How Discourse And Collaboration Can Be Used In Mathematics Classrooms To Promote Engagement And Learning, Emily Elsner
How Discourse And Collaboration Can Be Used In Mathematics Classrooms To Promote Engagement And Learning, Emily Elsner
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Educators are always looking for ways to promote engagement and achievement for their students. One thing secondary mathematics teachers can do to encourage engagement and achievement is to have students collaborate with each other on group-worthy tasks and engage in mathematical conversations and discourse. Chapter one of this Capstone gives background information as to why this work is important to the author and the author’s personal experiences with collaboration and discourse in mathematics. In chapter two, lots of research and literature is reviewed on the topics of mathematical mindsets, discourse, and collaboration. This chapter gives teachers ways to have students …
The Relationship Between Mindset And Motivation In An Alternative School Mathematics Classroom, Jo Ellen Dowdy
The Relationship Between Mindset And Motivation In An Alternative School Mathematics Classroom, Jo Ellen Dowdy
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this action research study was to determine the impact of a Khan Academy growth mindset lesson plan on the motivation of at-risk ninth grade students in a mathematics classroom. Data were collected for quantitative analysis of students’ self- reporting of perceptions pertaining to mindset beliefs before and after a mindset intervention and perceptions about motivation in the mathematics classroom. Analysis revealed there was no relationship between mindset and motivation. A minimal decrease in fixed mathematical mindset was determined after a Khan Academy mindset intervention. Increases were found in students’ beliefs in the importance of math, the usefulness …
The Impact Of Intelligent Tutoring Software On Geometry Students, Simela Oueini
The Impact Of Intelligent Tutoring Software On Geometry Students, Simela Oueini
Theses and Dissertations
This purpose of this paper is to deepen the understanding for a problem of practice in the mathematics educators’ classroom of low retention of information thus leading to poor mathematics achievement. The identification of the problem of practice led to a development of a research focus examining the effects of using intelligent tutoring software in the mathematics classroom and the impact it has on mathematics achievement, student motivation as it relates to self-efficacy, student engagement and attitudes towards mathematics. Using a convergent mixed methods approach (Creswell, 2012), this paper elaborates on the research questions addressing “What effects does the integration …
Beneficial Or Not: Flipped Learning In An Elementary Mathematics Classroom, Nicole Jackson
Beneficial Or Not: Flipped Learning In An Elementary Mathematics Classroom, Nicole Jackson
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The Flipped Classroom is becoming a more frequently used instructional strategy in many secondary and collegiate classrooms. However, there are few studies done in elementary classroom settings that have implemented the flipped classroom approach to instruction. Research suggests that flipped classes have a positive impact on student learning and assessment outcomes. This study examined the impact of flipped classroom on second grade students' mathematics achievement. The study used a two group, quasi-experimental, pre-test/ post-test design. 46 second grade students in two classes of 23; one control- traditional instruction and one experimental- flipped classroom instruction, were engaged in a four-week intervention. …
The Impact Of Co-Teaching On Mathematics Achievement Of Middle School General Education Students, Jarrod Bingham
The Impact Of Co-Teaching On Mathematics Achievement Of Middle School General Education Students, Jarrod Bingham
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
To accommodate the presence of special education students in general education classrooms, many schools have implemented collaborative teaching or co-teaching, a model in which two or more teachers share responsibility for a group of students. While myriad research has demonstrated that this model benefits special education students, very little researchers have examined the effect of co-teaching upon the general education student, who often outnumber the special education students. The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to investigate co-teaching’s impact upon the mathematic achievement of general education students. The independent variable in this study was students’ placement into either a) …

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
This study aims to analyze the problem solving abilities and beliefs of prospective teachers in solving problem solving problems. The type of research used in this study is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Based on this research, it is known that students with different abilities can do problem solving procedures, ranging from understanding problems, planning, carrying out problem solving and checking again but the results are different in each ability. Students' confidence in solving problem solving problems is relatively the same for all levels of ability, namely they believe that solving problems solving problems takes a long time, except …

Chronic inflammation has been recognized as a risk factor for the development and maintenance of malignant disease. Cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), oncostatin M (OSM), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) promote the development of both acute and chronic inflammation while promoting in vitro metrics of breast cancer metastasis. However, anti-IL-6 and anti-IL-1β therapeutics have not yielded significant results against solid tumors in clinical trials. Here we show that these three cytokines are interrelated in expression. Using the Curtis TCGA™ dataset, we have determined that there is a correlation between expression levels of OSM, IL-6, and IL-1β and reduced breast cancer patient …

The Mathematical Imagination: On The Origins And Promise Of Critical Theory, Matthew Handelman
The Mathematical Imagination: On The Origins And Promise Of Critical Theory, Matthew Handelman
Philosophy & Theory
This book offers an archeology of the undeveloped potential of mathematics for critical theory. As Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno first conceived of the critical project in the 1930s, critical theory steadfastly opposed the mathematization of thought. Mathematics flattened thought into a dangerous positivism that led reason to the barbarism of World War II. The Mathematical Imagination challenges this narrative, showing how for other German-Jewish thinkers, such as Gershom Scholem, Franz Rosenzweig, and Siegfried Kracauer, mathematics offered metaphors to negotiate the crises of modernity during the Weimar Republic. Influential theories of poetry, messianism, and cultural critique, Handelman shows, borrowed …

The Standard Model of particle physics has accomplished a great deal including the discovery of Higgs boson in 2012. However, since the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model has not been successful so far, some physicists are asking what alternative deeper theory could be beyond the Standard Model? This article discusses the relationship between mathematics and physical reality and explores the ways to go from Big Science to “Deep Science”.
