Theses and Dissertations
Enabling machines to learn measures of human activity from bioelectric signals has many applications in human-machine interaction and healthcare. However, labeled activity recognition datasets are costly to collect and highly varied, which challenges machine learning techniques that rely on large datasets. Furthermore, activity recognition in practice needs to account for user trust - models are motivated to enable interpretability, usability, and information privacy. The objective of this dissertation is to improve adaptability and trustworthiness of machine learning models for human activity recognition from bioelectric signals. We improve adaptability by developing pretraining techniques that initialize models for later specialization to unseen …

Economics Faculty Publications
As natural disasters grow in frequency and intensity with climate change, limiting the populations and properties in harm’s way will be key to adaptation. This study evaluates one approach to discouraging development in risky areas—eliminating public incentives for development, such as infrastructure investments, disaster assistance and federal flood insurance. Using machine learning and matching techniques, we examine the Coastal Barrier Resources System (CBRS), a set of lands where these federal incentives have been removed. We find that the policy leads to lower development densities inside designated areas, increases development in neighbouring areas, reduces flood damages and alters local demographics. Our …

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a dangerous illness that strikes the central nervous system. The body's immune system attacks myelin (an entity above the nerves) and impairs brain-to-body communication. To date, it is not possible to cure MS. However, symptoms can be managed, and treatments can be provided if the disease is diagnosed early. Hence, supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms and several hyperparameter tuning techniques, including Bayesian optimization, have been utilized in this study to predict MS in patients. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis has been conducted before training the classifiers. The most essential markers were chosen using a technique called …

After decades of promise, gravitational waves from a binary black hole system were detected on September 14, 2015 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). Since then, close to 100 new gravitational-wave detections, including those from neutron star and neutron star-black hole binaries, have been made jointly by the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA (LVK) collaboration. LIGO's fourth observing run (O4) has begun, and signals on the order of one per week are expected. This rate will only increase as third-generation ground-based detectors will be getting hundreds of thousands of gravitational-wave signals when they go online in the next decade. Moreover, …

CGU Theses & Dissertations
Bacteriophages are the most ubiquitous biological entity on the planet, but most viruses found in nature cannot be cultured in the laboratory and encode genes whose sequences lack similarity with current nucleotide and protein databases. New predictive methods are thus necessary to determine the phenotype of viruses. In this work, we leverage the physical geometrical constraints of viruses to quantify the correlation between the geometric and genomic characteristics of tailed phages, and predict physical features such as architecture and genome length of uncultured viruses using allometric models and machine learning algorithms. Here, we present a model to predict the T-number …

Asphaltenes are organic compounds that aggregate in crude oil with two dominant molecular architectures: archipelago and continental. Continental architectures possess a single uniform island structure composed of aromatic rings in contrast to archipelago architectures with aromatic cores interconnected through aliphatic chains. The structural composition of asphaltenes varies globally due to geographical differences, posing challenges in their classification due to a lack of uniformity. This study is the first known exploration of using image-based supervised machine learning, particularly the ResNet-50 neural network, for the binary classification of asphaltenes into continental and archipelago motifs. 255 continental and archipelago models underwent structural augmentations …

Mission-Driven Inverse-Design Of Conventional And Unconventional Airplane Configurations Using Machine Learning, Rohan Srinivas Sharma
Doctoral Dissertations
"A key challenge in airplane design has been the long-desired ability to quickly create an airplane design with specific performance properties. To tackle this problem, researchers have traditionally leveraged design space exploration methodologies to iteratively explore a design space via surrogate models. On the other hand, inverse design is a process wherein performance objectives are fixed while a suitable design for satisfying these requirements is calculated. In recent years, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been explored as viable surrogate models because traditional surrogate models struggle with the large number of output to input mapping needed for inverse design problems. In …

The exponential growth of scientific literature in digital repositories poses challenges in interpreting complex attitudes within academic texts. Traditional sentiment analysis methods often struggle with nuanced word meanings due to contextual variations. To address this, we propose the Electra-MPNet-based BiGRU attention classifier that extracts the high-level semantic features from citation sentences using the combined strength of Electra and MPNet encoder layers. These features are then combined to extract long-range dependencies through a stacked BiGRU layer. A linear attention mechanism is imposed to estimate the attention weights and context vector which enables the model to selectively focus on relevant information. The …

The class activation map (CAM) represents the neural-network-derived region of interest, which can help clarify the mechanism of the convolutional neural network’s determination of any class of interest. In medical imaging, it can help medical practitioners diagnose diseases like COVID-19 or pneumonia by highlighting the suspicious regions in Computational Tomography (CT) or chest X-ray (CXR) film. Many contemporary deep learning techniques only focus on COVID-19 classification tasks using CXRs, while few attempt to make it explainable with a saliency map. To fill this research gap, we first propose a VGG-16-architecture-based deep learning approach in combination with image enhancement, segmentation-based region …
