On Some Generalized Transforms For Signal Decomposition And Reconstruction., Yumnam Singh Dr. Jan 2005

On Some Generalized Transforms For Signal Decomposition And Reconstruction., Yumnam Singh Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis, we propose two new subband transforms entitled ISITRA and YKSK transforms and their possible applications in image compression and encryption. Both these transforms are developed based on a common model of multiplication known as Bino’s model of multiplication. ISITRA is a convolution based transforms i.e., that both forward and inverse transform of ISITRA is based on convolution as in DWT or 2-channel filter bank. However, it is much more general than the existing DWT or 2-channel filter bank scheme in the sense that it we can get different kinds of filters in addition to the filters specified …

Continued Radicals, Jamie Johnson Jan 2005

Continued Radicals, Jamie Johnson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

If a1, a2, . . . , an are nonnegative real numbers and fj(x) = paj + x, then f1o f2o· · · fn(0) is a nested radical with terms a1, . . . , an. If it exists, the limit as n ! 1 of such an expression is a continued radical. We consider the set of real numbers S(M) representable as an infinite nested radical whose terms a1, a2, . . . are all from a finite set M. We give conditions on the set M for S(M) to be (a) an interval, and (b) homeomorphic to the …

Burnside Factors, Amenability Defects And Transitive Families Of Projections In Factors Of Type Ii(1), Jon P. Bannon Jan 2005

Burnside Factors, Amenability Defects And Transitive Families Of Projections In Factors Of Type Ii(1), Jon P. Bannon

Doctoral Dissertations

We introduce a notion of transitive family of projections in a type II1 factor and prove that there exists (i) a 5 element transitive family in the hyperfinite II1 and (ii) a 12 element free transitive family. We then prove that the group von Neumann algebras of the known infinite free Burnside groups are all type II1 factors. Our investigation of weak-amenability properties of Burnside groups leads us to consider the Connes theory of correspondences. From this investigation we are able to define a new Folner invariant for type II1 factors. We prove a monotonicity result and find a positive …

Nonunital Multiplier Pairs And Remarks On Generalized Group C*-Algebras, Sandra E. Zak Jan 2005

Nonunital Multiplier Pairs And Remarks On Generalized Group C*-Algebras, Sandra E. Zak

Doctoral Dissertations

In the first part of this paper we will consider a generalization of D. Hadwin and E. Nordgren's work on multiplier pairs. Here we will not assume the existence of an identity, but rather just ask for the existence of a bounded approximate identity. Without the assumption of the identity, we find a new result concerning the relationship between the norm closure of the left multiplication operators and the approximate double commutant of the left multiplication operators.

In the second part we will suppose f, g : T→T are continuous functions on the unit circle T and let B (f, …

The Process Of Integration And The Concept Of Integral: How Does Success With Applications And Comprehension Of Underlying Notions Such As Accumulation Relate To Students' Mathematical Fluency, Mariana Montiel

Doctoral Dissertations

At the end of the standard first calculus course, the student is expected to learn the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and to be able to use the integral to produce new functions, or numbers which, they are told, represent the "area under the curve". At the beginning of the standard second calculus course, students are expected to generalize their knowledge, and use the integration process to generate solids of revolution, surface areas, arc length and work, among other applications. Looking at students' success or failure in these endeavors, it was detected that there are marked differences in an aspect that, …

Stable Invariant Subspaces, Reflexivity, And Bmo, Hassan Yousefi Jan 2005

Stable Invariant Subspaces, Reflexivity, And Bmo, Hassan Yousefi

Doctoral Dissertations

In the first part of the thesis we obtain some new results in Hadwin's general version of reflexivity and apply them in the classical cases. We prove that the image of any C*-algebra under any bounded unital homomorphism into B(W) is approximately reflexive, where W is a Banach space. We also introduce two new versions of reflexivity, approximate algebraic reflexivity and asymptotic reflexivity, and study their properties.

In the second part of the thesis we construct a general setting in which functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) and vanishing mean oscillation (VMO) can be studied. In this setting we prove …

Flowers Of Ice- Beauty, Symmetry, And Complexity: A Review Of The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty, John A. Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) Growing up as a child in southern England, my early memories of snow include trudging home from school with my father, gazing at the seemingly enormous snowdrifts that smoothed the hedgerows, fields and bushes, while listening to the soft “scrunch” of the snow under my Wellington boots. In the country, snow stretching as far as I could see was not a particularly uncommon sight. The quietness of the land under a foot of snow seemed eerie. I cannot remember the first time I looked at snowflakes per se; my interests as a small child were primarily in their …

The Effects Of A Project-Based Mathematics Curriculum On Middle School Students' Intended Career Paths Related To Science, Technology, Engineering And Mathematics, Barbara Clanton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is an examination of whether a project-based mathematics curriculum would influence students' intended career paths related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) endeavors; perceived usefulness of mathematics; and perceived competence in doing mathematics. A review of the literature revealed that there are many shortages of professionals in STEM fields. United States women and men are not pursuing STEM endeavors in great numbers and the U.S. relies heavily on international students to fill this gap. The literature revealed that the girls who do not pursue STEM endeavors in great numbers do not perceive mathematics as a useful endeavor …

The Jacobian Conjecture: Ideal Membership Questions And Recent Advances, David Wright Jan 2005

The Jacobian Conjecture: Ideal Membership Questions And Recent Advances, David Wright

Mathematics Faculty Research

The Jacobian conjecture can be reduced to the consideration of polynomial maps F:Cn→Cn of the special form F=X−H, where X is the identity map and H contains only higher order terms (i.e., terms of degree at least 2). In that case, it asserts that if |J(F)|, the Jacobian determinant of F, is identically 1, then F is bijective, with a polynomial inverse. The introduction contains a convenient summary of known reductions to yet more special forms and known partial results for those forms. The reductions are formulated as families of conjectures for each pair (n,d), where n≥2 is the dimension …

Stem Initiatives: Stimulating Students To Improve Science And Mathematics Achievement, Robert Q. Berry Iii, Philip A. Reed, John M. Ritz, Cheng Y. Lin, Steve Hsiung, Wendy Frazier

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The article focuses on how concepts in science, technology education, and mathematics show powerful relationships when it comes to student learning. Learning theorists believe that, through designed learning environments (contexts) and learning with hands-on projects, new knowledge can not only be learned, but learned in such a way that the knowledge can be transferred for other applications. Scholars in the applied sciences (school science, technology, and mathematics) believe that these subjects have transfer among themselves and that engineering activities can establish the contexts to learn these subjects, plus aid in the transfer of knowledge. This collaborative movement is referred to …

Variables That Predict Success In Mathematics For Females In Highereducation: An Analysis Of Quantitative And Qualitative Predictors, Dottie L. King

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Female students in higherEducation do not pursue high-level mathematics courses in the same proportion as males and this creates lessened opportunities for them. This mixed-methods study investigated attitudes as well as achievement factors that encourage or inhibit success for female students in mathematics. Mathematics SAT/ACT scores and high school courses of first-year students at a private women's college in the Midwest were used as achievement data; seven of the Fennema-Sherman scales provided attitudinal data. Multiple regression techniques were used to determine whether attitudinal or achievement variables best predict success and to create a model with the first college-level mathematics grade …

Lessons Learned About Boys’ And Girls’ Mathematical Problem Solving: The Solution Processes, Performance, Linguistic Explanations, Self-Efficacy, And Self-Assessment Of Fifth-Grade Students Of Varying Reading And Mathematics Abilities, Patricia D. Hunsader

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this non-experimental, causal-comparative study was to examine how gender, reading ability, and mathematics ability differentially moderated students’ mathematical problem-solving processes, linguistic explanations of those solution processes, achievement on a mathematical problem-solving test, self-efficacy on a self-reported rating scale, and selfassessment on a self-reported rating scale. The investigation addressed five research questions. First, to what extent are students’ mathematical problemsolving processes related to gender? Second, to what extent is children’s performance in mathematical problem solving related to gender, reading ability, and mathematics ability? Third, to what extent is the quality of students’ linguistic explanations of their problem-solving processes …

Newton, Maclaurin, And The Authority Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner Dec 2004

Newton, Maclaurin, And The Authority Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Sir Isaac Newton revolutionized physics and astronomy in his Principia. How did he do it? Would his method work on any area of inquiry, not only in science, but also about society and religion? We look at how some Newtonians, most notably Colin Maclaurin, combined sophisticated mathematical modeling and empirical data in what has come to be called the "Newtonian Style." We argue that this style was responsible not only for Maclaurin’s scientific success but for his ability to solve problems ranging from taxation to insurance to theology. We show how Maclaurin’s work strengthened the prestige of Newtonianism and …

We extend the lower bound in [15] for the outerplanar crossing number (in other terminologies also called convex, circular and one-page book crossing number) to a more general setting. In this setting we can show a better lower bound for the outerplanar crossing number of hypercubes than the best lower bound for the planar crossing number. We exhibit further sequences of graphs, whose outerplanar crossing number exceeds by a factor of log n the planar crossing number of the graph. We study the circular arrangement problem, as a lower bound for the linear arrangement problem, in a general fashion. We …
