The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets
The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The vast body of Indian captivity narratives is known mostly to historians, anthropologists, and collectors of Americana. In the rare instances where informed scholarship has turned its attention to the narratives, emphasis has been upon the historical and cultural rather than the literary value of the tales. The Indian captivity narrative has been most commonly viewed as but a thread in the loose fabric of American cultural history, consisting of several "popular," sub-literary genres shaped and differentiated largely by the society for which the narratives were intended. The intention in this study is not so much to overturn that view …
Relationship Between The Narrator And The Black Knight In Chaucer's "The Book Of The Duchess.", Louise Adele Bing
Relationship Between The Narrator And The Black Knight In Chaucer's "The Book Of The Duchess.", Louise Adele Bing
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1970 - 1979
An examination of the dream-vision form and the Hiddle English lyric clarifies the role relationship in Chaucer's The Book of the Duchess, a relationship not fully clarified by past scholarship. In the dream vision a conventional pattern establishes the relationship between the narrator and his superior guide and, in the English lyric form, the "chanson d'aventure," the narrator encounters a sorrowing figure who provides enlightenment through the explanation of his sorrow. Chaucer employs the dream vision's conventional pattern and, in the dream portion of the poem, he makes use of the "chanson d'aventure" form with the added complexities of his …

Sing us a song of social significance Or you can sing until you're blue Let meaning shine in every line Or we won't love you. This snatch of lyrics, sung in the International Ladies Garment Workers. Union revue Pins and Needles of 1937 captures an important aspect of the literary spirit of the 1930's. This decade was marked by a tendency of artists towards political and social commitment, a time when the reconstruction of American society and the menace of Fascism was a cause celebre to which artists could rally. American artists had always been interested in changing society, or …
Character Development In Representative Victorian Novels, George T. Mitchell
Character Development In Representative Victorian Novels, George T. Mitchell
All Master's Theses
This is a study of how characters are developed in five
representative Victorian novels. Character is studied on the
basis of a moral stance which motivates actions. Because the
concept of the moral stance is primarily dependent upon the
individual character, the characters in this paper are studied
in relation to themselves. There are many events and relationships
in the novels which are not discussed here , aspects of
the respective narratives which would illumine other interpretations
but which are irrelevant to this particular study.
