The Travels Abroad Of H. C. Andersen, Don Mowatt Jan 1987

The Travels Abroad Of H. C. Andersen, Don Mowatt

The Bridge

A complete appreciation of Hans Christian Andersen has always been limited to Danish-speaking readers because so much of his private life is most clearly revealed in his letters, diaries, and travel books which remain largely untranslated into English. There is a handful of exceptions, the majority of which are mid-nineteenth century translations from England.

Enok Mortensen's Major Fiction, Dorothy Burton Skardal Jan 1987

Enok Mortensen's Major Fiction, Dorothy Burton Skardal

The Bridge

Enok Mortensen' s literary career was strangely divided. In the 1930s he published a play and three books of fiction in a first burst of activity that began after most other Scandinavian immigrant authors had ceased to publish or had died. After 1936, however, he abruptly ceased to publish fiction except for scattered short stories , and for many years wrote historical works in English instead. In English too was his charming autobiographical account of A Danish Boyhood in 1981. Who would have expected, then, that his last book would return to the novel form after nearly half a century …

Enok Mortensen And The History Of Danish Immigration To America, Eric Helmer Pedersen Jan 1987

Enok Mortensen And The History Of Danish Immigration To America, Eric Helmer Pedersen

The Bridge

Enok Mortensen is probably best known in Denmark through his activity as a guest lecturer at Askov Folk High School in the 1960s and 1970s. Within the confines of a small group of Danes with friends and family in America he also had a name as a writer of fiction. It is true that his first work Mit Folk (1932), a collection of short stories, was published in Askov, Minnesota, but his next, the novel Saledes blev jeg hjeml0s (1934) was published in Holb

Chaucer's Use Of Double And Multiple Negative Constructions For The Development Of Emphatic Devices In "The Canterbury Tales", Gordon Robert Blaise Jan 1987

Chaucer's Use Of Double And Multiple Negative Constructions For The Development Of Emphatic Devices In "The Canterbury Tales", Gordon Robert Blaise

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989

Multiple negation is a grammatical construction that can be found in the prose and poetry of Old and Middle English. There is much evidence to support the premise that Chaucer, in the Canterbury Tales, elevated the poetic use of such negative constructions to levels yet unsurpassed in English literature. Primarily used to emphasize or create ambiguity, Chaucer's negation often reveals more about a character than one would attain under normal circumstances. The General Prologue and The Nun's Priest's Tale both provide numerous examples of a phenomenon in which the application of multiple negation appears to be somewhat selective, adding to …

Agenda: External Development Affecting The National Parks: Preserving "The Best Idea We Ever Had", University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center

External Development Affecting the National Parks: Preserving "The Best Idea We Ever Had" (September 14-16)

Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Daniel Magraw.

The conference will be held at the Aspen Lodge, adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado.

It was Wallace Stegner who called the national parks "the best idea we ever had." The continuing increases in usage attest to their popularity. National parks are created to preserve areas of special scenic and cultural value for enjoyment and use. Managing the parks in a manner that protects the important values and purposes for which they were created presents important and difficult …

American Studies: Civil War, The Correlation Of Literature And History Studies In High School, Arlene Kellogg

The Poetic Unity Of Edmund Spenser's "Complaints", Linda Mary Vecchi Jan 1986

The Poetic Unity Of Edmund Spenser's "Complaints", Linda Mary Vecchi

Digitized Theses

This study offers a revaluation of the Complaints volume. It proposes that Spenser's poems of 1591 are unified both generically and thematically. Chapter One reviews the arguments for accepting the Complaints as an authorized collection of Spenser's works and establishes that all the poems in the volume are complaints. Chapter Two surveys the critical background of the Complaints poems, bringing together material published from 1591 to the present date and providing an assessment of the various estimates of the poems. Chapters Three and Four consider the development of the complaint genre. Chapter Three looks specifically at the classical and Biblical …

A Critical Study Of The Novels Of John Fowles, Katherine M. Tarbox Jan 1986

A Critical Study Of The Novels Of John Fowles, Katherine M. Tarbox

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation offers a prismatic view of John Fowles's novels. My approach accords with his major theme: that true perception is "seeing whole." My readings involve, first, a close textual analysis which demonstrates how Fowles uses patterning, counterpoint, symbol and image clusters to suggest the nature of reality. I also examine extensively Fowles's use of rhetoric. The study of his artistry inevitably leads to a discussion of his themes. I have considered Fowles's theory of history, his feeling that individual self-awareness is the key to the evolution of the species, and that one's personal freedom should be unassailable.

My work …

Le Symbolisme De L'Invitation Dans La Poesie D'Alfred De Vigny: Une Etude De Cinq Categories Ou Themes-Symboles. (French Text)., Carlos Moda

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Stories And Storytelling In The "Libro De Buen Amor": Juan Ruiz's Use Of Folktales To Admonish, Persuade And Deceive (Spain)., Cynthia Powell Jayne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Libro de buen amor, a fourteenth century Spanish text by Juan Ruiz, is an extensive and complex poem rich in partially hidden messages. Thirty-five popular medieval tales form an integral part of the body of the work, and convey important information to the reader through the text of the tales and through the storytelling context created by the author. Scholars have studied the tales most often from an historical perspective, and analyzed them separately from the central narrative; or have studied the textual materials with little emphasis on the function of the tales. Although such studies provide valuable information, …

Response To Failure As Reflected In The Poetry Of G. M. Hopkins, His Contemporaries (Francis Thompson And Lionel Johnson), And The Moderns (William Butler Yeats, Ireland, T. S. Eliot)., Pushpa Naidu Parekh Jan 1986

Response To Failure As Reflected In The Poetry Of G. M. Hopkins, His Contemporaries (Francis Thompson And Lionel Johnson), And The Moderns (William Butler Yeats, Ireland, T. S. Eliot)., Pushpa Naidu Parekh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study of the poetic persona's responses to the experience of failure, as expressed in the poetry of G. M. Hopkins, his minor contemporaries (Francis Thompson and Lionel Johnson), and the moderns (particularly Dylan Thomas), actualizes the poet-text-reader interactions in the reading experience. Chapter one concentrates on the Hopkins persona as he responds to his failures in priesthood and poetry writing, the effects upon the reader, the reader's involvement in the outcome of the poem, and the parallels and divergences between Hopkins and the persona. Chapter two studies Hopkins' persona in his struggle to move from human isolation to human …

Suicide In Henry James's Fiction., Mary John Joseph Jan 1986

Suicide In Henry James's Fiction., Mary John Joseph

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A writer who emphasizes the workings of the minds of his characters by working "an acre of embroidery on an inch of canvas," James calls attention to the portrayal of self-willed deaths in his fiction. Writing in the period following the glorification of the suicidal deaths of Werther and Chatterton, James creates several suicidal characters. Having grown up in a highly individualistic family that emphasized the exercise of free will, and being one who revels in the probing of his characters' consciousnesses, James considered important the role of will in matters of life and death. The ruinous effects of displacement …

The Image Of Walking In Hawthorne's Fiction (Journey Motif, Pilgrimage)., Frances Murphy Zauhar Jan 1986

The Image Of Walking In Hawthorne's Fiction (Journey Motif, Pilgrimage)., Frances Murphy Zauhar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Various scholars have referred to the metaphorical journey in Hawthorne's work. This is the first comprehensive study of the journey image in Hawthorne's fiction. Inquiring into the relationship between the imagery in Hawthorne's short stories and his longer fiction, the study examines the sources of Hawthorne's fascination with the journey motif. Hawthorne uses the journey in his first published work, Fanshawe. Both contrived and derivative of his reading of travel literature and fiction, especially The Pilgrim's Progress, Fanshawe exhibits all facets of the journey-related imagery that Hawthorne employs in his later fiction. Hawthorne wrote his short stories after he wrote …

The Embrace Is All: Galway Kinnell's Poetry, 1950 - 1985, James William Robinson Jan 1986

The Embrace Is All: Galway Kinnell's Poetry, 1950 - 1985, James William Robinson

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation contains two major parts: an essay and an extensive bibliography. The essay discusses Kinnell's poetry in order to illuminate his major themes and describe his poetics. The bibliography provides virtually complete lists of primary and secondary materials. Both essay and bibliography owe much to a study of the Charles G. Bell Collection at Dimond Library, University of New Hampshire. The collection contains letters and drafts sent by Kinnell to Bell over a 33-year period. Notes on the Bell Collection appear in an appendix to the dissertation.

The essay, first major part of the dissertation, examines Kinnell's poetry and …

Amory Blaine And The "Purgatorio" ("This Side Of Paradise", "Divine Comedy", Fitzgerald, Dante), Eugene M. Arnone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989

Fitzgerald's first novel, This Side of Paradise, is a well organized and intricately detailed work which uses as its basic metaphor the middle poem of the Divine Comedy by Dante Al ighieri. Thematically, structurally, and symbolically, Fitzgerald's novel parallels Dante's poem, incorporating the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Mirrors of Narcissus motif, Dante's idea of Amore, and the symbolic figure of Beatrice. Critics have overlooked Dante as a source for Fitzgerald's work and therefore have not adequately explained the thematic concerns of this novel.

Comic Spirit Of Renart, The Trickster, In Chaucer's "Nun's Priest's Tale", Joelle Renee Baudouin Jan 1986

Comic Spirit Of Renart, The Trickster, In Chaucer's "Nun's Priest's Tale", Joelle Renee Baudouin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989

The Renart cycle, which originated in France in the last years of the twelfth century in a series of "branches," am o ng them in particular Branch II-Va of Pierre de Saint-Cloud, eventually appeared in England in Chaucer's "Nun's Priest's Tale." Nineteenth-century criticism of the Roman de Renart, emphasizing true-to-life detail, has been rejected by twentieth-century critics who defend especially the satiric elements in the story. There is, however, another dimension to the Renart cycle, that is, the disruptive yet attractive force of the fox, which Chaucer allows to emerge in the "Nun's Priest's Tale," although Chaucer criticism has generally …

Danish-American Literature In Transition, Dorothy Burton Skardal Jan 1986

Danish-American Literature In Transition, Dorothy Burton Skardal

The Bridge

Danish-American literature was written by Danish immigrants in the United States mainly about and for members of their own group. Their lives were lived in constant psychological and cultural flux undergoing the pressures of assimilation; therefore their literature both grew out of and recorded multifaceted processes of transition. Today the literature Danish immigrants wrote is itself in transition: long unread or forgotten, it is now being rediscovered by Americans of Danish heritage. This brief introduction to the main Danish-American writers is meant to stimulate still more to reclaim their heritage preserved in Danish-language fiction and poetry.

Promotion Of Critical And Creative Thinking Skills Through The Teaching Of Poetry, Maura H. Albert

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This curriculum project has developed gradually over the past fourteen years during which time I have been teaching in the public elementary schools. I have always loved poetry; therefore it seemed natural to make the reading of poetry a standard part of my curriculum even in my first years of teaching. As the years went by and my own increasing enjoyment in reading poetry was coupled with and encouraged by the positive reactions of the children I taught, it seemed only natural not only to read more poetry in the classroom, but, also, to begin to do some exploration of …

A Handbook To Raymond Knister's Longer Prose Fiction, Joy Rachel Kuropatwa

Digitized Theses

Raymond Knister (1899-1932), an experimental Canadian writer of the nineteen-twenties, wrote longer prose fiction which withstands the test of time, but has received little attention. Much of Knister's longer prose fiction remains unpublished.;The purpose of this thesis is to provide a critical introduction to Knister's novels and novellas in the form of a handbook. Since so much of Knister's longer prose fiction is unpublished, the handbook format followed in this thesis is designed to provide a clear and convenient introduction to Knister's longer prose fiction. Each work is discussed under the following headings: dates of composition and the text, the …
