of Success Using A Monte Carlo Factoring Method – Some Statistics On Quadratic Class Numbers, Duncan A. Buell Jul 1984

The Expectation Of Success Using A Monte Carlo Factoring Method – Some Statistics On Quadratic Class Numbers, Duncan A. Buell

Faculty Publications

A method has been proposed for factoring an integer N by using the structure of the class groups of quadratic fields of radicand – kN for various small multipliers k. We discuss the method and an implementation of the method, and various theoretical questions which have an impact on the practical use of the method in factoring. Some of the theoretical questions relate to the nature of class numbers and class groups; we present extensive statistical results on the class numbers and class groups of imaginary quadratic fields.

Error-Bounds For Gaussian Quadrature And Weighted-L1 Polynomial Approximation, Ronald A. Devore, L R. Scott Apr 1984

Error-Bounds For Gaussian Quadrature And Weighted-L1 Polynomial Approximation, Ronald A. Devore, L R. Scott

Faculty Publications

Error bounds for Gaussian quadrature are given in terms of the number of quadrature points and smoothness properties of the function whose integral is being approximated. An intermediate step involves a weighted-L' polynomial approximation problem which is treated in a more general context than that specifically required to bound the Gaussian quadrature error.

Cultural Commentary: What Hath Rubik Wrought?, Thomas E. Moore Mar 1984

Cultural Commentary: What Hath Rubik Wrought?, Thomas E. Moore

Bridgewater Review

In May, 1980 the Ideal Toy Company launched its newest offering, Rubik’s Cube, at a party in Hollywood, hosted by Zsa-Zsa Gabor and Solomon W. Golomb. Of course Gabor, like the cube, is a Hungarian product but who is Golomb? Well, he is a mathematician at the University of Southern California and an expert in number theory, combinatorics, abstract algebra and coding theory. Rubik invented the cube as an aid in teaching his students three-dimensional thinking. The cube has become the darling of algebraists, who use it to teach group theory to their students.

The Iterative Solution Of A Nonlinear Equation Using The Integral-Equation Formulations Of An Imbedding, Yves Beaudoin Jan 1984

The Iterative Solution Of A Nonlinear Equation Using The Integral-Equation Formulations Of An Imbedding, Yves Beaudoin

Digitized Theses

The thesis demonstrates how iterative algorithms for the numerical solution of a nonlinear equation can be deduced from the integral-equation representations of a homotopic imbedding.;As with continuation methods, we begin by imbedding the nonlinear equation in a continuous one-parameter family of problems by means of a homotopy. A root of the original equation is then the end point of the path of the homotopy's zeros which connects the root to an initial estimate. The path is formulated as the solution of a first-order initial value problem.;Instead of numerically solving the differential expression for the end point, as is the case …

Reflectivity: A Generalization Of Commutativity, Cancellation And Separativity In Semigroups, George Rubin Thomas Jan 1984

Reflectivity: A Generalization Of Commutativity, Cancellation And Separativity In Semigroups, George Rubin Thomas

Digitized Theses

The concept of reflectivity is interesting in that it is a simultaneous generalization of commutativity, cancellation and separativity. This thesis studies reflective semigroups as well as a related notion called reflexive subset of a semigroup.;In Chapter 2, a new notion called strongly viable semigroups is introduced. This notion is weaker than reflectivity. Some previously known results for reflective semigroups are shown to hold for strongly viable semigroups. The maximal separative homomorphic image of any given periodic strongly viable semigroup is described. Every homomorphism into a group of a reflective semigroup with a minimal one-sided ideal is shown to have a …

Ordered Models For The Lambda Calculus., Frederick Joseph Sullivan Jan 1984

Ordered Models For The Lambda Calculus., Frederick Joseph Sullivan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although the (lamda)-calculus has been studied for over fifty years, the first models for the lambda calculus were constructed by Dana Scott in 1972. Scott's models were constructed using inverse limits of continuous lattices. We investigate this inverse limit construction in the context of up-complete posets with zero. We show that the correspondence between an up-complete poset with zero P and its associated model for the (lamda)-calculus defines a monofunctor between appropriate categories. We calculate the values in the model corresponding to several combinators in the lambda calculus. Finally, we investigate certain submonoids of the monoid of combinators. We show …

Weierstrass Points On Gorenstein Curves., Carl Archer Widland Jan 1984

Weierstrass Points On Gorenstein Curves., Carl Archer Widland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis generalizes the classical definition of a Weierstrass point to integral projective Gorenstein curves. For X an integral projective Gorenstein curve of arithmetic genus g at least two, pick P(epsilon)X, and call the sheaf of dualizing differentials (omega). For a proper closed subscheme Z of X with support P and ideal sheaf I, define the degree of Z to be dim(,(//C)) O(,P)/I(,P). Call Z 1-special if dim(,(//C))Hom(I,O(,X)) (GREATERTHEQ) 1. In a manner analogous to the classical construction, one defines the wronskian of X to be some element (alpha) of (H('0) (X,(omega)('(CRTIMES) 1/2(g('2)+g)))). One defines the Weierstrass weight W(P) to …

Covariance Structural Models For Mathematics Achievement And Participation: An Investigation Of Sex Differences At The Level Of College Calculus Using Factorial Modeling, Thomas Patrick Dick Jan 1984

Covariance Structural Models For Mathematics Achievement And Participation: An Investigation Of Sex Differences At The Level Of College Calculus Using Factorial Modeling, Thomas Patrick Dick

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop covariance structural models that would explain, in terms of orthogonal latent variables, the correlations observed among mathematics achievement and participation measures and related cognitive and affective variables. A random sample of college calculus students (N = 268; 124 females and 144 males) was administered: (1) a battery of cognitive tests, including measures of spatial-visual ability, field independence/field dependence, and logical reasoning; and (2) a battery of affective scales, including measures of attitude toward mathematics, confidence, perceived usefulness of mathematics, effectance motivation, and locus of control. Measures of previous academic achievement and participation …

Some Problems In Bayesian Inference In A Nonclassical Setting (Operational Statistics, Betting Rates, Coherence), Carolyn Margaret Magness Jan 1984

Some Problems In Bayesian Inference In A Nonclassical Setting (Operational Statistics, Betting Rates, Coherence), Carolyn Margaret Magness

Doctoral Dissertations

The Bayesian inference strategy is studied within the framework of operational statistics (generalized sample spaces). Conditions necessary and sufficient for consistency and strict consistency of a complete betting rate assignment are derived. A constructive proof is given of the existence of a unique second-order probability which induces a given consistent and countably additive complete betting rate assignment. Continuity of the Bayesian inference strategy is investigated. Asymptotic properties of the Bayesian inference strategy are examined both at the level of betting rates and at the level of second-order probabilities.

Statistical Methods For Analysis Of Cancer Chemoprevention Experiments, Stephen Michael Kokoska Jan 1984

Statistical Methods For Analysis Of Cancer Chemoprevention Experiments, Stephen Michael Kokoska

Doctoral Dissertations

The experimental systems studied in this dissertation are designed to investigate the effect of diet on incidence rates of cancer. These investigations involve the chemical induction of tumors in experimental animals in order to test the chemopreventative effects of various substances. Both tumor number and rate of tumor development are important in evaluating the effects of a chemopreventative agent. This is made difficult, when multiple tumors occur, by the confounding of the number of induced tumors and their time of detection. This confounding occurs because experiments are terminated before all induced tumors have been detected. Fewer tumors observed in one …

Optimal Block Designs In One And Multi-Way Settings., Sunanda Bagchi Dr. Sep 1983

Optimal Block Designs In One And Multi-Way Settings., Sunanda Bagchi Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The study of optimality of block designs formally began with wald (1943) proving a very important optimality property, designated as D-optimality of Iatin Square. Desi gns in a given physical set up. Next Ehrenfield (1955) proved the E-optimality property of Latin Square Designs. Since then, the work in: the area has primarily consisted in evolving a number of useful opti- mality oriteria for oomparing block design in a reasonable set up given and oharacterizing and/or constructing desi gns saiisfying the so called optimality criteria developed. But it was not until 1958, when the theory was given a proper and precise …

The Changing Concept Of Change: The Derivative From Fermat To Weierstrass, Judith V. Grabiner Sep 1983

The Changing Concept Of Change: The Derivative From Fermat To Weierstrass, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Historically speaking, there were four steps in the development of today's concept of the derivative, which I list here in chronological order. The derivative was first used; it was then discovered; it was then explored and developed; and it was finally defined. That is, examples of what we now recognize as derivatives first were used on an ad hoc basis in solving particular problems; then the general concept lying behind them these uses was identified (as part of the invention of calculus); then many properties of the derivative were explained and developed in applications both to …

Some Results About Basic Elements, Cancellation And Efficient Generation Of Modules Over Laurent Polynomial Rings., S. Mandal Dr. Feb 1983

Some Results About Basic Elements, Cancellation And Efficient Generation Of Modules Over Laurent Polynomial Rings., S. Mandal Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Unless otherwise stated all rings are assumed to be commutative and Noetherian with finite Krull dimension and modules are finitely generated. There are three related questions in commutative algebra. They are about the existence of unimodular elements in projective modules, cancellation of projective modules and minimal number of generators for finitely generated modules. In particular, determining the minimal number of generators of ideals is also of great interest in this area.In this thesis we shall be concerned with the above questions in the case of Laurent polynomial rings. The thesis consists of three Chapters. The main results are presented in Chapters …
