Les Coûts Du Mariage—Les Transactions Matrimoniales Dans Le Monde En Développement, Sajeda Amin, Ashish Bajracharya

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Costs Of Marriage—Marriage Transactions In The Developing World, Sajeda Amin, Ashish Bajracharya

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Over the past two decades the Population Council has amassed a wealth of information on the causes and correlates of child marriage and documented its adverse effects on the well-being of women and girls. Council research also underscores the importance of rituals and practices of marriage exchange around the globe and documents the considerable variation in these practices. Promoting Healthy, Safe, and Productive Transitions to Adulthood Brief No. 35 synthesizes some broad themes that have emerged from research on …

The Marriage Proposal In The Nineteenth-Century British Novel, Kimberly Ann Broughton Jan 2011

The Marriage Proposal In The Nineteenth-Century British Novel, Kimberly Ann Broughton

All ETDs from UAB

The proposal scene, as utilized by Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, and Charles Dickens, is a volatile and instrumental moment in the course of the marriage plot. Entering the marriage conversation through the narrow window of the proposal scene provides a new understanding of the nineteenth-century British author's working commentary on marriage. In the nineteenth-century British novel, the marriage proposal becomes a finite moment that the author uses to encapsulate a couple's central challenge and/or crystallize one of the novel's prevailing tensions. Total bliss and contentment rarely appear in the proposal scene; in fact, more often than not, the proposal uncovers …

Not Yet Married: The Implications Of Meanings Of Marriage On Youths In Singapore, Paulin T. Straughan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Marriage is a social construct that takes on different meanings as societies develop and mature. To understand why people get married, it is important that we understand what marriage means. This paper will discuss the social transformation of marriage in Asia using Singapore as a case study. To examine two demographic trends- delayed marriage, and the increasing proportion of people who remain single - this discourse also explores the constraints imposed by contradictions between traditional norms and modern expectations. In the midst of these ideological challenges, there are important implications for the practice of marriage among younger Singaporeans. We see …

A Spouse By Any Other Name, Deborah J. Anthony Nov 2010

A Spouse By Any Other Name, Deborah J. Anthony

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This article will investigate current state laws regarding the change of a husband’s name to his wife’s upon marriage. Given that tradition, and often law itself, discourage that practice, the lingering gendered norms that perpetuate the historical tradition will be explored. Components of this article will include a brief historical analysis of the origin of surnames and the law as it has developed on that issue, including an examination of the place of tradition in the law both empirically and normatively. A discussion of the psychological importance of names in the identities of men versus women will be addressed, as …

Sex Ratios, Divorce Laws And The Marriage Market, Brishti Guha Nov 2010

Sex Ratios, Divorce Laws And The Marriage Market, Brishti Guha

Research Collection School Of Economics

We show how an interaction between the skewness of the sex ratio and the jump in divorce rates after a liberalization in divorce laws can obtain in a model of marriage market matching with non-transferable utility. This model is partly motivated by a significant cross-country correlation between these two variables. We also find that men’s hopes or fears about women’s marriage market odds are self-confirming under mutual consent, resulting in multiple equilibria. The multiplicity vanishes with a more skewed sex ratio or a liberalization of divorce laws. Our work sheds some light on the possible implications of divorce liberalization and …

Not Playing House The Way Mom And Dad Do : Same-Sex Commitment Without Marriage : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Amanda Gail Sommers

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory study reveals the narratives of long-term, committed same-sex couples living in the Bay area of California, who decided not to marry in 2008 when it was temporarily legal. Thirteen participants were interviewed and their responses were transcribed and analyzed. They were asked to explain personal, social, and political influences on their perspectives on marriage. They were also asked to define commitment and the commitment markers used in their relationships. Lastly, they were questioned about their relationship with the current marriage equality movement. Findings revealed that participants refrained from marrying due to negative associations they have developed toward the …

Age Differences In Marriage: Exploring Predictors Of Marital Quality In Husband-Older, Wife-Older, And Same-Age Marriages, Brandan E. Wheeler Jul 2010

Age Differences In Marriage: Exploring Predictors Of Marital Quality In Husband-Older, Wife-Older, And Same-Age Marriages, Brandan E. Wheeler

Theses and Dissertations

Using data from a nationally representative sample of 723 married adults, this study explored the association of age differences between spouses at the time of marriage on various aspects of marital quality years into the marriage. Four groups (full sample, husband-older, wife-older, and same-age marriages) were compared to see how marital quality was affected by age difference and several other moderating variables. Spousal interactions increased among wife-older marriages, but not among the other groups. An increased level of husband participation in household labor was linked with an increase in marital happiness and a decrease in marital problems for wife-older marriages. …

Beyond Employment And Income: The Association Between Young Adults’ Finances And Marital Timing, Jeffrey P. Dew, Joseph Price Jul 2010

Beyond Employment And Income: The Association Between Young Adults’ Finances And Marital Timing, Jeffrey P. Dew, Joseph Price

Faculty Publications

This study tested an extension of the theory of marital timing (Oppenheimer, Am J Sociol 94:563–591, 1988) by assessing whether visible and less visible financial assets and debt mediated the relationship between employment and the likelihood of marriage. We conducted these prospective, longitudinal analyses using a sample of 1,522 never-married young adults from the National Survey of Families and Households. For participants who were not cohabiting at Wave 1, financial issues such as car values predicted marriage but did not mediate the relationship between work hours, occupational prestige, and the likelihood of marriage. For cohabiting participants, employment factors were the …

Emotional Intimacy, Coparenting, And Family Work: A Latent Class Growth Analysis, Adam Michael Galovan Jul 2010

Emotional Intimacy, Coparenting, And Family Work: A Latent Class Growth Analysis, Adam Michael Galovan

Theses and Dissertations

From a family systems theoretical view, this paper uses both variable-oriented and person-oriented research approaches to examine parental marriage as a dynamic, interdependent system, and extends the literature by examining parental marriage across a 15 year time span. Employing latent growth curve analysis of 490 mother-father dyads from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, this study considers multiple aspects of the relationship husbands and wives have together as spouses (emotional intimacy), parents (ideas about discipline and a child-centered vs. adult-centered orientation to childrearing), coparents (agreement regarding parenting beliefs and discipline), and household managers (agreement on the …

The (Mis)Categorization Of Sex In Anglo-American Cases Of Transsexual Marriage, John Parsi Jun 2010

The (Mis)Categorization Of Sex In Anglo-American Cases Of Transsexual Marriage, John Parsi

Michigan Law Review

The United States' promise to establish equality for all has been challenged by post-operative transsexuals seeking recognition in their acquired sex. The birth certificate is the legal gateway to changing other legal documents; but the process for changing the birth certificate varies widely from state to state. This lack of national uniformity makes post-operative transsexuals' recognition of their acquired sex complicated at best and impossible at worst. This Note details the legal progression from non-recognition to recognition of post-operative transsexuals' acquired sex in the United Kingdom and through the European Court of Human Rights. The Note goes on to explore …

The Relationship Between Individualistic Attitudes And Attitudes Towards Traditional Marriage In Contemporary American Society, Mary Sarah Harper Apr 2010

The Relationship Between Individualistic Attitudes And Attitudes Towards Traditional Marriage In Contemporary American Society, Mary Sarah Harper

Social Work Theses

This report examines attitudes of a sample of 100 individuals from the ‘marriage-eligible population’ regarding the Institution of Marriage in relation to the rising prevalence of Individualistic attitudes in contemporary American society. This study found the rise of individualistic attitudes to have a statistically significant positive correlation to the rise in negative attitudes towards traditional marriage. It is argued in this study that the increase in individualistic attitudes is the primary contributing factor to the three trends of marital decline; the increasing divorce rate, the decreasing marriage rate, and the increasing number of alternatives to traditional marriage. This study attempts …

Social Support, Problem Solving, And The Longitudinal Course Of Newlywed Marriage, Kieran T. Sullivan, Lauri A. Pasch, Matthew D. Johnson, Thomas N. Bradbury Apr 2010

Social Support, Problem Solving, And The Longitudinal Course Of Newlywed Marriage, Kieran T. Sullivan, Lauri A. Pasch, Matthew D. Johnson, Thomas N. Bradbury

Psychology

Married couples (N = 172) were observed as newlyweds and again one year later while engaging in 2 problem-solving and 2 personal support discussions. Microanalytic coding of these conversations was used to examine associations between problem-solving and social support behaviors over one year and their relative contributions to 10-year trajectories of self-reported relationship satisfaction and dissolution. Results demonstrated that initially lower levels of positive support behaviors and higher levels of negative support behaviors predicted 1-year increases in negative emotion displayed during problem-solving conversations. Emotions coded from the initial problem-solving conversations did not predict 1-year changes in social support behaviors. Controlling …

Same-Sex Equality And Religious Freedom, Ira C. Lupu, Robert W. Tuttle Jan 2010

Same-Sex Equality And Religious Freedom, Ira C. Lupu, Robert W. Tuttle

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

In the spring of 2009, the legislatures of Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont became the first in the United States to enact laws recognizing the legality of same-sex civil marriage. The legislation in all four states included provisions designed to protect the freedom of clergy and religious communities that do not want to recognize same-sex marriage. The legislation in several of the states also included provisions designed to insulate religious organizations from obligations that might arise from the legalization of same-sex marriagefor example, with respect to adoption or the provision of housing to married couples. Despite academic and political …

Why Accommodate? Reflections On The Gay Marriage Culture Wars, Maggie Gallagher Jan 2010

Why Accommodate? Reflections On The Gay Marriage Culture Wars, Maggie Gallagher

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

If same-sex marriage is a basic right, then why accommodate opposing views? This Article proposes four potential types of reasons why citizens, legislators, and/or judges who endorse gay marriage should consider accommodating those with opposing views on marriage: practical, civic, moral sympathy, and principle. It argues that the most urgent need is to develop the argument arguments from civic good and moral sympathy, such as those which have undergirded conscience protections for abortion. The Article further explains why people from traditional faith communities reasonably fear that same-sex marriage will be used as a weapon to repress religious and moral dissent and …

In The Company Of Detective Ladies Gendered Modes Of Detection In The Works Of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, And Alexander Mccall, Alexandra Alden Charles Jan 2010

In The Company Of Detective Ladies Gendered Modes Of Detection In The Works Of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, And Alexander Mccall, Alexandra Alden Charles

Theses & ETDs

The rational male detective, exemplified in Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes, is frequently portrayed as a socially unfixed, unemotional, loner figure. He protects, but is divorced from domestic realm. Because female characters cannot disengage from their domestic identity in the same way in which male characters can, female detectives have to incorporate two seemingly conflicting identities. In order to negotiate the issues that result from their gendernamely, assumed differences both in types of knowledge, and in the construction of personal and professional identitiesfemale detectives employ different modes of detection. Miss Marple, Agatha Christies spinster detective, gleans information from town …

Liberty V. Equality; Equality V. Liberty, Marc D. Stern Jan 2010

Liberty V. Equality; Equality V. Liberty, Marc D. Stern

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

The principle that religious accommodation is necessary should not be debatable. Recognition of same-sex marriage, whatever technical form legal arguments made on its behalf take, exemplifies a "live and let live" policy. That same policy should apply equally to religious believers who oppose same-sex marriagethey should not be required to act directly in opposition to their religious beliefs, that is, in ways that appear to confer their personal blessing on such marriages. That recognizing same-sex marriage will, for the while, put many people with "traditional" religious beliefs in a vise between their religious commitments and the law is really not …

Transition To Marriage And Parenthood Among Youth In India, International Institute For Population Sciences (Iips), Population Council Jan 2010

Transition To Marriage And Parenthood Among Youth In India, International Institute For Population Sciences (Iips), Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This Population Council policy brief documents the magnitude of early marriage and early childbearing in India and sheds light on young people’s marriage-related planning and preparedness for married life, and the nature of married life. While child marriage is particularly evident among young women, it is notable that significant proportions of young men too have married below the legal minimum age at marriage for males. Findings call for multi-pronged efforts to eliminate the practice of early marriage among young men and women, and to support newlywed young women. Ensuring that these programs reach young people and the influential adults in …

Married With Children: The Influence Of Parental Status And Gender On Ambulatory Blood Pressure, Wendy C. Birmingham, Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Adam M. Howard, Dustin Thoman

Faculty Publications

Background Although there is substantial evidence that social relationships and marriage may influence both psychological and physical health, little is known about the influence of children. Purpose This study examined the competing predictions regarding the directional influence of parental status and its interaction with gender—given that mothers are typically disproportionately more responsible for everyday care of children—on cardiovascular functioning. Method We examined ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) over 24 hours among 198 married males and females. Results Couples without children had significantly higher ambulatory SBP and DBP than those with children. Moreover, we found a significant interaction between parental status and …
