Supporting Somali- And Hmong-Speaking English Language Learners’ Acquisition Of Morphological Awareness, Danna Bergantine
Supporting Somali- And Hmong-Speaking English Language Learners’ Acquisition Of Morphological Awareness, Danna Bergantine
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Education research has consistently found that supporting students’ understanding of morphology leads to positive literacy outcomes. Students who are English Language Learners may need differentiated support than their English-only peers in this area. Currently, the majority of resources for morphology instruction with ELL students reference Spanish-speakers and rely on cognates between Spanish and English. After Spanish, Somali and Hmong represent the next largest language groups of Minnesota’s ELL population and it is difficult to find resources to support speakers of these languages’ understanding of morphology. Research was conducted to find morphology best practices which do not rely on cognates and …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Phonological knowledge is a component of linguistics that allows children to understand the relationship between sounds and words. It is a skill that should be stimulated and enhanced from the age of 3, as children begin the process of reading and writing at 6. If this component is not yet acquired, it can generate difficulties in the school stage, where learning demands are more challenging and higher cognitive processes are required in terms of decoding phonemes, graphemes, words, and sentences. In this paper, we propose a model that allows us to study the dynamics of phonological knowledge in preschool children. …

An Implementation Study Of Phonological Awareness Assessment Tasks For Literacy Development In D/Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Sara Tuddenham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Minimal auditory input can impact phonological awareness skill acquisition in d/Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students. Teachers of the Deaf and speech-language pathologists can assess and instruct DHH students through methods tailored to their needs, but research on effective strategies is limited. This study explores the development and implementation of a linguistically and culturally inclusive set of phonological awareness tasks for DHH students at Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD). Tasks investigate phonological awareness in spoken English (i.e., rhyming, sound matching, blending, etc.) and American Sign Language (i.e., ASL parameters) for nine DHH students. Results indicate the feasibility …
Reimagining Read-Alouds: Fostering Critical Consciousness And Social Justice Through Children's Literature, Kylie Brigham
Reimagining Read-Alouds: Fostering Critical Consciousness And Social Justice Through Children's Literature, Kylie Brigham
Masters Projects
During this era of heightened political and social divides, it is more important than ever to provide elementary students with inclusive and socially conscious literacy instruction. While classroom read-alouds have been long valued for their impact on literacy development, they are often underutilized as tools for fostering student identity, empathy, and social justice. This project, grounded in the frameworks of critical literacy, culturally responsive pedagogy, and Frierian theory, positions the read-aloud as a powerful entry point for critical and age-appropriate conversations about social issues, representation, and power.
Research has shown that many educators lack the training, tools, and confidence to …
Reflection And Reimagination As Resistance: Towards Humanizing Critical Writing Pedagogy, Grace Y. Kang, Sonia M. Kline
Reflection And Reimagination As Resistance: Towards Humanizing Critical Writing Pedagogy, Grace Y. Kang, Sonia M. Kline
Language Arts Journal of Michigan
Given the pressures, demands, and standardization teachers face in our sociopolitically charged times, teachers need opportunities to reflect and reimagine their instruction. Drawing on critical and related scholarship, we conceptualize critical humanizing writing pedagogy. We share our instructional moves as teacher educators for enacting humanizing writing pedagogy in a graduate course and supporting teachers to enact humanizing writing pedagogy in their K-12 classrooms. Specifically, we show how a graduate student and practicing teacher found ways to shift toward critical orientations as she navigated her school’s curriculum and state standards. We argue that sociocultural and critical lenses provide powerful tools for …
Subject Area Teachers' Perceptions Of The Influence Of Reading Instruction On Middle School Reading Skill Development: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Rachel Guiel
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This discovery of subject area teachers' perceptions of the influence of reading instruction and reading skill development on middle school students' reading comprehension is the theme of this phenomenological study. A subject area teacher was defined as someone who teaches history, science, math, and Bible classes. Middle school students were defined as six, seventh, and eighth-grade students. Reading skill development was defined as vocabulary instruction, background knowledge, and the implementation of flexible reading groups. The theory guiding this study is Vygotsky's sociocultural learning theory, as it describes learning coming before language development, language being the main tool of thought, and …

Communication Disorders and Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Literacy supports participation in education, employment, healthcare, and community living, and enhances communication for individuals who need or use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Research has demonstrated that individuals with developmental disabilities who need or use AAC can successfully acquire a wide range of literacy skills when provided with effective tools and evidence-based, adapted instruction delivered by trained professionals. Unfortunately, individuals who need or use AAC typically face significant barriers to literacy learning: (1) They may be excluded from literacy instruction or only have access to instruction that requires spoken responses severely limiting their participation; (2) Their service providers may …

Centering English Language Learners’ Literacy Through The Use Of Ai-Powered Tools To Enhance Teacher And Student Success, Shalander Samuels, Alecia Blackwood
The Language and Literacy Spectrum
There has been an increase in the number of English Language Learners (ELs) and, therefore, an increase in the number of linguistic diversities in the general classroom nationwide (Clark-Gareca et al., 2020; Cullen, 2015). Technology has been utilized to promote and support English Learners' success as it can be a significant tool for scaffolding and differentiating instruction (Abobaker & Moleta, 2025; Wolf et al., 2016). Artificial Intelligence (AI), to be specific, has emerged as transformative when supporting ELs across K-20 academic spaces, especially with the increasing demand to integrate technology into learning. AI creates pathways to effectively support the needs …

As multilingual learners (MLs) grow in number, educators must shift from deficit-based literacy instruction to asset-based approaches that leverage students' home languages, cultures, and identities. This article explores three research-backed strategies, culturally responsive texts, digital storytelling, and community-integrated literacy projects, that empower MLs and enhance engagement, motivation, and literacy development. Grounded in real-world classroom applications and empirical research, the discussion provides practical solutions for integrating these strategies, addressing common challenges, and fostering an inclusive learning environment. The author, an experienced teacher educator, shares anecdotes on how his students implement these strategies in their diverse classroom settings to maximize ML success. …
Interactive Read-Alouds Of Translingual Texts As A Catalyst For Literacy Engagement Among Emergent Bilingual Elementary Students: A Case Study, Anna Handy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While the population of emergent bilingual students continues to increase in U.S. schools, the teaching force remains predominantly White and monolingual, with many educators underprepared in how to support emergent bilingual students’ literacy development or sustain their diverse linguistic practices. This is reflected in longstanding gaps in performance between monolingual and multilingual students on standardized assessments of reading. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore one possible approach to increase emergent bilingual students’ engagement during and response to literacy instruction: interactive read-alouds of children’s books that incorporate translanguaging. This study sought to describe and interpret how emergent …

Literacy, which according to Jaffré (2004:31) designates “the set of human activities which involve the use of writing, in reception and production”, finds its origins in the various research studies relating to anthropology social in Anglo-Saxon countries (cf. Goody, 1979). She is particularly interested in scriptural practices in research writings taking into account their contextual and socio-cultural dimensions. It can be considered both as a term, as a multidisciplinary field, or even as an approach, which is interested in the multiplicity of discourses emanating from teachers and students and which can be written or oral.

Advanced Literacies In The 21st Century: Examining A Narrative-Based Video Game As A Stealth Assessment For Comprehension, Joseph Paul Fiorentini
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In our technology-rich 21st Century, the need for valid, reliable, and fair literacy assessments remains pertinent to the field of education. This study defines literacy as advanced literacy where comprehension is considered a holistic product of applying acquired knowledge, skills, or abilities (KSA) to contextualized situations. Conventional assessment methods have traditionally parceled out the construct into its component parts (i.e., vocabulary, phonics, fluency, etc.) as a means of understanding the meaning making process from a traditional literacy perspective. Stealth assessments utilize the Evidence-Centered Design (ECD) framework as a robust method for assessing complex constructs holistically within technology rich environments. Adapting …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present
There is much information available on dementia, but information may not be written at an appropriate level for a lay reader. One aim of the CoDESIGN project is to simplify information available for those who have lower levels of literacy. We investigate the potential to simplify documents to reflect the literacy abilities of the reader. We report on the ability of ChatGPT to modify documents to such target reading levels while retaining the accuracy and completeness of the documents, while avoiding the introduction of errors. Results suggest that human supervision is required before documents can be made available to readers.

Effective Elementary Vocabulary Instructional Strategies, Staci A. Brown
Masters Projects
Vocabulary knowledge upon entering school is a known predictor of literacy success (Moody et al., 2018; NPR, 2000). However, students enter school with various levels of vocabulary knowledge, creating gaps in literacy skills. Teachers must be equipped with the most efficient and effective vocabulary instructional strategies to compensate for these deficits in vocabulary and help all students become successful readers (Moody et al., 2018). This project seeks to research the most successful methods of structuring and implementing vocabulary instruction and provide this knowledge to kindergarten and second-grade teachers through professional development (PD). The PD will consist of several workshops introducing …

Embracing Language Diversity: An Exploration Of Elementary Teachers' Perception Of African American English, Manijeh Hart
Embracing Language Diversity: An Exploration Of Elementary Teachers' Perception Of African American English, Manijeh Hart
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Students of African descent often speak in a dialect that differs from the Dominant American English (DAE) dialect, known as African American English (AAE). Since this dialect is not considered mainstream, students who speak and write in this dialect may be at a disadvantage when being assessed on literacy skills and responding to literacy instruction. However, it is possible to address this issue by preparing and supporting teachers in recognizing AAE use in literacy activities and providing them with instructional strategies to support students who use AAE. The goal of this research was to investigate the perceptions that elementary school …
Responding To Technology-Induced Transformations In Writing Education: Conceptualizing And Teaching The Literacies Of Privacy, Originality, And Agency, Shyam Sharma
International Journal of Transformative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
This article explores the transformative impact of technological advancements—especially computers, the internet, and artificial intelligence (AI)—on writing and literacy education. Building on relevant scholarships, it argues that there is an urgent need to update traditional literacy education by adding/extending three additional literacies: the literacies of privacy, originality, and agency. Reconceptualizing privacy, originality, and agency in relation to the reshaping of literacy by emerging technologies in the past few decades, as the article shows, would help advance pedagogies to address the disruption to fundamentals that are worth preserving and building upon. The article addresses the challenges posed by the increasingly public …

Health Literacy’S Relationship With Hearing Loss And Tinnitus In Marines And Sailors At An Air Base, Caton Harris
Theses and Dissertations
Health literacy is listed as an international health issue by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is one of the primary goals of Healthy People 2030 (USDHHR, 2023; WHO, 2023). Health literacy is the minimal amount of information needed to make appropriate health decisions (Nutbeam, 2017). Individuals must have adequate health literacy to sufficiently read and comprehend medical brochures and medical pamphlets and understand verbal instructions from their medical providers (Bo et al., 2014). Poor health literacy can reduce overall quality of life and access to health care. Health literacy is lower in adolescents and lower socioeconomic groups; therefore, the …
