Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a unique phenomenon that has been observed in astronauts who have undergone long-duration spaceflight (LDSF). The syndrome is characterized by distinct imaging and clinical findings including optic disc edema, hyperopic refractive shift, posterior globe flattening, and choroidal folds. SANS serves a large barrier to planetary spaceflight such as a mission to Mars and has been noted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a high risk based on its likelihood to occur and its severity to human health and mission performance. While it is a large barrier to future spaceflight, the underlying …

1. Researchers can investigate many aspects of animal ecology through noninvasive photo–identification. Photo–identification is becoming more efficient as matching individuals between photos is increasingly automated. However, the convolutional neural network models that have facilitated this change need many training images to generalize well. As a result, they have often been developed for individual species that meet this threshold. These single-species methods might underperform, as they ignore potential similarities in identifying characteristics and the photo–identification process among species. 2. In this paper, we introduce a multi-species photo–identification model based on a state-of-the-art method in human facial recognition, the ArcFace classification head. …

Clustering Long-Distance Runners Based On Their Technique At One Single Speed Does Not Generalise To Multiple Speeds, Adrian R. Rivadulla, Xi Chen, Dario Cazzola, Grant Trewartha, Ezio Preatoni
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aim of this study was to assess whether clustering runners based on their technique resulted in consistent group allocations across multiple speeds. Eighty-four runners (34 females) completed four 4-minute running stages at 10, 11, 12 and 13 km/h. For each stage, running technique was characterised using a set of continuous variables in the sagittal plane and discrete stride-based variables. An autoencoder neural network was used for dimensionality reduction and agglomerative hierarchical clustering was applied to identify groups of runners with a similar technique. Two clusters for each speed were selected and the clustering partitions at different incremental speeds were …

Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) have gained significant attention for their energy-efficient and fast-inference capabilities, but training SNNs from scratch can be challenging due to the discrete nature of spikes. One alternative method is to convert an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) into an SNN, known as ANN-SNN conversion. Currently, existing ANN-SNN conversion methods often involve redesigning the ANN with a new activation function, rather than utilizing the traditional ReLU, and converting it to an SNN. However, these methods do not take into account the potential performance loss between the regular ANN with ReLU and the tailored ANN. In this work, we …
Empirical Study Of Machine Learning For Intelligent Bearing Fault Diagnosis, Armin Moghadam, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki
Empirical Study Of Machine Learning For Intelligent Bearing Fault Diagnosis, Armin Moghadam, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki
General Engineering
Bearing failure highly impacts performance and production of manufacturing systems, causes safety incidents, and results in casualties and property loss. According to the current literature, bearing faults cause 30-40% of all failures in induction motors. Therefore, identification of bearing faults, at early stages, is crucial to ensure seamless and reliable operation of induction motors in industrial and manufacturing operations. Faults occur in four components of bearing: inner race, outer race, ball, and cage. Regardless of the component in which fault occurs, it causes changes in vibration signals. Therefore, comparing normal signals with faulty ones is helpful in detecting localized faults …

Image Segmentation With Human-In-The-Loop In Automated De-Caking Process For Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing, Vincent Opare Addo Asare-Manu
Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing (AM) becomes a critical technology that increases the speed and flexibility of production and reduces the lead time for high-mix, low-volume manufacturing. One of the major bottlenecks in further increasing its productivity lies around its post-processing procedures. This work focuses on tackling a critical and inevitable step in powder-bed additive manufacturing processes, i.e., powder cleaning or de-caking. Pressing concerns can be raised with human involvement when performing this task manually. Therefore, a robot-driven automatic powder cleaning system could be an alternative to reducing time consumption and increasing safety for AM operators. However, since the color and surface texture …
Unveiling The Hidden Landscape Of Tumors: Developing Cutting-Edge Machine Learning Approaches To Determine The Compositions Of Cells And Exosomes, Bingrui Li
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Cancer emerges from the accumulation of mutation in cancerous cells. While research has traditionally focused on cancer cells, there is increasing recognition that the tumor microenvironment also plays a critical role in modulating tumor progression. However, accurately characterizing compositional changes and functional roles of different cell types and cell subtypes in tumor microenvironments remains a significant challenge. Exosomes, extracellular vesicles secreted by all cells, have gained significance as essential agents of communication among cells within the tumor microenvironment. They can carry a diverse array of biomolecules and are abundantly present in various biological fluids, making them promising candidates as biomarkers …

A good night’s sleep is of the utmost importance for the seamless execution of our cognitive capabilities. Unfortunately, the research shows that one-third of the US adult population is severely sleep deprived. With college students as our focused group, we devised a contactless, unobtrusive mechanism to detect sleep patterns, which, contrary to existing sensor-based solutions, does not require the subject to put on any sensors on the body or buy expensive sleep sensing equipment. We named this mechanism Packets-to-Predictions(P2P) because we leverage the WiFi MAC layer traffic collected in the home and university environments to predict “sleep” and “awake” periods. …

Balanced Blended Space: Foundational Human–Ai Dialogues In A Symmetry-Based Mediation Framework, David Smith
Publications and Research
This working paper documents the early development of the Balanced Blended Space (BBS) framework through a series of iterative interactions between a cognitive agent (human researcher) and a computational agent (AI system) conducted in 2023. The work is motivated by the need for a universal theoretical model capable of describing the integration of physical, virtual, and conceptual spaces, particularly in response to increasing fragmentation across contemporary communication systems.
BBS is proposed as a symmetry-based mediation framework in which relationships between domains—such as physical and virtual space, cognition and computation, and multiple sensory modalities—are treated as structurally equivalent and mappable. Central …

Malicious apps specifically aimed at the Android platform have increased in tandem with the proliferation of mobile devices. Malware is now so carefully written that it is difficult to detect. Due to the exponential growth in malware, manual methods of malware are increasingly ineffective. Although prior writers have proposed numerous high-quality approaches, static and dynamic assessments inherently necessitate intricate procedures. The obfuscation methods used by modern malware are incredibly complex and clever. As a result, it cannot be detected using only static malware analysis. As a result, this work presents a hybrid analysis approach, partially tailored for multiple-feature data, for …

BACKGROUND: Differentiating intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas (iCCA) from hepatic metastases of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PAAD) is challenging. Both tumours have similar morphological and immunohistochemical pattern and share multiple driver mutations. We hypothesised that DNA methylation-based machine-learning algorithms may help perform this task.
METHODS: We assembled genome-wide DNA methylation data for iCCA (n = 259), PAAD (n = 431), and normal bile duct (n = 70) from publicly available sources. We split this cohort into a reference (n = 399) and a validation set (n = 361). Using the reference cohort, we trained three machine learning models to differentiate between these entities. Furthermore, …

This paper studies the impact of adult prosecution on recidivism and employment trajectories for adolescent, first-time felony defendants. We use extensive linked Criminal Justice Administrative Record System and socio-economic data from Wayne County, Michigan (Detroit). Using the discrete age of majority rule and a regression discontinuity design, we find that adult prosecution reduces future criminal charges over 5 years by 0.48 felony cases (↓ 20%) while also worsening labor market outcomes: 0.76 fewer employers (↓ 19%) and $674 fewer earnings (↓ 21%) per year. We develop a novel econometric framework that combines standard regression discontinuity methods with predictive machine learning …

Patients with occlusion myocardial infarction (OMI) and no ST-elevation on presenting electrocardiogram (ECG) are increasing in numbers. These patients have a poor prognosis and would benefit from immediate reperfusion therapy, but, currently, there are no accurate tools to identify them during initial triage. Here we report, to our knowledge, the first observational cohort study to develop machine learning models for the ECG diagnosis of OMI. Using 7,313 consecutive patients from multiple clinical sites, we derived and externally validated an intelligent model that outperformed practicing clinicians and other widely used commercial interpretation systems, substantially boosting both precision and sensitivity. Our derived …

Probing As A Technique To Understand Abstract Spaces, Ashlen A. Plasek
Probing As A Technique To Understand Abstract Spaces, Ashlen A. Plasek
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Machine learning models, while very powerful, have their operation obfuscated behind millions of parameters. This obfuscation can make deriving a human meaningful process from a machine learning model very difficult. However, while the intermediate states of a machine learning model are similarly obfuscated, using probing, we can start to explore looking at possible structure in those intermediate states. Large language models are a prime example of this obfuscation, and probing can begin to allow novel experimentation to be performed.

User Profiling Through Zero-Permission Sensors And Machine Learning, Ahmed Elhussiny
Theses and Dissertations
With the rise of mobile and pervasive computing, users are often ingesting content on the go. Services are constantly competing for attention in a very crowded field. It is only logical that users would allot their attention to the services that are most likely to adapt to their needs and interests. This matter becomes trivial when users create accounts and explicitly inform the services of their demographics and interests. Unfortunately, due to privacy and security concerns, and due to the fast nature of computing today, users see the registration process as an unnecessary hurdle to bypass, effectively refusing to provide …

Aqueous hydrolysis is used to chemically recycle polyethylene terephthalate (PET) due to production of high-quality terephthalic acid (TPA), the PET monomer. PET hydrolysis depends on various factors including PET size, catalyst concentration, and reaction temperature. So, modeling PET hydrolysis by considering the effective factors can provide useful information for material researchers to specify how to design and run these reactions. It will save time, energy, and materials by optimizing the hydrolysis conditions. Machine learning algorithms enable to design models to predict the output results. For the first time, 381 experimental data were gathered to model aqueous hydrolysis of PET. Effective …

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, face-to-face teaching has been replaced by online education to reduce the risks of spreading the Coronavirus. Online examination is an important asset in the context of online learning to assess students, but observing students during testing and ensuring that they do not engage in misbehavior remains a major issue. Human observation is one of the most common methods when conducting an exam to ensure that students do not perform any unexpected behaviors, by entering the student in a laboratory or hall at the university and observing him throughout the exam period visually and soundly. However, this …

Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in the United States, with approximately one in five Americans expected to be diagnosed within their lifetime. Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most prevalent type of skin cancer, and as cases rise globally, physicians need reliable tools for early detection. Artificial intelligence has gained substantial interest as a decision support tool in medicine, particularly in image analysis, where deep learning has proven to be an effective tool. Because specialties such as dermatology rely primarily on visual diagnoses, deep learning could have many diagnostic applications, including the diagnosis of skin cancer. Furthermore, with …

Towards An Experimental Bibliography Of Hemispheric Reconstruction Newspapers, Joshua Ortiz Baco, Benjamin Charles Germain Lee, Jim Casey, Sarah H. Salter
Criticism
Digital collections of newspapers have drawn broader attention to the fragmented and scattered print histories of minoritized communities. Attempts to survey these histories through bibliography, however, quickly meet with a fundamental problem: the practice of bibliographic description calls for creating a static record of social affiliations. Given the overwhelming scholarly consensus that categories such as race, ethnicity, and language are socially constructed, this article introduces an experimental bibliographic method for mapping the vast landscape of historical newspapers. This method extends the machine learning affordances of a recent project called Newspaper Navigator to enumerate the newspapers in Chronicling America according to …

Quantifying Implicit Bias In Judicial Legal Opinions: A Natural Language Processing Approach, Philip N. Surendran
Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses
Implicit bias and criminal justice are two concepts that have long been intertwined. There is no justice without neutrality, and yet how do we tell if the actors enforcing the system are actually impartial? In this thesis, I utilize recent advancements in machine learning to attempt to answer this question. Specifically, I use natural language processing to examine the text of opinions written by judges in appellate courts, and I leverage these findings to build quantifiable measures of implicit bias. In particular, I look at the over/under-representation of certain emotions, sentiments and linguistic styles as a proxy for disparate treatment …

Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the deadliest cancers affecting the female reproductive system. It may present little or no symptoms at the early stages and typically unspecific symptoms at later stages. High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) is the subtype responsible for most ovarian cancer deaths. However, very little is known about the metabolic course of this disease, particularly in its early stages. In this longitudinal study, we examined the temporal course of serum lipidome changes using a robust HGSC mouse model and machine learning data analysis. Early progression of HGSC was marked by increased levels of phosphatidylcholines and phosphatidylethanolamines. …
