Spectral Triples And Metric Aspects Of Geometry On Some Noncommutative Spaces., Partha Sarathi Chakraborty Dr. Feb 2003

Spectral Triples And Metric Aspects Of Geometry On Some Noncommutative Spaces., Partha Sarathi Chakraborty Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Quantization of mathematical theories is now more than half a century old idea in mathe- matics. It goes back to Gelfand-Naimarks seminal paper [37] in 1943. As the name suggests noncommutative geometry is the quantization" of differential geometry. It is the study of noncommutative algebras as if they were algebras of functions on spaces like the commuta- tive algebras associated to affine algebraic varieties, smooth manifolds, topological spaces. One can trace its roots in the Gelfand-Naimark theorems (1943, 37]). In modern terminol- ogy their theorem says there is an antiequivalence between the category of (locally) compact Hausdorff spaces and (proper, …

Bounding The Number Of Graphs Containing Very Long Induced Paths, Steven Kay Butler Feb 2003

Bounding The Number Of Graphs Containing Very Long Induced Paths, Steven Kay Butler

Theses and Dissertations

Induced graphs are used to describe the structure of a graph, one such type of induced graph that has been studied are long paths.

In this thesis we show a way to represent such graphs in terms of an array with two colors and a labeled graph. Using this representation and the techniques of Polya counting we will then be able to get upper and lower bounds for graphs containing a long path as an induced subgraph.

In particular, if we let P(n,k) be the number of graphs on n+k vertices which contains P_n, a path on n vertices, as …

Resources Related To Mathematics, Art And Nature, Vicki Beitler

Sabbaticals

The purpose of my sabbatical work was to learn about resources related to mathematics and art, nature, music and architecture. These subjects appeal to a wide audience, yet their mathematical connections are often on the periphery of a mathematics student's studies. In this way I planned to increase my knowledge of mathematics but at the same time broaden my understanding of cross-disciplinary subjects.

A Good Start To Numeracy : Effective Numeracy Strategies From Research And Practice In Early Childhood, Brian Doig, Barry Mcrae, Ken Rowe

Student learning processes

The Commonwealth-funded Project Good Start was a longitudinal study of children during their year before school and the first year of school, involving preschool centres and schools across Australia. It considered the questions: how can effective numeracy programs be identified at both year-before-school and the early years of school; and what constitutes evidence of effectiveness. This report provides a review of the international and Australian research literature on numeracy in early childhood that complements the Department of Education, Science and Training’s major review of the numeracy literature undertaken by Deakin University. It is designed to provide early childhood professionals and …

Improving Aboriginal Numeracy: A Book For Education Systems, School Administrators, Teachers And Teacher Educators, Thelma Perso Jan 2003

Improving Aboriginal Numeracy: A Book For Education Systems, School Administrators, Teachers And Teacher Educators, Thelma Perso

Research outputs pre 2011

Aboriginal students have the right to access the same education that is available to non-Aboriginal children in Australian schools. At present, Aboriginal children have access to, the same curriculum that non-Aboriginal students have access to but it may not empower them. This might be for a variety of reasons: their different starting points, learning styles, underlying issues which are impediments to learning, and in particular, their previous experiences may not be understood by their classroom teachers.

D-Log And Formal Flow For Analytic Isomorphisms Of N-Space, David Wright, Wenhua Zhao Jan 2003

D-Log And Formal Flow For Analytic Isomorphisms Of N-Space, David Wright, Wenhua Zhao

Mathematics Faculty Research

Given a formal map of the form terms, we give tree expansion formulas and associated algorithms for the D-Log of and the formal flow . The coefficients that appear in these formulas can be viewed as certain generalizations of the Bernoulli numbers and the Bernoulli polynomials. Moreover, the coefficient polynomials in the formal flow formula coincide with the strict order polynomials in combinatorics for the partially ordered sets induced by trees. Applications of these formulas to the Jacobian Conjecture are discussed.

The Negative Impact Of Middle School Mathematics Achievement On Classical High School, William G. Frost Jan 2003

The Negative Impact Of Middle School Mathematics Achievement On Classical High School, William G. Frost

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ version of high stakes assessment testing that has moved to the forefront of education reform over the past decade. True accountability for students and principals is present only at the high school level because students must pass the English language arts and mathematics sections of Grade 10 MCAS to qualify for a diploma.

Archival MCAS data over 4 years of testing reveals 2 inescapable conclusions. First, regardless of level (Grades 4, 8, and 10 are MCAS benchmark years), students have performed significantly better in English language arts than mathematics, …

Improving Science Education For Middle-School Students By Integrating Mathematics Into The Scientific Method Process, Robert L. Wells Jan 2003

Improving Science Education For Middle-School Students By Integrating Mathematics Into The Scientific Method Process, Robert L. Wells

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to improve student success in science by integrating mathematics into the scientific method process. Students were routinely asked to perform experiments that required mathematical computations in measurement, numeration, geometry, and statistics; however, they were largely unable to perform these calculations because of their inability to apply mathematical concepts outside the mathematics classroom. The mathematics curriculum did not afford the student the opportunity to apply mathematics to real-life situations, nor did the science curriculum consistently apply mathematics to experiments.

The writer developed a series of science experiments that incorporated these four mathematical concepts into earth science …

Wavelet-Based Simulation Of Geological Variables, T. T. Tran Jan 2003

Wavelet-Based Simulation Of Geological Variables, T. T. Tran

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis introduces a number of conditional simulation algorithms using wavelet bases. These make use of two orthogonal wavelet bases, the Haar and the Db2 bases. Firstly, two single-level algorithms are introduced, HSIM: with the Haar basis and DB2SIM with the Db2 basis. HSIM reproduces the histogram and semivariogram model of isotropic samples but not the semivariogrnm model of anisotropic samples. DB2SIM reproduces the histogram and semivariogram model in both the isotropic and anisotropic cases but, because of the conditioning method employed, is not as computationally efficient as we would wish. Because of the limitations of HSIM and Db2SIM two …

Writing Mathematics-A Nut And A Bolt Of Style, Frank A. Farris Sep 2002

Writing Mathematics-A Nut And A Bolt Of Style, Frank A. Farris

Mathematics and Computer Science

As editor of Mathematics Magazine, I see a lot of manuscripts. Some of them are written with a charming sense of style, but many of them leave me thinking that the author's only concern was to set out the mathematics clearly. This is a fine place to start, but the tradition of the Magazine is to offer things that people will enjoy reading, and this requires more than clarity. Let me explain an important step authors can take in order to make their work more attractive.

Uncertainty Assessment For Cfd Using Error Transport Equation, Gusheng Hu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is making extensive use of the power of computational technology, it is also facing a serious problem arising from the so-called numerical uncertainty. The overall uncertainty (or the global error) involved in CFD results can be due to different sources mainly contributed by (i) discretization error (or solution error due to incomplete grid convergence), (ii) iteration convergence error, (iii) grid generation errors (skewness, grid aspect and expansion ratio, coordinate transformation etc.), and (iv) round-off errors. In this study an in-depth discussion concerning these issues is presented with an emphasis on the discretization error in regard …
