“Coming At The Wonder Itself”: Misclassification, Misunderstanding And The Integrated Vision Of Russell Hoban’S 1967 Novel The Mouse And His Child, Charles Richards
“Coming At The Wonder Itself”: Misclassification, Misunderstanding And The Integrated Vision Of Russell Hoban’S 1967 Novel The Mouse And His Child, Charles Richards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
In 1967, Russell Hoban’s first novel, The Mouse and His Child was published and reviewed as a children’s book, despite the fact that the author considered it not to be directed towards a child audience. Since that time, it has been generally analyzed and evaluated as a work of children’s literature (specifically) and not as literature in the general sense. Because the book deals with adult subjects and concepts it has not fared well with those who have measured its success solely on the basis of its being classified as a children’s book. This thesis hopes to liberate the work …
Sicker Ever After: The Invalid As Vampire In Fiction By Arabella Kenealy And Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Brenda Mann Hammack
Sicker Ever After: The Invalid As Vampire In Fiction By Arabella Kenealy And Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Brenda Mann Hammack
College of Humanities and Social Sciences
Throughout the nineteenth century, sociomedical discourses presented contradictory views on middle- and upper-class White women who suffered from prolonged illness. While fragility could be read as sensitivity and thereby as evidence of racial superiority, female patients were often suspected of affecting symptoms or else exposing themselves to lifestyles that precipitated disease and derangement. The willful consumptive of Arabella Kenealy’s “The Beautiful Vampire” and the helpless hysteric in Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s “Luella Miller” prey upon the energies and sympathies of successive caregivers. This essay examines such narratives as reflections of eugenic ideology, which demonized invalids as predatory parasites, as living …
Early Childhood Educators’ Perspectives On The Challenges Of Including Inclusive Literature And Implementing Culturally Informed Teaching Practices, Victoria Campbell Locane
Early Childhood Educators’ Perspectives On The Challenges Of Including Inclusive Literature And Implementing Culturally Informed Teaching Practices, Victoria Campbell Locane
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Even though educators are being encouraged to use culturally informed teaching practices in early childhood classrooms with a focus on including culturally inclusive literature, due to homogenous classroom libraries and minimal training, early childhood educators are challenged to follow these practices. The purpose and research questions for this basic qualitative study explored early childhood educators’ perspectives of the challenges of these practices. Using current research and the conceptual framework of critical race theory in education, research and interview questions were developed. Ten early educators were interviewed using the developed interview protocol. Four themes emerged during open and axial coding that …
Counter-Mapping The Material World Of The Bone Clocks: A Critical Analysis Through Digital Cartography, Anne Howard
Counter-Mapping The Material World Of The Bone Clocks: A Critical Analysis Through Digital Cartography, Anne Howard
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This project develops a reading strategy through mapping, using David Mitchell's 2014 novel The Bone Clocks as a primary text. Through the methods of critical cartography and counter-mapping, this research insists that by making maps that counter the dominant narrative, readers can disrupt the author’s perspective and craft new interpretations that highlight their own experiences. Critical cartography, the reflexive how and why maps are made and used, is all about the awareness of the power dynamics and colonial influences involved in traditional map-making. Choosing to map against dominant power structures is called counter-mapping. To apply these theories to literature, then, …
Literary Fiction And Sympathy: How Reading Makes You A Better Person, Emma Rose Wick
Literary Fiction And Sympathy: How Reading Makes You A Better Person, Emma Rose Wick
Honors Theses and Capstones
I argue in this thesis that literary fiction enhances our ability to sympathize with others as a result of observing—and thereby coming to feel for—the perspectives of the characters by engaging in mental perspective-taking. As a result, we become able to sympathize with an array of individuals whose experiences are unlike our own, and which we may never understand otherwise. I argue that the ability to sympathize with others is valuable for the sake of being a morally good person, and for having an overall good character. This has value in and of itself, particularly from an Aristotelian perspective. I …

Afterlife: Exploring And Accepting Ideas Through Children's Literature, Kiley Vandevelde
Afterlife: Exploring And Accepting Ideas Through Children's Literature, Kiley Vandevelde
Honors Projects
This project is a written and illustrated book for children to assist with the grieving process by exploring different cultural representations of the afterlife. Death is an inescapable part of the human condition. Belief in an afterlife can help children retain a connection to the deceased and can be a useful tool for healing. While very young children (age four to five) inherently believe in existence after death, this decreases after the age of ten. This book targets children aged seven to ten and explains the benefit to believing in an afterlife. It explores different ideas surrounding the afterlife and …
