From Image To Identity: The Search For Authenticity In The Early Modernist Drama Of Maxwell Anderson, John Millington Synge, Federico Garcia Lorca And D. H. Lawrence., Janice Maria Oliver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Working roughly from the last decades of the nineteenth century into the first quarter of the twentieth, early modernist playwrights wrote in times which were dominated by realism, but when many still looked to poetic forms for expression. They shared artistic space with realist practitioners like Ibsen and Shaw on the one hand and poetic dramatists like Yeats and Eliot on the other. Interested in dramatizing the conflict between the private and the public selves, they faced a central problem of creating a form and attendant style that could bridge the gap between the individual and her/his environment, thus harmonizing …

"The Accidental Tourist": Novel And Film, Jennifer Y. Askew Jan 1991

"The Accidental Tourist": Novel And Film, Jennifer Y. Askew

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The Accidental Tourist, a 1985 novel by Anne Tyler, is the story of Macon Leary, a man whose life and marriage have been shattered by the tragic death of his son. Despite these dismal circumstances, Tyler's book is quirky, offbeat and ultimately comic, due primarily to the unfailing tolerance and humor of the author herself. Lawrence Kasdan's 1988 film adaptation of Tyler's novel is thematically consistent with the book. Kasdan unerringly recognized the scenes naturally suited to dramatization, and in places he successfully transfers Tyler's dialogue directly to the screen with effective comic results. Throughout most of the film, however, …

"The Battle Of Maldon": Evidence Of The Move Away From Epic Heroism, Diane Stetson Baird Jan 1991

"The Battle Of Maldon": Evidence Of The Move Away From Epic Heroism, Diane Stetson Baird

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The Battle of Maldon is a poem of change, a pivot point in the English literary tradition. It lies between Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, both in time and in intent. The Maldon poet created finely interrelated philosophic and social commentary in his poem, playing the epic hero against the newer Christian martyr. He used both characterizations to create a picture of Byrhtnoth as a political martyr. With some understanding of the historical and religious perspectives of tenth century England, it is possible to begin to appreciate The Battle of Maldon and to understand its pivotal role …

Chaos In Kurt Vonnegut's "Sirens Of Titan", David Lawrence Barney Jan 1991

Chaos In Kurt Vonnegut's "Sirens Of Titan", David Lawrence Barney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The individual's search for absolute order and meaning within a chaotic universe is an important theme in the novels of Kurt Vonnegut. In Sirens of Titan, Malachi Constant unwillingly undertakes this futile quest and is consequently victimized, philosophically and psychologically, by various agents and symbols of chaos. After spiraling outward into the chaotic cosmos, his simplistic beliefs revealed to be illusion, Malachi spirals back to himself and to Earth, literally and figuratively, only to confront the illusions within. In addition, the form of Sirens of Titan can be seen as a metaphor for meaninglessness, mirroring and echoing Malachi Constant's and …

Gabriel Conroy And Closure In "Dubliners", Virginia Mary Becker Jan 1991

Gabriel Conroy And Closure In "Dubliners", Virginia Mary Becker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Gabriel Conroy in "The Dead" appears to be the boy of the first three stories in adulthood. The boy's artistic mind is formed and limited by adult influences so that he dreams of escape. Gabriel has the same artistic disposition and has developed a limited outlet for his talents. He, too, envisions escape. Gabriel's epiphany and his sense of insecurity and pride are so like the boy's that the similarity suggests one character who has developed a habit of introspection. Finally, Gabriel's sexual anxiety implies that he fears women and fears his own sexuality. Joyce repeats patterns of imagery in …

Genesis, Development, And Decline Of Hemingway's Tauromachian Oeuvre, Jack I. Bona Jan 1991

Genesis, Development, And Decline Of Hemingway's Tauromachian Oeuvre, Jack I. Bona

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Hemingway's interest in bullfighting pervaded his entire literary career. Taurine topics--in fiction and non-fiction--in his early writings such as In Our Time and articles for the Toronto Star Weekly parallel his developing style. The peak of his knowledge of tauromachy is reached in "The Undefeated," The Sun Also Rises, and Death in the Afternoon. The decline of his writing style is exemplified in "The Dangerous Summer" when his physical and mental health also declined. These taurine-related works contain themes that reflect some of Hemingway's personal anxieties about not being readily published and about rivalries with other writers.

Afterword: Voices And Violence--A Dialogue, Ellen W. Clayton, Jay Clayton Nov 1990

Afterword: Voices And Violence--A Dialogue, Ellen W. Clayton, Jay Clayton

Vanderbilt Law Review

WE: When organizing this Symposium on the topic of "Law, Literature, and Social Change," we asked whether current trends in literature and in literary, social, and legal theory actually could play a role in bringing about social change. The authors gathered at this Symposium responded to this question in very different ways. As we read their articles and comments, however, and as we talked about their various approaches, some common themes began to emerge. Narrative seemed important. The way people split public life off from private experience came up frequently. But violence seemed to be on everyone's mind.

IT: Why violence? …

Critical Thinking Through Literature: A Dialogue Teaching Model, William H. Hayes Sep 1990

Critical Thinking Through Literature: A Dialogue Teaching Model, William H. Hayes

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Many traditional approaches to teaching literature depend on lecturing and asking pointed or leading questions which require correct answers. Through such lessons have their value, they do not engage students in earnest and thoughtful discussions of literature. Such methods may be useful for reviewing material, but they are not sufficient to foster critical thinking. The Dialogue Teaching Model evolves in eight phases. It allows students to respond to literature at their own level of understanding by giving students the opportunity to interpret readings on their own. Using a dialogue approach, the teacher has students make judgments or decision about their …

In Appreciation Of Birago I. Diop: A Subtle Advocate Of Négritude, Winston E. Langley Jun 1990

In Appreciation Of Birago I. Diop: A Subtle Advocate Of Négritude, Winston E. Langley

Trotter Review

The closing weeks of the last decade brought with them the death of three distinguished world figures: Samuel Beckett, the Irish-French playwright, novelist, and poet; Andrei D. Sakharov, the Soviet nuclear physicist, human rights advocate, and leader in the international disarmament movement; and Birago I. Diop, the Senegalese poet, storyteller, and statesman. In the case of the former two, leading U.S. newspapers and other media paid merited tribute in the amplest of proportions; in case of the last, however, it was as if he had either never lived or had gained no standing of importance worthy of much attention. Diop …

Determining The Computer Literacy Levels Of Vocational Teachers In Southern Nevada And Developing A Computer In-Service Program For Vocational Teachers, James L. Pomeroy

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Clark County Community College Computer Graphics Department program director, was approached by Southern Nevada community college faculty members, secondary vocation.al/technical teachers. and local vocational leadership and asked to develop a computer literacy program for the state's vocational teachers. The most optimistic computer literacy studies conducted nation-wide in the last five years indicated that at least fifty percent of teachers in all disciplines lacked computer literacy. With the need for a program established by prior studies and local requests, this study was designed to determine the extend of need prior to the college committing resources for program implementation.

The study methodology …
