Exploring The Use Of Machine Learning For Daily Fire Growth Prediction In Alaska, James White May 2021

Exploring The Use Of Machine Learning For Daily Fire Growth Prediction In Alaska, James White

Atmospheric Sciences

Wildfire is a natural but often hazardous part of the Alaskan ecosystems. Physically based wildfire models range from simple relationships used for rapid, in-situ fire behavior analysis to complex weather models used for prediction over several days and weeks. Physical models in Alaska, however, often struggle to integrate weather forecast information to make predictions beyond just a few days. The random forest model explored here is able to leverage an array of variables to identify days of enhanced and reduced satellite fire detections. Peaks and lulls in activity are accurately identified, though exact magnitudes are often incorrect, especially when wildfire …

Using Machine Learning Methods To Predict The Movement Trajectories Of The Louisiana Black Bear, Daniel Clark, David Shaw, Armando Vela, Shane Weinstock, John Santerre, Joseph D. Clark

SMU Data Science Review

In 1992, the Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus) was placed on the U.S. Endangered Species List. This was due to bear populations in Louisiana being small and isolated enough where their populations couldn’t intersect with other populations to grow. Interchange of individuals between subpopulations of bears in Louisiana is critical to maintain genetic diversity and avoid inbreeding effects. Utilizing GPS (Global Positioning System) data gathered from 31 radio-collared bears from 2010 through 2012, this research will investigate how bears traverse the landscape, which has implications for gene exchange. This paper will leverage machine learning tools to improve upon existing …

Real-Time Material State Assessment Of Composites Using Artificial Intelligence And Its Challenges, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian May 2021

Real-Time Material State Assessment Of Composites Using Artificial Intelligence And Its Challenges, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Over several decades of careful experimental investigation and exhaustive development of discrete damage analysis methods including integrated computational mechanics methods, our community knows a great deal about how discrete defects such as matrix cracks and defect growth (e.g. delamination) can be predicted in structural composites. For many practical situations controlled by laminated multiaxial composite structures, the loss of performance and “sudden death” end of life is controlled by defect coupling which becomes a precursor to fracture plane development. These interaction sequences are highly dependent on local details of manufacture, design configurations, and loading for a given application material and influenced …

Data-Driven Recommendation Of Academic Options Based On Personality Traits, Aashish Ghimire

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The choice of academic major and, subsequently, an academic institution has a massive effect on a person’s career. It not only determines their career path but their earning potential, professional happiness, etc. [1] About 40% of people who are admitted to a college do not graduate within six years. Yet, very limited resources are available for students to help make those decisions, and each guidance counselor is responsible for roughly 400 to 900 students across the United States. A tool to help these decisions would benefit students, parents, and guidance counselors.

Various research studies have shown that personality traits affect …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this dissertation, I aim to forecast high utilizers of emergency care and inpatient Medicare services (i.e., healthcare visits). Through a literature review, I demonstrate that accurate and reliable prediction of these future high utilizers will not only reduce healthcare costs but will also improve the overall quality of healthcare for patients. By identifying this population at risk before manifestation, I propose that there is still time to reverse undesirable healthcare trajectories (i.e., individuals whose clinical risk increases an excessive healthcare and treatment burden) through timely attention and proper care coordination. My dissertation culminates in the delivery of state-of-the-art predictive …

Deep Convolutional Spiking Neural Networks For Image Classification, Ruthvik Vaila May 2021

Deep Convolutional Spiking Neural Networks For Image Classification, Ruthvik Vaila

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Spiking neural networks are biologically plausible counterparts of artificial neural networks. Artificial neural networks are usually trained with stochastic gradient descent (SGD) and spiking neural networks are trained with bioinspired spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP). Spiking networks could potentially help in reducing power usage owing to their binary activations. In this work, we use unsupervised STDP in the feature extraction layers of a neural network with instantaneous neurons to extract meaningful features. The extracted binary feature vectors are then classified using classification layers containing neurons with binary activations. Gradient descent (backpropagation) is used only on the output layer to perform …

Imaging Based Prediction Of Pathology In Adult Diffuse Glioma With Applications To Therapy And Prognosis, Evan Gates May 2021

Imaging Based Prediction Of Pathology In Adult Diffuse Glioma With Applications To Therapy And Prognosis, Evan Gates

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The overall aggressiveness of a glioma is measured by histologic and molecular analysis of tissue samples. However, the well-known spatial heterogeneity in gliomas limits the ability for clinicians to use that information to make spatially specific treatment decisions. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) visualizes and assesses the tumor. But, the exact degree to which MRI correlates with the actual underlying tissue characteristics is not known.

In this work, we derive quantitative relationships between imaging and underlying pathology. These relations increase the value of MRI by allowing it to be a better surrogate for underlying pathology and they allow evaluation of the …

Electronic Structure And Dynamics Of Uranyl-Peroxide Species, Ethan T. Hare May 2021

Electronic Structure And Dynamics Of Uranyl-Peroxide Species, Ethan T. Hare

Honors Thesis

Uranyl-peroxide nanocapsules are a unique family of self-assembled actinide species. Uranyl ions rapidly self-assemble in basic peroxidic media through a myriad of reactions to coalesce into a single nanocapsule that includes both peroxide and hydroxide bridging groups between the uranyl moieties. A wide variety of capsules can be formed, and it has been proposed that square and pentagonal building blocks assemble prior to nanocapsule formation. We have studied the speciation of the pentagonal 2) uranyl-peroxide nanocapsule building blocks using density functional theory calculations. We predicted the most favorable speciation pathways for the self-assembly of the building blocks prior to cluster …

Extensive Huffman-Tree-Based Neural Network For The Imbalanced Dataset And Its Application In Accent Recognition, Jeremy Merrill May 2021

Extensive Huffman-Tree-Based Neural Network For The Imbalanced Dataset And Its Application In Accent Recognition, Jeremy Merrill

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

To classify the data-set featured with a large number of heavily imbalanced classes, this thesis proposed an Extensive Huffman-Tree Neural Network (EHTNN), which fabricates multiple component neural network-enabled classifiers (e.g., CNN or SVM) using an extensive Huffman tree. Any given node in EHTNN can have arbitrary number of children. Compared with the Binary Huffman-Tree Neural Network (BHTNN), EHTNN may have smaller tree height, involve fewer component neural networks, and demonstrate more flexibility on handling data imbalance. Using a 16-class exponentially imbalanced audio data-set as the benchmark, the proposed EHTNN was strictly assessed based on the comparisons with alternative methods such …

Machine Learning For Wireless Signal Learning, Logan Smith Apr 2021

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless networks are vulnerable to adversarial devices by spoofing the digital identity of valid wireless devices, allowing unauthorized devices access to the network. Instead of validating devices based on their digital identity, it is possible to use their unique "physical fingerprint" caused by changes in the signal due to deviations in wireless hardware. In this thesis, the physical fingerprint was validated by performing classification with complex-valued neural networks (NN), achieving a high level of accuracy in the process. Additionally, zero-shot learning (ZSL) was implemented to learn discriminant features to separate legitimate from unauthorized devices using outlier detection and then further …
