The Relationship Between Attitudes And Achievement In Mathematics Among Fifth Grade Students, Madeleine P. Michelli May 2013

The Relationship Between Attitudes And Achievement In Mathematics Among Fifth Grade Students, Madeleine P. Michelli

Honors Theses

There have been a number of studies investigating how attitudes such as confidence and motivation affect students and their academic achievement. This study was conducted to identify specifically how fifth grade students’ attitudes affect their achievement in mathematics. Gender was studied to determine its effect on attitude and achievement. Furthermore, various types of personality traits were studied including extroversion, conscientiousness, self-control, and intellectual efficiency to determine their effects on achievement. To gather the data a questionnaire including a Likert scale survey and a math test was administered. The results indicated that there is a significant relationship between attitudes toward and …

Circuits, Perfect Matchings And Paths In Graphs, Wenliang Tang May 2013

Circuits, Perfect Matchings And Paths In Graphs, Wenliang Tang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

We primarily consider the problem of finding a family of circuits to cover a bidgeless graph (mainly on cubic graph) with respect to a given weight function defined on the edge set. The first chapter of this thesis is going to cover all basic concepts and notations will be used and a survey of this topic.;In Chapter two, we shall pay our attention to the Strong Circuit Double Cover Conjecture (SCDC Conjecture). This conjecture was verified for some graphs with special structure. As the complement of two factor in cubic graph, the Berge-Fulkersen Conjecture was introduced right after SCDC Conjecture. …

On The Isomorphism Question For Complete Pick Multiplier Algebras, Matt Kerr, John E. Mccarthy, Orr Moshe Shalit May 2013

On The Isomorphism Question For Complete Pick Multiplier Algebras, Matt Kerr, John E. Mccarthy, Orr Moshe Shalit

Mathematics Faculty Research

Every multiplier algebra of an irreducible complete Pick kernel arises as the restriction algebra MV={f∣∣V:f∈Md}, where d is some integer or ∞,Md is the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space H2d , and V is a subvariety of the unit ball. For finite dimensional d it is known that, under mild assumptions, every isomorphism between two such algebras MV and MW is induced by a biholomorphism between W and V. In this paper we consider the converse, and obtain positive results in two directions. The first deals with the case where V is the proper image of a finite Riemann …

The researcher analyzed the data of student scores in rural middle school mathematics' class and teacher characteristics to determine if a relation existed between student achievement and positive teacher-student relationships. The American version of the Questionnaire on …

Actual Vs. Perceived Value Of Players Of The National Basketball Association, Stephen Righini Apr 2013

Actual Vs. Perceived Value Of Players Of The National Basketball Association, Stephen Righini

Honors Projects in Mathematics

Over the past few decades the media has played an increasingly large role in shaping how player effectiveness in the National Basketball Association (NBA) is perceived. Several factors have caused fans, announcers, and even NBA team management to have unintentional bias toward certain players. This study aims to utilize various formulas created by NBA statisticians, called Player Raters, to identify how efficient each NBA player actually is in comparison to the rest of the league. Data from the past 12 seasons was compiled and six Player Raters were used to place values on every NBA player since the 2000-2001 season. …

Time Series Data Mining: A Retail Application Using Sas Enterprise Miner, Daniel Hebert Apr 2013

Time Series Data Mining: A Retail Application Using Sas Enterprise Miner, Daniel Hebert

Honors Projects in Mathematics

Modern technologies have allowed for the amassment of data at a rate never encountered before. Organizations are now able to routinely collect and process massive volumes of data. A plethora of regularly collected information can be ordered using an appropriate time interval. The data would thus be developed into a time series. With such data, analytical techniques can be employed to collect information pertaining to historical trends and seasonality. Time series data mining methodology allows users to identify commonalities between sets of time-ordered data. This technique is supported by a variety of algorithms, notably dynamic time warping (DTW). This mathematical …

The Stock Market Impact Of Bond Rating Changes, Michael Leonard Apr 2013

The Stock Market Impact Of Bond Rating Changes, Michael Leonard

Honors Projects in Mathematics

This paper examines the impact of a downgrade of a company’s credit rating on its stock price in the days surrounding the downgrade. If we consider this downgrade new information, then a negative impact on the company’s stock price would be expected. However, if we assume that rating agencies use information that investors have already accounted for, then there would be no impact. There could also be an impact, at least temporarily, due to the fact that a ratings downgrade is bad news, even if the reasons for the downgrade have already been priced in. To perform this analysis I …

The Fibonacci Sequence: Its History, Significance, And Manifestations In Nature, Anna Grigas

Senior Honors Theses

The discoveries of Leonard of Pisa, better known as Fibonacci, are revolutionary contributions to the mathematical world. His best-known work is the Fibonacci sequence, in which each new number is the sum of the two numbers preceding it. When various operations and manipulations are performed on the numbers of this sequence, beautiful and incredible patterns begin to emerge. The numbers from this sequence are manifested throughout nature in the forms and designs of many plants and animals and have also been reproduced in various manners in art, architecture, and music.

Logics And The Sorites Paradox, Devin Neubrander Apr 2013

Logics And The Sorites Paradox, Devin Neubrander

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

Renderings of the ancient Sorites paradox in classical first-order logic, Lukasiewicz’s three-valued first-order logic, and a Pavelka-style derivation system for Lukasiewicz’s fuzzy first-order logic are derived. It can be seen that only in the last logic mentioned is the conclusion of the Sorites paradox false while the premises are true thus resolving the paradox.

Impacting Student Attitudes Toward Mathematics Through Project-Based Learning: A Multiple Intelligence Based Approach, Andre Wade Apr 2013

Impacting Student Attitudes Toward Mathematics Through Project-Based Learning: A Multiple Intelligence Based Approach, Andre Wade

Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

Reflecting on my first year of teaching, the number one hindrance to my students’ progress in mathematics seemed to be that my students strongly disliked the subject. Therefore in my second year of teaching at a diverse Catholic school in New England, I completed an action research project that implemented project-based learning (PBL) based on Multiple Intelligence (MI) theory into my mathematics classroom. I wanted to to see if the experience would first, impact student attitudes to make students like math more, and second, if PBL would allow students to see mathematics as applicable to the real world. Therefore, this …

Quantitative Approaches To Sustainability Seminars, Rachel Levy Apr 2013

Quantitative Approaches To Sustainability Seminars, Rachel Levy

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

How can mathematicians contribute to education of about sustainability? Mathematicians study climate change, energy-related technologies, models of energy availability, production and consumption, and even the political and social aspects of sustainable legislation and practices. However, at this point, few courses on sustainability can be found in math department offerings. When we consider problems that our current and future students will face, energy sustainability certainly seems important. But how many of these ideas reach our classrooms?

What Can Stem Educators Learn From A Teacher Induction Program? A Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers’ Reflections On Teaching And Learning, Sheryl Mcglamery, Saundra Shillingstad Apr 2013

What Can Stem Educators Learn From A Teacher Induction Program? A Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers’ Reflections On Teaching And Learning, Sheryl Mcglamery, Saundra Shillingstad

Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Research completed to date confirms that beginning science and mathematics teachers face many challenges, and must master numerous areas of teaching skill in order to demonstrate competence in teaching. Most will face the initial year of practice with little or no access to an induction program targeting their content areas (Luft, 2009). Research further suggests that science and math teachers left without critically needed guidance, a comprehensive induction program could provide, often develop practices that do not allow their students to participate in inquiry activities (e.g. labs, simulations, problem solving, research projects ( Luft, Roehrig, & Patterson, 2003). Instead the …

Improving Student Achievement Through Feedback, Jennifer L. Mchlachlan Apr 2013

Improving Student Achievement Through Feedback, Jennifer L. Mchlachlan

Mathematics Graduate Theses

This paper reviews the current research that exists on feedback given to students in an educational setting. Questions examined were what characteristics make feedback effective, what are the effects on student achievement if feedback is available to students in a math classroom and does timing of the feedback given play a role in its effectiveness. Results showed that feedback is effective if it is descriptive, including both strengths and weaknesses. Feedback given in small doses throughout the learning process, so as not to overwhelm students, has also proven effective. The research shows that the effect of feedback on student achievement …

Customer Age As A Predictor Of Contact Volume, Tollan Renner

Honors Theses and Capstones

A two stage modeling approach for modeling customer age as a predictor of contact volume was conducted using a real-world data set of approximately 2,000,000 contacts from a company call center. Two models were constructed in the first stage, one a straightforward regression and the other a series of regressions. One was selected as better performing and scaled up to predict calls received from calls answered. The second stage of the modeling included a day of the week covariate and performed the best of the models created. This model uses age bins as model effects, of which the youngest age …

This paper presents our work in translating the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument (MTEBI) from English to Thai and our resulting initial investigation with 262 Thai pre-service teachers. The MTEBI underwent confirmatory factor analysis indicating two independent scales of Personal Mathematics Teaching Efficacy and Mathematics Teaching Outcome Expectancy (Enochs, Smith, Huinker, 2000). The translation process occurred over several meetings between two US educators and one Thai educator. To check for reliability the instrument was translated into Thai and back translated into English.

90° To 360°, Holly Paronelli Mar 2013

90° To 360°, Holly Paronelli

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

When I hear STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Art I think of Math and value. Even though there is value in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) the value as a whole cannot be fully calculated. Art is too indefinite, to vast, too infinite to be calculated, but aspects of STEM can be. Yet even then what we think we know comes down to interpretation, fact is fact for only a while.

Integrating Manipulatives To Improve Fraction Concepts, Rachel Dunn Mar 2013

Integrating Manipulatives To Improve Fraction Concepts, Rachel Dunn

Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)

Many students are overwhelmed by mathematics because the language is too difficult, the teaching strategies are insufficient or they have lost motivation. With a recent emphasis on meeting the Common Core expectations, using manipulatives to eliminate misconceptions in the mathematical classroom has become even more prevalent. I explored the misconceptions that many students struggle with and provided possible methods of eliminating them at all levels for learning. During this investigation, I studied the effect of manipulatives on students’ understanding of fraction concepts and the students’ conceptions of the unit of reference when working with fraction word problems. I learned that …

Preparing K-10 Teachers Through Common Core For Reasoning And Sense Making, Jonathan Bostic, Gabriel T. Matney

School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

There looms an uncertainty about the Common Core State Standards for mathematics for many teachers. Teachers have indicated that they want professional development (PD) focused on learning about the new standards (Bostic & Matney, in press). This manuscript describes PD programs for K-10 mathematics teachers and offers results from one activity aimed to help teachers unpack the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SFMP). Four major themes arose from interpretive analysis of teachers’ perceptions of the SFMP. These findings suggest (1) the PD supported teachers to make sense of the SFMP and (2) teachers may have misperceptions about the SFMP that require …
