Study Of Human Hand-Eye Coordination Using Machine Learning Techniques In A Virtual Reality Setup, Kamran Binaee

Theses

Theories of visually guided action are characterized as closed-loop control in the presence of reliable sources of visual information, and predictive control to compensate for visuomotor delay and temporary occlusion. However, prediction is not well understood. To investigate, a series of studies was designed to characterize the role of predictive strategies in humans as they perform visually guided actions, and to guide the development of computational models that capture these strategies. During data collection, subjects were immersed in a virtual reality (VR) system and were tasked with using a paddle to intercept a virtual ball. To force subjects into a …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Internet of Things (IoT) applications generate vast amounts of real-time data. Temporal analysis of these data series to discover behavioural patterns may lead to qualified knowledge affecting a broad range of industries. Hence, the use of machine learning (ML) algorithms over IoT data has the potential to improve safety, economy, and performance in critical processes. However, creating ML workflows at scale is a challenging task that depends upon both production and specialized skills. Such tasks require investigation, understanding, selection, and implementation of specific ML workflows, which often lead to bottlenecks, production issues, and code management complexity and even then may …

Machine Learning To Support An Interactive Theorem Prover, Salman Haider, Andy Le, Echo Wu, Brian T. Howard Oct 2019

Machine Learning To Support An Interactive Theorem Prover, Salman Haider, Andy Le, Echo Wu, Brian T. Howard

Annual Student Research Poster Session

An Interactive Theorem Prover (ITP) is a computer program that can assist a human in creating a proof of a mathematical theorem or the correctness of a piece of software. At each step in the proof, the human has the computer apply a chosen "tactic" to attempt to make progress toward the goal. We are exploring the possibility of using Machine Learning (ML) to assist in this tactic selection. Building on recent work at UC Berkeley and Princeton, where they adapted the Coq ITP so that it could interface with ML libraries via the Python scripting language, we have been …

Adaptive Feature Engineering Modeling For Ultrasound Image Classification For Decision Support, Hatwib Mugasa Oct 2019

Adaptive Feature Engineering Modeling For Ultrasound Image Classification For Decision Support, Hatwib Mugasa

Doctoral Dissertations

Ultrasonography is considered a relatively safe option for the diagnosis of benign and malignant cancer lesions due to the low-energy sound waves used. However, the visual interpretation of the ultrasound images is time-consuming and usually has high false alerts due to speckle noise. Improved methods of collection image-based data have been proposed to reduce noise in the images; however, this has proved not to solve the problem due to the complex nature of images and the exponential growth of biomedical datasets. Secondly, the target class in real-world biomedical datasets, that is the focus of interest of a biopsy, is usually …

Machine Learning Based Ultra High Carbon Steel Image Segmentation, Sumith Kuttiyil Suresh Oct 2019

Machine Learning Based Ultra High Carbon Steel Image Segmentation, Sumith Kuttiyil Suresh

Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical and structural properties of ultra-high carbon steel are determined by their microstructures composed of constituents such as pearlite and spheroidites. Locating micro constituents and quantitatively measuring its presence is key for material researchers to study the physical properties of the carbon steel materials. This micrograph analysis is currently done manually and subjectively by material scientists, which is tedious and time-consuming. Here we propose to apply the image segmentation algorithm called U-Net to achieve automated labeling of steel microstructures on a subset of ultra- high carbon steel image dataset containing pearlite and spheroidite as the primary micro constituents. Our work …

Vector Spaces For Multiple Modal Embeddings, Sabarish Gopalakrishnan

Theses

Deep learning has enabled great advances in the field of natural language processing, computer vision and pattern recognition in general. Deep learning frameworks have been very successful in performing classification, object detection, segmentation and translation. Before objects can be processed, a vector representation of that object needs to be created. For example, sentences and images can be encoded with a sent2vec and image2vec function respectively in preparation for input to a machine learning framework. Neural networks are able to learn efficient vector representation of images, text, audio, videos and 3D point clouds. However, the transfer of knowledge from one modality …

Algorithmic Advertising Discrimination, Joseph Blass Oct 2019

Algorithmic Advertising Discrimination, Joseph Blass

Northwestern University Law Review

The ability of social media companies to precisely target advertisements to individual users based on those users’ characteristics is changing how job opportunities are advertised. Companies like Facebook use machine learning to place their ads, and machine learning systems present risks of discrimination, which current legal doctrines are not designed to deal with. This Note will explain why it is difficult to ensure such systems do not learn discriminatory functions and why it is hard to discern what they have learned as long as they appear to be performing well on their assigned task. This Note then shows how litigation …

On Video Analysis Of Omnidirectional Bee Traffic: Counting Bee Motions With Motion Detection And Image Classification, Vladmir Kulyukin, Sarbajit Mukherjee

Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications

Omnidirectional bee traffic is the number of bees moving in arbitrary directions in close proximity to the landing pad of a given hive over a given period of time. Video bee traffic analysis has the potential to automate the assessment of omnidirectional bee traffic levels, which, in turn, may lead to a complete or partial automation of honeybee colony health assessment. In this investigation, we proposed, implemented, and partially evaluated a two-tier method for counting bee motions to estimate levels of omnidirectional bee traffic in bee traffic videos. Our method couples motion detection with image classification so that motion detection …

Semi-Supervised Regression With Generative Adversarial Networks Using Minimal Labeled Data, Greg Olmschenk Sep 2019

Semi-Supervised Regression With Generative Adversarial Networks Using Minimal Labeled Data, Greg Olmschenk

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This work studies the generalization of semi-supervised generative adversarial networks (GANs) to regression tasks. A novel feature layer contrasting optimization function, in conjunction with a feature matching optimization, allows the adversarial network to learn from unannotated data and thereby reduce the number of labels required to train a predictive network. An analysis of simulated training conditions is performed to explore the capabilities and limitations of the method. In concert with the semi-supervised regression GANs, an improved label topology and upsampling technique for multi-target regression tasks are shown to reduce data requirements. Improvements are demonstrated on a wide variety of vision …

Analyzing Evolution Of Rare Events Through Social Media Data, Xiaoyu Lu Aug 2019

Analyzing Evolution Of Rare Events Through Social Media Data, Xiaoyu Lu

Dissertations

Recently, some researchers have attempted to find a relationship between the evolution of rare events and temporal-spatial patterns of social media activities. Their studies verify that the relationship exists in both time and spatial domains. However, few of those studies can accurately deduce a time point when social media activities are most highly affected by a rare event because producing an accurate temporal pattern of social media during the evolution of a rare event is very difficult. This work expands the current studies along three directions. Firstly, we focus on the intensity of information volume and propose an innovative clustering …

Fast And Effective Techniques For Lwir Radiative Transfer Modeling: A Dimension-Reduction Approach, Nicholas M. Westing, Brett J. Borghetti, Kevin C. Gross

Faculty Publications

The increasing spatial and spectral resolution of hyperspectral imagers yields detailed spectroscopy measurements from both space-based and airborne platforms. These detailed measurements allow for material classification, with many recent advancements from the fields of machine learning and deep learning. In many scenarios, the hyperspectral image must first be corrected or compensated for atmospheric effects. Radiative Transfer (RT) computations can provide look up tables (LUTs) to support these corrections. This research investigates a dimension-reduction approach using machine learning methods to create an effective sensor-specific long-wave infrared (LWIR) RT model.

Sensory Relevance Models, Walt Woods Aug 2019

Sensory Relevance Models, Walt Woods

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation concerns methods for improving the reliability and quality of explanations for decisions based on Neural Networks (NNs). NNs are increasingly part of state-of-the-art solutions for a broad range of fields, including biomedical, logistics, user-recommendation engines, defense, and self-driving vehicles. While NNs form the backbone of these solutions, they are often viewed as "black box" solutions, meaning the only output offered is a final decision, with no insight into how or why that particular decision was made. For high-stakes fields, such as biomedical, where lives are at risk, it is often more important to be able to explain a …

The Importance Of Landscape Position Information And Elevation Uncertainty For Barrier Island Habitat Mapping And Modeling, Nicholas Matthew Enwright

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Barrier islands provide important ecosystem services, including storm protection and erosion control to the mainland, habitat for fish and wildlife, and tourism. As a result, natural resource managers are concerned with monitoring changes to these islands and modeling future states of these environments. Landscape position, such as elevation and distance from shore, influences habitat coverage on barrier islands by regulating exposure to abiotic factors, including waves, tides, and salt spray. Geographers commonly use aerial topographic lidar data for extracting landscape position information. However, researchers rarely consider lidar elevation uncertainty when using automated processes for extracting elevation-dependent habitats from lidar data. …

Computational Studies Of Thermal Properties And Desalination Performance Of Low-Dimensional Materials, Yang Hong Aug 2019

Computational Studies Of Thermal Properties And Desalination Performance Of Low-Dimensional Materials, Yang Hong

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

During the last 30 years, microelectronic devices have been continuously designed and developed with smaller size and yet more functionalities. Today, hundreds of millions of transistors and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor cells can be designed and integrated on a single microchip through 3D packaging and chip stacking technology. A large amount of heat will be generated in a limited space during the operation of microchips. Moreover, there is a high possibility of hot spots due to non-uniform integrated circuit design patterns as some core parts of a microchip work harder than other memory parts. This issue becomes acute as stacked microchips get …

Predicting The Complexity Of Locality Patterns In Loop Nests In C Scientific Programs, Nasser M. Alsaedi Aug 2019

Predicting The Complexity Of Locality Patterns In Loop Nests In C Scientific Programs, Nasser M. Alsaedi

Dissertations

On modern computer systems, the performance of an application depends on its locality. Most existing locality measurements performed by compiler static analysis mainly target analyzing regular array references in loop nests. Measurements based on compiler static analysis have limited applicability when the loop bounds are unknown at compile time, when the control flow is dynamic, or when index arrays or pointer operations are used. In addition, compiler static analysis cannot adapt to input change.

Training-based locality analysis predicts the data reuse change across program inputs to provide run-time information. This analysis quantifies the number of unique memory locations accessed between …
