Double Triples, Steve Kahan
Double Triples, Steve Kahan
Word Ways
A double triple is a pair of identical triads that appears consecutively in a word, phrase or name. For example, the word MURMURED contains the double triple MUR, while the phrase ONE PER PERSON contains the double triple PER. The residue of a word, phrase or name that contains a double triple results from removing it and listing the remaining letters in their order of appearance. Accordingly, ED is the residue of MURMURED, while ONESON is the residue of ONE PER PERSON.

More Consecutive Palindromic Triads, Steve Kahan
Word Ways
As introduced in Volume 40, Number 2 of Word Ways, this word b e E K E E P E r contains a pair of consecutive palindromic triads - E K E and E P E. Removing both and running the remaining letters together, what remains is b e r. The twenty five new examples presented below represent the residues after a pair of consecutive palindromic triads has been excised from a familiar word, phrase, or name.

Here is a rather hard puzzle. Assign the sixteen numbers 1 through 15 to the letters of OSCAR THUMPBINDLE so that the eight words BASH, BUMP, CLAD, CURE, HORN, MIND, PLOT, and SITE each sume to 30. There are 86 ways four of the sixteen numbers can sum to 30 and therein lies the puzzle's difficulty.

A Near-Perfect French 9-By-8 Word Rectangle, A. Ross Eckler
A Near-Perfect French 9-By-8 Word Rectangle, A. Ross Eckler
Word Ways
The following 9-by-8 French word rectangle attributed to Jean-Charles Meyrignac appears on the Internet (for example, on www.mathpuzzle.com for May 25 2004). The source says that all but one of the words can be found in the Petit Larousse. This is intermediate in difficulty between an 8-by-8 and a 9-by-9 double word square, the latter of which has never been done in English. No 9-by-8 English rectangles are known by us to exist, but French is particularly adaptable to this form because of the many inflected verb forms.

Transposing 4-Letter Words, Susan Thorpe

In Transposing Rates (WW87195), Jeff Grant listed the 24 transpositions of the four letters AEST. He said "Although some of the terms and references are rather obscure, it is an accomplishment unlikely to be equalled with any other set of four letters". This is a challenge which appears to have lain dormant for 20 years. Here, I offer other sets of 24 transpositions.

In Orthograffiti (WW78217), Richard Lederer showed that a single sound can be demonstrated by many letters. The sounds which concern us here are the long vowels, specifically the sounds of the 5 major vowels A, E, I, O, and U as they are pronounced in the reading of the alphabet. The sound symbols are those of the Phonetics List of the Oxford English Dictionary, Second Edition. However, I include a further parameter. The long vowel sound must either be preceded, or succeeded, by the short 's' sound.

Bill Webster, a direct descendant of Noah Webster, died on September 24, 2001. In his last letter to the editor, written only three days earlier, he noted "I expect to improve on this, when I get a broader word base. Seams know won nose of a compleat list...Have well over 200, and adding continuously."

A 5-Dimensional Magic Die, David S. Dillon, Jeremiah Farrell
Word Ways
This extends the 3-dimensional HOT-PAD and the 4-dimensional SALT-MINE dice described in "Magic Word Dice", May, 2007 to a fifth dimension (see also J. Puder's remarks in the August 2007 Colloquy). A schematic (2-dimensional!) drawing of the 5-cube follows. It is based on the word pair POLAR-MINES and every node word uses exactly one each of the five pairs 1 = P-M, 2 = O-I, 3 = L-N, 4 = A-E and 5 = R-S.

Limerickshaws: The Grand Finale, David Morice
Word Ways
In the last issue of Word Ways, Kickshaws became Limerickshaws, a special edition celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1907 British Limerick Craze. The column began with 28 words found using Google. Each of the words referred to limericks, and each began with an L. Similarly the words above refer to limericks, but they begin with letters other than L. Most of them are terms that writers have made up to refer to invented forms.

Ed and Gudrun Wolpow, have had many connections with the Ecklers over the years and add to the celebration of their retirement. "To choose what to say about the Ecklers, well, each word weighs. The French speak of le violon d'Ingres - Ingres' violin - the violin a hobby for the famed painter, but a consuming one. Ross and Faith played our (and their) violins - a delight in our avocational worlds that we sometimes envied for our main callings. Many thanks for this joyful flourish at the edge of our "real" lives - reminding, as in a great painting, …

Ditcall-Slow: Slowing Native Speech For Language Learners, Dermot Campbell, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Yi Wang, Marty Meinardi, Bunny Richardson, Charles Pritchard
Conference papers
It is a common experience of many learners of a foreign language that native speakers (NSs) of that language speak too quickly for them to understand or imitate. Slowing down a segment of speech with older technology results in the familiar deepening of the voice as the pitch drops as well. The result is unpleasant and not particularly instructive. The DITCall-Slow tool slows recorded speech without tonal distortion, so that the learner has – literally – more time to hear what was said by the NS and, especially at slower playback speeds, can attend to the manner in which the …

Deg Xinag Oral Traditions: Reconnecting Indigenous Language And Education Through Traditional Narratives, Beth R. Leonard
Indigenous Studies
"Deg Xinag," literally 'local language' is the westernmost of the Athabascan 1 languages. The language area is also referred to as "Deg Hit'an," literally, 'local people'. The Deg Hit'an are often referred to inappropriately in anthropological and linguistic literature as "Ingalik," a Yup'ik word meaning 'lice-infested'. There are currently three villages in western, interior Alaska where this language is spoken and about 20 fluent speakers of this language remaining. As I proceeded through my graduate research I came to understand the significance of indigenous language revitalization in relation to its potential contributions to indigenous and cross-cultural education. These contributions include …
