The Experiences Of A Rural Mississippi Mathematics Teacher: A Case Study, John Hamilton Lamb May 2006

The Experiences Of A Rural Mississippi Mathematics Teacher: A Case Study, John Hamilton Lamb

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates my experiences as a rural Mississippi secondary mathematics teacher. The culture surrounding accountability testing and rural education as well as student perceptions of my mathematics instruction and classroom management were investigated. With recent educational legislation such as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, teachers and students are experiencing education differently than teachers and students of the past. Through this basic interpretive case study, I sought to increase the limited research surrounding student perceptions of rural mathematics instruction and accountability testing and to provide a descriptive image of teaching in this rural school. The students, administrators, …

How Have Teachers Affected The Disinterest Towards Mathematics?, Amy Brown May 2006

How Have Teachers Affected The Disinterest Towards Mathematics?, Amy Brown

Senior Honors Projects

In our school system today there is a collective disinterest and lack of enthusiasm towards mathematics as a whole. This apathy is prevalent as early as elementary school and continues through higher education. It is disheartening that so many students avoid mathematics because of their misconception that it is too difficult and has little value in their future. How well prepared are our teachers to deal with this? I began my research by looking at the past perceptions of mathematics and how the reform movement has changed this perspective. I also looked at the changing standards and how the Principles …

Teaching Time Savers: A Recommendation For Recommendations, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

I admit it — I enjoy writing recommendation letters for my students. I like
learning about their hopes and dreams, where they have been and where they want to go. A recommendation letter is an opportunity to remind myself how much my students can grow while they are in college, and how much I have grown as an instructor, advisor, and mentor.

Non-Normality In Scalar Delay Differential Equations, Jacob Nathaniel Stroh Apr 2006

Non-Normality In Scalar Delay Differential Equations, Jacob Nathaniel Stroh

Mathematics and Statistics

Analysis of stability for delay differential equations (DDEs) is a tool in a variety of fields such as nonlinear dynamics in physics, biology, and chemistry, engineering and pure mathematics. Stability analysis is based primarily on the eigenvalues of a discretized system. Situations exist in which practical and numerical results may not match expected stability inferred from such approaches. The reasons and mechanisms for this behavior can be related to the eigenvectors associated with the eigenvalues. When the operator associated to a linear (or linearized) DDE is significantly non-normal, the stability analysis must be adapted as demonstrated here. Example DDEs are …

What Does It Mean To Preservice Mathematics Teachers To Anticipate Student Responses?, Matthew M. Webb Mar 2006

What Does It Mean To Preservice Mathematics Teachers To Anticipate Student Responses?, Matthew M. Webb

Theses and Dissertations

Lesson study is a form of professional development for teachers adopted in recent years from Japan. Introducing lesson study to U.S. teachers and researchers has been the focus of most of the literature on this subject. Much of the literature outlines how lesson study works and describes its essential features. One of the features of lesson study is anticipating student responses, also known as anticipating student thinking. Anticipating student responses is passingly described in lesson study literature. This research was conducted to understand what it means to anticipate student responses for preservice mathematics teachers in a lesson study group. Lesson …

Duan's Fixed Point Theorem: Proof And Generalization, Martin Arkowitz Feb 2006

Duan's Fixed Point Theorem: Proof And Generalization, Martin Arkowitz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Let X be an H-space of the homotopy type of a connected, finite CW-complex, f : X→X any map and pk : X→X the kth power map. Duan proved that pkf : X → X has a fixed point if k ≥ 2. We give a new, short and elementary proof of this. We then use rational homotopy to generalize to spaces X whose rational cohomology is the tensor product of an exterior algebra on odd dimensional generators with the tensor product of truncated polynomial algebras on even dimensional generators. The role of the power map …

Range Of The Fractional Weak Discrepancy Function, Alan Shuchat, Randy Shull, Ann N. Trenk Jan 2006

Range Of The Fractional Weak Discrepancy Function, Alan Shuchat, Randy Shull, Ann N. Trenk

Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this paper we describe the range of values that can be taken by the fractional weak discrepancy of a poset and characterize semiorders in terms of these values. In [6], we defined the fractional weak discrepancy wdF (P) of a poset P=(V,≺) to be the minimum nonnegative k for which there exists a function f:V→R satisfying (1) if a≺b then f(a)+1≤f(b) and (2) if a∥b then |f(a)−f(b)|≤k. This notion builds on previous work on weak discrepancy in [3, 7, 8]. We prove here that the range of values of the function wdF is the set of rational numbers …

Coordinated Effects Of Distal Mutations On Environmentally Coupled Tunneling In Dihydrofolate Reductase, Lin Wang, Nina M. Goodey, Stephen J. Benkovic, Amnon Kohen

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

One of the most intriguing questions in modern enzymology is whether enzyme dynamics evolved to enhance the catalyzed chemical transformation. In this study, dihydrofolate reductase, a small monomeric protein that catalyzes a single C-H-C transfer, is used as a model system to address this question. Experimental and computational studies have proposed a dynamic network that includes two residues remote from the active site (G121 and M42). The current study compares the nature of the H-transfer step of the WT enzyme, two single mutants, and their double mutant. The contribution of quantum mechanical tunneling and enzyme dynamics to the H-transfer step …

An Investigation Of Pre-Service Teachers' And Professional Mathematicians' Perceptions Of Mathematical Proof At The Secondary School Level, David M. Gray Jan 2006

An Investigation Of Pre-Service Teachers' And Professional Mathematicians' Perceptions Of Mathematical Proof At The Secondary School Level, David M. Gray

Doctoral Dissertations

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics [NCTM] states that by the time students graduate high school, they should learn to present "arguments consisting of logically rigorous deductions of conclusions from hypotheses" (NCTM, 2000, p. 56) in "written forms that would be acceptable to professional mathematicians" (NCTM, 2000, p. 58). Research studies indicate, however, that students and teachers have difficulty with many aspects of mathematical proof, including its nature and meaning. In addition, there appears to be a disconnect between school teachers' and university mathematicians' expectations for their respective students regarding mathematical proof. This study examined the perceptions of thirteen …
