The Fake Mathematical Mindsets Of Preservice Teachers, Carmen M. Latterell
The Fake Mathematical Mindsets Of Preservice Teachers, Carmen M. Latterell
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Many students have a fixed mindset, as do some teachers. Recently I accidentally discovered that most of the preservice elementary teachers in my class were faking their mindset and pretending that they had a growth mindset. This raises a variety of questions, such as, will this follow a fake it until you make it track?
Exploring Commutativity In A Hindi Language Classroom, Kumar Gandharv Mishra
Exploring Commutativity In A Hindi Language Classroom, Kumar Gandharv Mishra
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Commutativity is an important concept in mathematics. However, not much emphasis is given to it in the elementary or secondary school curriculum, as there is a lack of interesting noncommutative examples at this level. Since most examples of binary operations provided deal with numbers, commutativity appears trivial. In this article we offer an interesting example of noncommutativity that is familiar to Indian school children from a different context. Students in India study a chapter based on the joining of vowels in Hindi grammar. This process is analogous to producing commutative as well as noncommutative operations. When we bring in mathematical …

Effect Of Parental Support On Learning Engagement In Mathematics Online Learning Environment: The Mediating Role Of Online Self-Regulated Learning Strategies, Malathi Letchumanan, Sharifah Kartini Said Husain, Ahmad Fauzi Mohd Ayub
Higher Learning Research Communications
This study examines the effects of parental support on learning engagement and the mediating roles of self-regulated learning (SRL) in mathematics online learning environments. A sample of 112 undergraduate students from the mathematics departments of two public universities in Malaysia participated in the study. We analyzed the data using descriptive analysis and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), and the study findings indicate that parental support significantly predicts online self-regulated learning (OSRL). In addition, OSRL is a significant predictor of students’ engagement. The results also suggest that OSRL fully mediates the relationship between parental support and learning engagement. However, …

Mixed Galerkin- Implicit Differences Methods For Solving Couple Nonlinear Parabolic System With Constant Coefficients, Wafaa Abd Ibrahim, Jamil A. Ali Al-Hawasy
Baghdad Science Journal
In this paper, the mixed Galerkin- implicit difference method (MGIFDM) is used to solve a couple of nonlinear systems of parabolic partial differential equations with constant coefficients which are abbreviated by (CNPSCC). At first the weak form of the CNPSCC is formulated and then it is discretized using the proposed method, the method mixes the Galerkin finite element method (GFEM) in space variables with the implicit finite difference method (IFDM) in time variables, so the method was named by MGIFDM. At any discrete time tj the method transforms the CNPSCC into a couple Galerkin nonlinear algebraic system (CGNAS), which is …

A Study Of The Atangana Baleanu Fractional Differential Equation With An Application In Gas Dynamic Problem, Amjad Shaikh, Shashikant Waghule, Dinkar Patil, Kottakkaran Sooppy Nisar
Baghdad Science Journal
This article presents an analytical approximation for the nonlinearity of the fractional order gas dynamics equation in both homogeneous and nonhomogeneous cases, with a particular emphasis on shock fronts. The approach utilizes the fractional differentiation operator proposed by Atangana and Baleanu. By employing this operator, an approximate solution for the fractional order gas dynamic equations in scenarios involving shock fronts is derived. The solution process primarily involves an iterative procedure that leverages the Laplace transform for numerical computations. The use of the Laplace transform minimizes round-off errors, resulting in a solution that is both precise and straightforward to implement. The …

Creation Of Bacteria In Tongue Diagnosis Based On Fractal Methods, S. Pavithra, G. Jayalalitha
Baghdad Science Journal
Bacteria play a vital role in helping with digestion and protecting against harmful infections. However, the Gram-negative bacteria in Tongue will have some disadvantages in the human body. These can be diagnosed by employing the fractal concept. Bacteria's irregular shape and Complex nature can be quantified using fractal dimensions that exhibit self-similarity at different scales. The fractal measurement procedure deliberates the dissimilarity and surface complexity of the tongue-inclusive spot on the tongue. An image of the tongue is analyzed by the HarFa Fractal Method. The Sobel improved Box counting Method is employed to enumerate the outgrowth of Bacteria in Tongue. …
Solving Hierarchical Variational Inequality For Almost Mean Nonexpansive Mappings, Noor Saddam Taresh, Salwa Salman Abed
Solving Hierarchical Variational Inequality For Almost Mean Nonexpansive Mappings, Noor Saddam Taresh, Salwa Salman Abed
Baghdad Science Journal
A clear common method in solving some types of nonlinear problems is to exchange the original problem with a collection of regularized problems and all these regularized problems have exactly one solution. A particular solution of the original problem will be obtained as a limit of these unique solutions of the regularized problems. This idea is used to provide a method for the hierarchical fixed point approach to solving variational inequality problems (VIPs). In this work, we intend to study two new iterative schemes by examining their strong convergence to a common fixed point for mappings defined for a nonempty …

Making More “Math People”: Increasing The Accessibility Of High-Level Math Classes Through Detracking, Aidan Clements
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
One of the most often maligned subjects, mathematics courses are typically strictly tracked by skill level. This project attempts to create more ‘math people’ by designing a curriculum to answer the question: How can differentiation, in-class grouping, and detracking be used to increase the accessibility of high-level math classes? Drawing from a personal narrative, this project reviews literature on the benefits and drawbacks of tracking systems, differentiation, student outcomes, and mathematical mindsets, drawing heavily on work by Jo Boaler (2022). The curriculum is designed with both Understanding by Design and Standards Based Grading framework, and also leverages the flipped classroom …

Common Fixed Points Results For Three Mappings Under Generalized Contraction Of Suzuki-Type In Ƀ-Metric Spaces With Application, Surjeet Singh Chauhan Gonder, Manju Devi, Manish Jain, Mohammad Sajid
Baghdad Science Journal
Suzuki used a brilliant strategy in his seminal publications to expand the Banach contraction theorem (BCT). This has undergone numerous intriguing generalizations and extensions during the past few decades and led to a new trend of coincidence and fixed points for countless Suzuki-type contractive and non-expansive maps in the various spaces. In this article, in the setup of ƀ-metric spaces, the aim is to produce a common fixed point of three mappings subjected to a generalized contraction of the Suzuki type. The present work generalizes well- known results of Suzuki, Chandra et al., Roshan et al. and several other results …

A Two-Phase Service Access Beside Retrial Queues, Orbit Mechanism, Working Vacation Policies For Single Server Environments, Bharathy S, M.C. Saravanarajan
Baghdad Science Journal
This paper analyzes the M/G (P1, P2)/1 queue using a single server that provides essential services in both the first phase (FPS) and the second phase (SPS). It was assumed that the server undertakes unreliability due to starting failure (SF) during the beginning of the first phase with probability (α) or service begins by the idle server successfully with probability (1-α) for the arriving or retrial customer. Then immediately took the failed server for repair and launched the customer into orbit. Also, the server operates at varying rates instead of fully ceasing service during its vacation. …
Inverse Problem Of Class Of Delay Differential Equations And Fast Estimation Of Parameters, Ibrahim Makki Khalil, Jehan Mohammed Khudhir
Inverse Problem Of Class Of Delay Differential Equations And Fast Estimation Of Parameters, Ibrahim Makki Khalil, Jehan Mohammed Khudhir
Baghdad Science Journal
This article introduces an integral representation formula to solve delay nonlinear ordinary differential equations (DDEs) as an improvment to the method proposed by Tyukin I, et al. of solving a class of ordinary differential equations. The integral formula depends on the parameters of the systems explicitly as nonlinear parameterized computable functions. It features both linear and nonlinear equations and show an effective form for estimating unknown parameters. Solutions of DDEs are represented as sums of computable integrals which are implicitly dependent on the initial condition and the unknown parameters. This allows invoking parallel computational streams using Matlab tools of sums …

Numerical Solution Of Distributed Order Fractional Differential Equations Using Spectral Mittag-Leffler Weight Function Based On Chelyshkov Polynomials, Abdulrazzaq T. Abed, Ekhlass S. Al-Rawi
Baghdad Science Journal
In many studies, spectral methods based on one of the orthogonal polynomials and weighted residual methods (WRMs) have been used to convert the distributed-order fractional differential equation (DOFDEs) into a system of linear or nonlinear algebraic equations, and then solve this system to obtain the approximate solution. In this paper, a numerical method is presented for solving DOFDEs. The approximate solution is imposed as an orthogonal Chelyshkov polynomial with unknown coefficients. The required coefficients are obtained using WRMs, which transform the DOFDEs into a system of algebraic coefficients. The Mittag-Leffler function is proposed as a suitable weight function. The method …

Mostly Oscillation For A System Of Half Linear Neutral Differential Equations Of The Second Order With Several Arguments, Noor Abdulamer Abdulkarem, Taghreed Hussein Abed, Farah Abdulameer Abdulkareem, Hussain Ali Mohamad
Baghdad Science Journal
This paper studies the oscillation properties and asymptotic behavior of all solutions of the 2×2 system of second-order half-linear neutral differential equations. Four results are obtained in this research. The first and second results are auxiliary results while the third and fourth results are main results. All possible cases of non-oscillating bounded solutions for this system are estimated and analyzed. It is noted that the parameters that affect the volatility of the solutions are Qi,Ri on the one hand and r1 and r2 on the other hand. For this purpose, and through investigation, it is shown that there are only …
The Role Of Fear And Predator Dependent Refuge On A Stage Structure Prey-Predator System, Ghaith Jassim Abdulsada, Hiba Abdullah Ibrahim
The Role Of Fear And Predator Dependent Refuge On A Stage Structure Prey-Predator System, Ghaith Jassim Abdulsada, Hiba Abdullah Ibrahim
Baghdad Science Journal
The present paper investigates the role of fear and predator dependent refuge in the prey-predator system. The system describes the interaction between prey and a stage structure of predator that incorporates Holling II functional response. The predator splits into two compartments immature (juvenile) and mature (adult). The mature predators can hunt and reproduce but this capability is not found in the immature predators, the immature depend on their parents. The growth rate of prey decreases due to the existence of mature predators. The existence, uniqueness, and boundedness of the solution of the system are investigated. Three equilibrium points of the …

Combining The Least-Squares Method With Touchard Polynomials For Solving Mixed Integro-Differential Equation, Hameeda O. Al-Humedi, Zahraa Adnan Jameel
Baghdad Science Journal
Using the well-known least-squares weighted residual method (LSM) in coupling with various degrees of Touchard polynomials (TPs), found the numerical solutions of Volterra–Fredholm integro-differential equations (VFIDEs) and mixed Volterra–Fredholm integro-differential equations (MIDEs) of the second kind. There exist many approaches that have evaluated the approximate solution of the integro-differential equations (VFIDEs (MIDEs)) like the Adomian decomposition method and modified Adomian decomposition method, Homotopy analysis method, Taylor polynomials, power series expansion and cubic Legendre spline collocation method. In this work, we presented a method based on combining LSM with TPs is an essential component of the suggested approach. By implementing such …
Machine Learning: Neural Networking With Relu And Optimization, Aidan Redmond Brownell
Machine Learning: Neural Networking With Relu And Optimization, Aidan Redmond Brownell
Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals
At its core, learning is an algorithmic process: it begins with input data, undergoes a series of transformations or computations, and yields an output intended to solve a specific task. This output is then compared against a target or desired result, and the internal mechanisms are updated based on how well the output aligns with expectations. While this feedback-driven process occurs almost effortlessly in humans, it is a far more structured, deliberate, and computationally intensive undertaking for machines.
Basic Theory And Implementations Of Quantum Error Correction, Derek Rodriguez
Basic Theory And Implementations Of Quantum Error Correction, Derek Rodriguez
Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals
The introduction of quantum computing has presented algorithmic solutions to computationally difficult challenges that are far more efficient than those of classical computers. These algorithms leverage the properties of quantum mechanics to manipulate the quantum properties of subatomic particles, requiring immense precision and stability. Current quantum hardware, however, is too noisy and introduces too many errors for these algorithms to be useful in practice, necessitating the use of error correction algorithms. This field survey seeks to introduce various principles of quantum mechanics relevant to quantum computing and quantum error correction (QEC), detail the implementation and motivations of a basic QEC …
Some Results In Thermodynamic Formalism, C. Evans Hedges
Some Results In Thermodynamic Formalism, C. Evans Hedges
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates several key questions at the intersection of dynamical systems, computability theory, and thermodynamic formalism. In the symbolic setting, we establish novel results regarding the statistical properties of equilibrium states, deriving bounds on probabilities of configurations and relating these bounds to the Gibbs property through the homoclinic relation. Additionally, we examine the computability of thermodynamic quantities such as pressure, ground state energy, and residual entropy. We show that topological pressure is computable from above for general subshifts and computable for strongly irreducible shifts, with similar results extending to ground state energy and residual entropy.
Extending beyond subshifts, we …

Mathematical Modeling Contest: Predicting Olympic Game Medals, Alex S. Oathout, Conner B. Dooley, Lucas R. Pinard
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
The Olympic Games constitute an international remembrance of sports excellence and peace in which winning medals constitutes a matter of great personal and national significance to athletes and nations. A forecasting of future medal outcomes has developed into a large application of sports analytics, but one with an elusive challenge inherent in varying performer performance, variable event rosters, and external factors like coach and home-based support. We were tasked with developing a model that could predict the top seven countries medal totals for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. While there are limitations to each model, collectively they represent …
Exploring The Figured Worlds And Identity Of Religious Women In Mathematics-Related Majors, Rachel K. Reynolds
Exploring The Figured Worlds And Identity Of Religious Women In Mathematics-Related Majors, Rachel K. Reynolds
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis investigates how religious women in mathematics construct and navigate their identities within the intersecting figured worlds of gender, religion, and mathematics. Drawing on Holland et al.’s (1998) theory of figured worlds and informed by identity theory, this study examines how these women experience, negotiate, and position their identities within these figured worlds. Through interviews with women who are simultaneously committed to religious life and mathematical scholarship, the research reveals that rather than perceiving conflict between these domains, participants often find points of integration and mutual reinforcement. Their narratives illuminate how identity is shaped through cultural contexts, institutional expectations, …
Evaluating The Gomath! Curriculum For Supporting Middle School Students' Mathematics Learning, Janet J. Muckerheide
Evaluating The Gomath! Curriculum For Supporting Middle School Students' Mathematics Learning, Janet J. Muckerheide
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study was that the GoMath! curriculum implemented in 2016 by St. Anne Middle School’s (a pseudonym) administration to support Grades 6-8 student mathematics learning had not been evaluated to determine its effectiveness. Guided by Stufflebeam’s context, input, process, and product (CIPP) evaluation model, the purpose of this project study was to evaluate if the GoMath! curriculum was effective in supporting Grades 6-8 students’ mathematics learning. This program evaluation assessed the curriculum across four CIPP dimensions: context (alignment with standards), input (teacher support and professional development [PD]), process (student engagement), and product (academic outcomes). Document analysis …

Agent-Based Modeling: Introduction And Actuarial Applications, Rick Gorvett
Agent-Based Modeling: Introduction And Actuarial Applications, Rick Gorvett
Mathematics and Economics Faculty Working Papers
Agent-based modeling (ABM) has become an important and valued approach to modeling complex systems. In this paper, I advocate for actuaries to recognize the complex systems-nature of socioeconomic and risk processes and for ABM models to become a regular resource in our actuarial toolkits. These models allow for the observation of potential macro-behavior emerging from the underlying agent-level micro-activity and characteristics. Therefore, ABM models can provide significant insight into the quantification of risk and the identification of optimal strategies. This paper is an introduction and guide to ABM models, and it includes several case studies to illustrate their utility.
