Imaginative Integration In Four Novels By Doris Lessing, Brian Gerard Blondin Jan 1989

Imaginative Integration In Four Novels By Doris Lessing, Brian Gerard Blondin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989

Within the remarkable diversity of Doris Lessing's fiction, the author's interest in the interrelation between the individual and the collective remains a constant. Her early works pursued this theme within a socio-political framework; however, her continued explorations have evolved an apolitical ethos which unfolds progressively in all of her work since The Golden Notebook. The impetus of this development, which has encouraged Lessing's experiments with various narrative techniques, is her desire to articulate a formula integrating the self with society; in one form or another, the catalyst of this integration is the creative imagination. By tracing related thematic and aesthetic …

John Ashbery's "Slightly Rumpled Realism", Mary Kay Boyd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989

John Ashbery says that reality includes our imperfect perception of it, and his poems are demonstrations of the indirect "ways" in which reality comes at him. With a cursory reading of Ashbery's poetry, it seems to mirror the modern state of chaos and unconnectedness, but on subsequent readings, after the anxiety of feeling lost has subsided, many connections begin to surface. His ideas on uncertainty and creativity cross disciplinary boundaries in such fields as science, philosophy, mathematics, psychology, history, and religion. Rather than recounting his own experiences in his poetry, he uses abstract language to describe the manner in which …

Technique Of Morality: Post-Transactional Readings Of "The Turn Of The Screw" And "Lolita", Charles Paul Bretan Jan 1989

Technique Of Morality: Post-Transactional Readings Of "The Turn Of The Screw" And "Lolita", Charles Paul Bretan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989

Over the years the study of literature has shifted its attention from the author to the text to the reader and back again--all this in an attempt to understand what a text means and how that meaning got into the text in the first place. Wayne C. Booth's rhetorical model of interpretation, while excellent in its detailing rhetorical techniques and their effects on the reader, ignores both the active role readers play in interpretation and the creative power of language. This thesis takes a post-transactional approach to The Turn of the Screw and Lolita in an attempt to expose two …

"To Enter Arcanum": Gnosticism In Ezra Pound's "Cantos", Demetres P. Tryphonopoulos Jan 1988

"To Enter Arcanum": Gnosticism In Ezra Pound's "Cantos", Demetres P. Tryphonopoulos

Digitized Theses

Despite the painstaking work of Pound scholars, the mythos of the Cantos has yet to be properly understood, because its occult sources have not been examined sufficiently. The "occult" here includes the body of speculative, heterodox religious thought which lies outside all religious doxologies--including Gnosticism, Hermeticism, Neoplatonism, Cabalism, and Theosophy. As well, occultism involves belief in gnosis or direct awareness of the Divine which can be attained through myesis or ritual initiation.;Drawing upon recently published material and unpublished Pound letters, the thesis traces Pound's intimate engagement with specific occultists (Mead, Upward, and Orage) and their ideas, and argues that speculative …
