La Mentira Como Una Estrategia De Cortesía Verbal: Estudio Pragmalinguístico De La Telenovela La Saga, Maria Carolina Torres

Even though languages have many things in common they all differ in the way politeness is present in verbal interactions. What might be polite in certain cultures can be considered impolite in other cultures, and this is due to the relationships among the speaker and the hearer, their context, their social needs, desires, and expectations. In this thesis I will try to provide a contextual explanation for some Colombians' use of lies (as a means of politeness to deceive) in their daily life through conversations based on some of Colombia's history. Lies have become so internalized by many Colombian people …

Language Change In Spanish Heritage Speakers: The Interaction Between Lexical And Grammatical Aspect, Jackelyn Kelly Van Buren Jan 2012

Language Change In Spanish Heritage Speakers: The Interaction Between Lexical And Grammatical Aspect, Jackelyn Kelly Van Buren

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis focuses on preterit and imperfect usage in the Spanish of Chilean-American heritage speakers. Spanish heritage speakers in the United States are second generation bilinguals who learn Spanish in the home from Spanish speaking parents and learn English from school and the community (Montrul 2002; Rothman 2007). When societal factors limit heritage language exposure, tense and aspect morphology is susceptible to change (Guijarro-Fuentes & Clibbens 2004). Findings of a study on 11 Chilean-American heritage speakers show that production of the preterit is overextending, resulting in less frequent use of the imperfect. Large-scale studies of US Spanish-English bilinguals’ use of …

Los Antecedentes De Á La Nación Española Sobre Reformas Ortográficas (1852) De Mariano Cubí. Estudio Y Contextualización De Sus Ideas Y Propuestas Sobre Simplificación De La Ortografía, Laura Villa

Global Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study analyzes the spelling reform initiative defended by Mariano Cubí y Soler during the second quarter of the nineteenth century. This renowned Catalan phrenologist composed various writings addressing the need to simplify the Spanish alphabet in order to achieve a complete correspondence between phonemes and graphemes. The development of Cubí’s orthographic theory and model is examined in these pages through a description of several proposals appeared in Gramática de la lengua castellana (1824), Revista Bimestre Cubana (1831), Sistema completo de frenolojía (1843, 1844, 1846) and La Antorcha (1849). Some of these documents – which can be considered the origins …

‘Because When Governments Speak, They Are Not Always Right’: National Construction And Orthographic Conflicts In Mid-Nineteenth Century Spain, Laura Villa

Global Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper analyzes the polemics surrounding the discursive legitimation and political institutionalization of different spelling systems circulating in mid-nineteenth-century Spain. In 1843, teachers associated with Madrid's Literary and Scientific Academy of Primary Education developed a simplified orthography and began to implement it in schools. In response to this independent initiative, Queen Isabel II signed a Royal Decree in 1844 that mandated the exclusive use of Royal Spanish Academy's orthography in Spain's primary education. The Literary and Scientific Academy contested the imposition and took actions to oppose its implementation, by organizing meetings and publishing essays to defend both the simplified orthography …

Collocational Error Types In The Writing Of Iranian Efl Students / Marjan Ahmadi, Marjan Ahmadi Jan 2012

Collocational Error Types In The Writing Of Iranian Efl Students / Marjan Ahmadi, Marjan Ahmadi

Student Works (2010-2019)

Collocations are one of the most important concerns in EFL classes and materials. The significance of second language learners possessing some knowledge of collocaitons is now widely recognized. The learning of collocations can provide advantages such as increasing learners‟ language competence and also enhancing learners‟ communicative competence. Hence collocation knowledge is essential for EFL learners while collocation instructions in EFL courses become a necessity. EFL learners such as Persian learners of English make many collocational errors in their writing and in their speaking due to a lack of collocation competence in English. For instance, Persian/Iranian EFL learners say “learn knowledge” …

On Swearwords And Slang, Robert Moore Jan 2012

On Swearwords And Slang, Robert Moore

Faculty Publications

Slang lexemes and swearwords are commonly discussed in conjunction with each other as though they were slightly different versions of the same phenomenon. However, they clearly are not, as a careful consideration of their different prototypical functions reveals. Each of these lexical categories has a central or core function, and in each case this function is linked to the obligatory expression of affect. Different kinds of affect are entailed in the prototypical uses of slang and of swearwords, but in the case of both of these lexical types, this affect is incompatible with the formality and deference of honorifics, or, …

Iotacism And The Pattern Of Vowel Leveling In Roman To Byzantine Era Manuscripts: Perspectives From The Thomas Gignac Corpus, Craig Meister Jan 2012

Iotacism And The Pattern Of Vowel Leveling In Roman To Byzantine Era Manuscripts: Perspectives From The Thomas Gignac Corpus, Craig Meister

Student Works

After centuries of debate surrounding the change of the Greek simple vowels and diphthongs ι, υ, η, οι, and ει into the phoneme /i/, the process known as iotacism (sometimes referred to as itacism) has become not only an anomaly of philological analysis, but the phonetic reality of this vowel shift and leveling from the phonemes /i/, /oi/, /e:/, /y/, and /ei/ to /i/ have yet to be linguistically analyzed successfully within various systems of linguistic modeling. In order to fill this important gap within the history of the Greek language, this research seeks to use the Roman and Byzantine …

An Interdisciplinary Intervention : The Potential Of The Orff-Schulwerk Approach As A Pedagogical Tool For The Effective Teaching Of Italian To Upper Primary Students In Western Australia, Annamaria Paolino

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Since the second half of the twentieth century, Italian has been the second language spoken in Western Australia. In the primary school sector, there are over two hundred Italian teachers engaged with primary students. Many Italian teachers also use music/song as a pedagogical tool. The first part of the research examines the extent that music/song is used in primary Italian classes, as well as how and why they are used. The second part of the research centres on the use of the Orff-Schulwerk approach as an integrated music approach to teaching Italian. The research examines the success of a trialled …

Evidentiality In Uzbek And Kazakh, Christopher Straughn Dec 2011

Evidentiality In Uzbek And Kazakh, Christopher Straughn

Library Faculty Publications

The purpose of this work is to describe and account for the broad range of phenomena referred to as “evidentiality” in two Turkic languages: Uzbek and Kazakh. Much previous work on the Turkic languages treats evidentiality as a distinct verbal category. However, morphemes that express evidential meaning also often express other meanings such as dubitativity and admirativity, or may even express rhetorical questions. This work follows Friedman (1978; 1981; 1988) and others in considering these meanings to be the result of an evidential-like strategy: the expression of non-confirmativity. In Uzbek and Kazakh, as well as in many other Eurasian languages, …

In his first column as Kickshaws editor in Feb. 1989, Dave Morice showed how one can construct chains of state names using thier postal codes: Maine contains IN, the postal code for Indiana; Indiana contains IA, the postal code for Iowa; Iowa contains WA, the postal code for Washington, and so on. More generally, one can construct a directed network of state names containing a core of states, any one of which can reach any other (AK AL LA IA WA IN ND AND HI), starter states which can be chained to the core but which cannot themselves be reached …

In the simplest kind, the name for a number (say, FIVE) is converted to its sequence of letter values (6, 9, 22, 5) and then an arthimetic expression (using just the elementary operations of add, subtract, multiply, and divide) is sought that uses these numbers in order to produce a value equal to the original number.

Fractional Phrases, Susan Thorpe Nov 2011

Fractional Phrases, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

The phrase HAND OVER FIST could be interepreted as an instruction to place the word HAND over the word Fist. When the letters of HAND and FIST are assigned their aphabetical values (a=1, b=2 etc.) HAND (8+1+14+4) = 27 and FIST (6+9+19+20) = 54. So HAND over Fist = 27/54 which can be reduced to 1/2. Hence, HAND OVER FIST ia a fractional phrase equal to one half.
