The Follies Incident To Human Nature: Susanna Moodie's Life Story As Spiritual Autobiography In "Rachel Wilde," "Flora Lyndsay," "Roughing It In The Bush" And "Life In The Clearings", Susan Yvonne Greenfield
The Follies Incident To Human Nature: Susanna Moodie's Life Story As Spiritual Autobiography In "Rachel Wilde," "Flora Lyndsay," "Roughing It In The Bush" And "Life In The Clearings", Susan Yvonne Greenfield

Most critics of Moodie's work have assumed that her response to emigrating remained a negative one. They generally seem to agree that the reactions she shows herself as experiencing in 1832-33, still hold valid for the woman she was when she published her autobiographical stories. Moreover, it is generally held that Moodie's portrayal of herself is naive.;This thesis suggests that it is actually interesting to see in Moodie a woman who viewed herself as flawed and who portrayed herself as such throughout her four exercises in life writing--"Rachel Wilde" (1847-48), Flora Lyndsay (1854), Roughing It in the Bush (1852) and …

"Veracity Of Vision": Narrative Perspective In William Morris's Prose Romances And Political Fictions, Isolde Karen Herbert
"Veracity Of Vision": Narrative Perspective In William Morris's Prose Romances And Political Fictions, Isolde Karen Herbert
Digitized Theses
This dissertation explores the dialectical relations between narrative and perception in Morris's 1856 tales, his overtly political fictions, and his late fantastic romances (The Glittering Plain, The Wood Beyond the World, and The Water of the Wondrous Isles). The tales in The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine (1856) initiate Morris's attempts to alienate the reader from conventional modes of perception: narrative positions which elude traditional boundaries between life and death, past and present, and subjective and objective reformulate preconceived ideas about linguistic representations of time and space. In the political romances, (The Pilgrims of Hope, A Dream of John Ball, News …

"This Land, Too, Has Its Own Springs": The Northern, Spiritual Vision In W W E Ross's Poetry, S B. Matthews

Recently published correspondence between Ross and Gustafson and between Ross and Smith, as well as newly available unpublished material, has made a re-evaluation of the body of Ross's work necessary. The evidence now suggests that spiritualism and occultism were essential to Ross's thought from very early in his poetic career, and that the deceptively simple poems of the Canadian north for which he is best known participate in his overall vision of the operation of the supernatural in the natural world.;The thesis reviews what is known of Ross and of his poetic achievement and then suggests a new way of …

Robert Kroetsch's Open Field: A Study In Canadian Postmodernism, James R. Snyder
Robert Kroetsch's Open Field: A Study In Canadian Postmodernism, James R. Snyder
Digitized Theses
Critics of Robert Kroetsch's fiction have praised his willingness to take risks employ new and difficult forms, but many of the same critics decried this openness and difficulty of form when it was carried to an extreme in his later novels. This thesis considers the development of Kroetsch's work from the perspective that his latest, most adventurous work is also his best and most typical. The focus of the thesis is Kroetsch's fiction, with relatively brief examinations of his poetic and critical works, chiefly in terms of how they pertain to the direction his fiction takes.;Kroetsch's main theme is the …

Authorial Introductions: Presentations Of The Self As Author In Prefaces And Autobiographies. (Volumes I And Ii)., Laurie Frances Leach
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the prefaces and autobiographies of creative writers as "authorial introductions," textual spaces in which writers present themselves to their readers as authors. It consists of three main parts. Part One concerns autobiographical prefaces by two writers, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Mary Shelley, who did not write autobiographies and who were defensive about the autobiographical content of their prefaces. Both writers were ambivalent about authorship and hesitant about bringing themselves "forward in print," but within the limits of their prefaces, they were able to speak autobiographically and portray themselves as authors. Part Two examines the autobiographies and prefaces of …

An Overview Of Bibliotherapy And Its Applications In The Elementary Classroom, Kerry Sue Abernathy
All Graduate Projects
Bibliotherapy has been used for many years as an aid to the healing process. The concept of using literature to promote mental health has been increasingly accepted as a valid therapeutic method in recent years. Bibliotherapy has, in the past, been used primarily with adults. This study will focus on recent developments to help children grow and develop a positive self-concept through literature. Book lists have been compiled from the many children's books available on the subjects of death and dying, illness, divorce, fears, handicaps, blended families, single parents, friendship, physical development, family relationships, attitudes and values, emotions and feelings, …
