Chaos Theory And Military Applications, Judith Crane Apr 2007

Chaos Theory And Military Applications, Judith Crane

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

This paper reviews the fundamentals of Chaos theory, military systems that are Chaotic, Chaos in non-physical systems, Chaos control, and the applications of Chaos theory for the military. This fairly new mathematical concept is still being explored and it is expanding in its applications for the military. Glenn James in his paper Chaos theory: The Essentials for Military Applications, capitalizes the word “chaos” throughout his paper when discussing mathematical chaos. This method will be used throughout this paper as well to distinguish mathematical chaos from social chaos. In order to help understand Chaos theory, the logistic map, a difference equation …

Some Geometrical Aspects Of The Cone Linear Complementarity Problem., Madhur Malik Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Cone Linear Complementarity ProblemLet V be a finite dimensional real inner product space and K be a closed convex cone in V. Given a linear transformation L : V → V and a vector q ∈ V the cone linear complementarity problem or linear complementarity problem over K, denoted as LCP(K, L, q), is to find a vector x ∈ K such thatL(x) + q ∈ K+ and hx, L(x) + qi = 0,where h., .i denotes an inner product on V and K is the dual cone of K defined as:K∗ := {y ∈ V : hx, yi ≥ …

One Problem, Two Contexts, Danielle L. Gigger Jan 2007

One Problem, Two Contexts, Danielle L. Gigger

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a group of students were presented with two mathematically isomorphic problems but in radically different contexts. Analysis of their thinking and reasoning as they worked to solve and explain each problem demonstrates that the thinking and reasoning that emerged in each problem responded to clear purposes that the problems elicited in these students. The first problem was posed in a context that relied on experience and intuition rather than a formal mathematical description. The second problem was posed in a formal, set-theoretic context. While the analysis offered here reveals similarities in the students' final reasoning in the …

Assessing Online Assessments: A Comparison Study Of Math Assessment Tools For Third-Grade Students, Tina Kim Chan

Theses Digitization Project

The study reported here examined the move towards online assessments and addressed the question of whether or not different assessment tools affect student scores and student learning. The research activities covered a three-week period, from June 5, 2006 to June 23, 2006. During this time, seventeen third grade students served as their own control group by taking several math tests online and several math tests with paper and pencil. Results were compared to see if performance on computer-based tests would be more successful than pencil-and-paper tests. A follow-up survey to evaluate and interpret the quantitative results was also used. Findings …

Teaching Time Savers: Is Homework Grading On Your Nerves?, Lisette G. De Pillis, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

You have probably heard it said that we learn mathematics best when we do mathematics, or that mathematics is not a spectator sport. For most of our students, this means that their mathematics courses will involve a fair amount of homework. This homework is often used to evaluate individual student progress, but it can also be used, for example, as a catalyst for discussion, to emphasize a point made in class, and to identify common misunderstandings throughout the class as a whole. There is, however, the matter of grading homework.

A Centre-Stable Manifold For The Focussing Cubic Nls In R 1+3, Marius Beceanu Jan 2007

A Centre-Stable Manifold For The Focussing Cubic Nls In R 1+3, Marius Beceanu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship

Consider the focussing cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in R 3 : iψ t +Δψ=−|ψ| 2 ψ.

It admits special solutions of the form e itα ϕ , whereϕ is a Schwartz function and a positive (ϕ>0 ) solution of −Δϕ+αϕ=ϕ 3 .

The space of all such solutions, together with those obtained from them by rescaling and applying phase and Galilean coordinate changes, called standing waves, is the eight-dimensional manifold that consists of functions of the form e i(v⋅+Γ) ϕ(⋅−y,α) . We prove that any solution starting sufficiently close to a standing wave in the Σ=W 1,2 (R 3 …

Understanding Abstract Algebra Concepts, Anna S. Titova Jan 2007

Understanding Abstract Algebra Concepts, Anna S. Titova

Doctoral Dissertations

This study discusses various theoretical perspectives on abstract concept formation. Students' reasoning about abstract objects is described based on theoretical proposition that abstraction is a shift from abstract to concrete. Existing literature suggested a theoretical framework for the study. The framework describes process of abstraction through its elements: assembling, theoretical generalization into abstract entity, and articulation. The elements of the theoretical framework are identified from students' interpretations of and manipulations with elementary abstract algebra concepts including the concepts of binary operation, identity and inverse element, group, subgroup, cyclic group. To accomplish this, students participating in the abstract algebra class were …

Morita Equivalence For Group -Theoretical Categories, Deepak Naidu Jan 2007

Morita Equivalence For Group -Theoretical Categories, Deepak Naidu

Doctoral Dissertations

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for two pointed categories to be dual to each other with respect to a module category. Whenever the dual of a pointed category with respect to a module category is pointed, we give explicit formulas for the Grothendieck ring and for the associator of the dual. This leads to the definition of categorical Morita equivalence on the set of all finite groups and on the set of all pairs ( G, o), where G is a finite group and o ∈ H3(G, kx). A group-theoretical and cohomological interpretation of this relation is given. As …

Modeling Core Generation And Transport Phenomena Of Microcapsules, Xiaoshuo Wu Jan 2007

Modeling Core Generation And Transport Phenomena Of Microcapsules, Xiaoshuo Wu

Doctoral Dissertations

Microcapsules play an important role in chemical, biomedical, and medical research. Of importance is their potential use as bio-sensors, as microreactors, and for drug delivery. In this dissertation, Computational Fluid Dynamics methodology is used to model the generation of droplets or cores (using alginate and oil) and to determine from the model process parameters needed for generating cores of homogeneous size for the manufacturing of microcapsules. Also, material diffusion through a microcapsule for controlled release is modeled based on finite difference methodology. The model was applied to experimental data on dextran release from microcapsules in order to estimate the diffusion …

German Mathematics Teachers' Subject Content And Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Teresa A Leavitt Jan 2007

German Mathematics Teachers' Subject Content And Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Teresa A Leavitt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

How required teacher knowledge is obtained is debated in today's educational context. This dichotomy in acquisition of teacher knowledge between university training including content and pedagogy versus classroom experiences combined with strong subject background has become particularly important as the U.S. seeks to find key components to increase student achievement and to improve education. International comparisons indicating the U.S. consistently lags behind top-performing countries have spurred such efforts; Review of existing literature exposed differences in what is considered necessary knowledge for effective teaching, and where such knowledge can be developed. Types of knowledge and where such knowledge is acquired are …

Creating Mathematics Performance Assessments That Address Multiple Student Levels, Damon L. Bahr Jan 2007

Creating Mathematics Performance Assessments That Address Multiple Student Levels, Damon L. Bahr

Faculty Publications

In recent times there has been considerable commentary regarding the need to enhance mathematical assessment as evidenced by Numeracy, A Priority for All: Challenges for Australian Schools (2000). This emphasis on assessment is timely because although the mathematical reform movement has produced much-needed improvements in both curriculum and instruction, changes in assessment have not kept pace (Firestone & Schorr. 2004; Morgan, 1998). As Ridgeway (1998, p.2) states, "As an issue of policy, the implementation of standards-based curricula should always be accompanied by the implementation of standards-based assessment. In fact, incremental change in assessment systems will foster concurrent improvement in professional …

A Unifying Field In Logics: Neutrosophic Logic. Neutrosophy, Neutrosophic Set, Neutrosophic Probability And Statistics - 6th Ed., Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

It was a surprise for me when in 1995 I received a manuscript from the mathematician, experimental writer and innovative painter Florentin Smarandache, especially because the treated subject was of philosophy - revealing paradoxes - and logics. He had generalized the fuzzy logic, and introduced two new concepts: a) “neutrosophy” – study of neutralities as an extension of dialectics; b) and its derivative “neutrosophic”, such as “neutrosophic logic”, “neutrosophic set”, “neutrosophic probability”, and “neutrosophic statistics” and thus opening new ways of research in four fields: philosophy, logics, set theory, and probability/statistics. It was known to me his setting up in …

Quantification De La Variabilité Biologique : Impact De La Variation Des Niveaux Ambiants De Contaminants, Ginette Truchon, Robert Tardif, Pierre-Olivier Droz, Philippe Nantel, Ginette Charest-Tardif, Alice De Batz

Torsion-Free Groups And Modules With The Involution Property, Brendan Goldsmith, C. Meehan, S.L. Wallutis

Articles

An Abelian group or module is said to have the involution property if every endomorphism is the sum of two automorphisms, one of which is an involution. We investigate this property for completely decomposable torsion-free Abelian groups and modules over the ring of -adic integers.
