How Negative Sampling Provides Class Balance To Rare Event Case Data Using A Vehicular Accident Prediction Project As A Use Case Scenario, Jeremy Roland
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Rare event case data occur at such an infrequent rate that even having high amounts of it can leave researchers starving for more information. There has always existed a tug and pull relationship among rare event case data, where a higher count of entries often leads to a lack of explanatory variables, and vice versa. In the research spectrum of rare event case probability prediction, several methods of data sampling exist to remedy the main issue of rare event case data: a lack of data to collect and learn from. The most effective methods often involve altering the distribution of …

Deep Q Learning Applied To Stock Trading, Agnibh Dasgupta
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Developing a strategy for stock trading is a vital task for investors. However, it is challenging to obtain an optimal strategy, given the complex and dynamic nature of the stock market. This thesis aims to explore the applications of Reinforcement Learning with the goal of maximizing returns from market investment, keeping in mind the human aspect of trading by utilizing stock prices represented as candlestick graphs. Furthermore, the algorithm studies public interest patterns in form of graphs extracted from Google Trends to make predictions. Deep Q learning has been used to train an agent based on fused images of stock …
Nearest Centroid: A Bridge Between Statistics And Machine Learning, Manoj Thulasidas
Nearest Centroid: A Bridge Between Statistics And Machine Learning, Manoj Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In order to guide our students of machine learning in their statistical thinking, we need conceptually simple and mathematically defensible algorithms. In this paper, we present the Nearest Centroid algorithm (NC) algorithm as a pedagogical tool, combining the key concepts behind two foundational algorithms: K-Means clustering and K Nearest Neighbors (k- NN). In NC, we use the centroid (as defined in the K-Means algorithm) of the observations belonging to each class in our training data set and its distance from a new observation (similar to k-NN) for class prediction. Using this obvious extension, we will illustrate how the concepts of …
New Methods For Deep Learning Based Real-Valued Inter-Residue Distance Prediction, Jacob Barger
New Methods For Deep Learning Based Real-Valued Inter-Residue Distance Prediction, Jacob Barger
Theses
Background: Much of the recent success in protein structure prediction has been a result of accurate protein contact prediction--a binary classification problem. Dozens of methods, built from various types of machine learning and deep learning algorithms, have been published over the last two decades for predicting contacts. Recently, many groups, including Google DeepMind, have demonstrated that reformulating the problem as a multi-class classification problem is a more promising direction to pursue. As an alternative approach, we recently proposed real-valued distance predictions, formulating the problem as a regression problem. The nuances of protein 3D structures make this formulation appropriate, allowing predictions …

Parallel And Asynchronous Distributed Optimization For Power Systems Operation, Ali Mohammadi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Distributed optimization approaches are gaining more attention for solving power systems energy management functions, such as optimal power flow (OPF). Preserving information privacy of autonomous control entities and being more scalable than centralized approaches are two primary reasons for developing distributed algorithms. Moreover, distributed/ decentralized algorithms potentially increase power systems reliability against failures of components or communication links.
In this dissertation, we propose multiple distributed optimization algorithms and convergence performance enhancement techniques to solve the OPF problem. We present a multi-level optimization algorithm, based on analytical target cascading, to formulate and solve a collaborative transmission and distribution OPF problem. This …
Where We’Re Going, We Don’T Need Drivers: Autonomous Vehicles And Ai-Chaperone Liability, Peter Y. Kim
Where We’Re Going, We Don’T Need Drivers: Autonomous Vehicles And Ai-Chaperone Liability, Peter Y. Kim
Catholic University Law Review
The future of mainstream autonomous vehicles is approaching in the rearview mirror. Yet, the current legal regime for tort liability leaves an open question on how tortious Artificial Intelligence (AI) devices and systems that are capable of machine learning will be held accountable. To understand the potential answer, one may simply go back in time and see how this question would be answered under traditional torts. This Comment tests whether the incident involving an autonomous vehicle hitting a pedestrian is covered under the traditional torts, argues that they are incapable of solving this novel problem, and ultimately proposes a new …
Exploring The Potential Of Sparse Coding For Machine Learning, Sheng Yang Lundquist
Exploring The Potential Of Sparse Coding For Machine Learning, Sheng Yang Lundquist
Dissertations and Theses
While deep learning has proven to be successful for various tasks in the field of computer vision, there are several limitations of deep-learning models when compared to human performance. Specifically, human vision is largely robust to noise and distortions, whereas deep learning performance tends to be brittle to modifications of test images, including being susceptible to adversarial examples. Additionally, deep-learning methods typically require very large collections of training examples for good performance on a task, whereas humans can learn to perform the same task with a much smaller number of training examples.
In this dissertation, I investigate whether the use …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Multi-omics studies, which explore the interactions between multiple types of biological factors, have significant advantages over single-omics analysis for their ability to provide a more holistic view of biological processes, uncover the causal and functional mechanisms for complex diseases, and facilitate new discoveries in precision medicine. However, omics datasets often contain missing values, and in multi-omics study designs it is common for individuals to be represented for some omics layers but not all. Since most statistical analyses cannot be applied directly to the incomplete datasets, imputation is typically performed to infer the missing values. Integrative imputation techniques which make use …

On Learning And Generalization To Solve Inverse Problem Of Electrophysiological Imaging, Sandesh Ghimire
Theses
In this dissertation, we are interested in solving a linear inverse problem: inverse electrophysiological (EP) imaging, where our objective is to computationally reconstruct personalized cardiac electrical signals based on body surface electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. EP imaging has shown promise in the diagnosis and treatment planning of cardiac dysfunctions such as atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, ischemia, infarction and ventricular arrhythmia.
Towards this goal, we frame it as a problem of learning a function from the domain of measurements to signals. Depending upon the assumptions, we present two classes of solutions: 1) Bayesian inference in a probabilistic graphical model, 2) Learning from …

Video cameras are common at volcano observatories, but their utility is often limited during periods of crisis due to the large data volume from continuous acquisition and time requirements for manual analysis. For cameras to serve as effective monitoring tools, video frames must be synthesized into relevant time series signals and further analyzed to classify and characterize observable activity. In this study, we use computer vision and machine learning algorithms to identify periods of volcanic activity and quantify plume rise velocities from video observations. Data were collected at Villarrica Volcano, Chile from two visible band cameras located ~17 km from …

Joint 1d And 2d Neural Networks For Automatic Modulation Recognition, Luis M. Rosario Morel
Theses and Dissertations
The digital communication and radar community has recently manifested more interest in using data-driven approaches for tasks such as modulation recognition, channel estimation and distortion correction. In this research we seek to apply an object detector for parameter estimation to perform waveform separation in the time and frequency domain prior to classification. This enables the full automation of detecting and classifying simultaneously occurring waveforms. We leverage a lD ResNet implemented by O'Shea et al. in [1] and the YOLO v3 object detector designed by Redmon et al. in [2]. We conducted an in depth study of the performance of these …

Does The Word "Chien" Bark? Representation Learning In Neural Machine Translation Encoders, Emily Campbell
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis presents experiments with using representation learning to explore how neural networks learn. Neural networks which take text as input create internal representations of the text during their training. Recent work has found that these representations can be used to perform other downstream linguistic tasks, such as part-of-speech (POS) tagging. This demonstrates that the neural networks are learning linguistic information and storing this information in the representations. We focus on the representations created by neural machine translation (NMT) models and whether they can be used in POS tagging. We train 5 NMT models including an auto-encoder. We extract the …

Predicting Attrition - A Driver For Creating Value, Realizing Strategy, And Refining Key Hr Processes, Kevin Mendonsa, Maureen Stolberg, Vivek Viswanathan, Scott Crum
SMU Data Science Review
Talent is the most important asset for every organization's success. While attrition (or churn) and turnover can refer to both employees and customers, this paper will focus on employee attrition only. Many organizations accept attrition as an inevitable cost of doing business and do nothing to adopt or implement mitigating strategies to combat it. World class companies on the other hand take deliberate measures to understand, control and mitigate attrition (turnover) at every stage. Unmitigated attrition can have a devastating effect on an organization's bottom line and market value. In addition, the “invisible" costs of low employee morale, reduced employee …

Comparison Of Machine Learning Models: Gesture Recognition Using A Multimodal Wrist Orthosis For Tetraplegics, Charlie Martin
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Many tetraplegics must wear wrist braces to support paralyzed wrists and hands. However, current wrist orthoses have limited functionality to assist a person’s ability to perform typical activities of daily living other than a small pocket to hold utensils. To enhance the functionality of wrist orthoses, gesture recognition technology can be applied to control mechatronic tools attached to a novel fabricated wrist brace. Gesture recognition is a growing technology for providing touchless human-computer interaction that can be particularly useful for tetraplegics with limited upper-extremity mobility. In this study, three gesture recognition models were compared—two dynamic time-warping models and a hidden …

Atmospheric studies have been carried out for decades to forecast weather and climate trends such as tropical storms, etc. Of recent concern is the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which has a relative influence on the weather and climate trends. Over the years, large weather satellites like the GOES series have been used to monitor these GHGs. However, an in-depth understanding of the movement of these gases requires consistent monitoring, which has given rise to the need for miniaturized satellites. Since the miniaturized satellites are novel, they require a ground-truth like the GOES-16 satellite to validate these observations. …
