On Supervised And Unsupervised Methodologies For Mining Of Text Data., Tanmay Basu Dr. Jul 2015

On Supervised And Unsupervised Methodologies For Mining Of Text Data., Tanmay Basu Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The supervised and unsupervised methodologies of text mining using the plain text data of English language have been discussed. Some new supervised and unsupervised methodologies have been developed for effective mining of the text data after successfully overcoming some limitations of the existing techniques. The problems of unsupervised techniques of text mining, i.e., document clustering methods are addressed. A new similarity measure between documents has been designed to improve the accuracy of measuring the content similarity between documents. Further, a hierarchical document clustering technique is designed using this similarity measure. The main significance of the clustering algorithm is that the number …

Terminological Mediation In Information Technology And Related Fields, Jessica Smith Richards Jul 2015

Terminological Mediation In Information Technology And Related Fields, Jessica Smith Richards

Theses and Dissertations

Terminological dissonance is created by the inherent ambiguity of natural language and compounded by ontological specialization efforts within fields. Terminological dissonance creates high-risk miscommunications in two key areas: within Information Technology as a singular domain, and also between IT and other fields in interdisciplinary projects. A comprehensive literature review revealed a lack of previous effort to acknowledge or solve problems of terminological dissonance within Information Technology. This research provides a comprehensive overview and definition of the terminology mediation space as it relates to Information Technology and adjacent fields. An analysis and verification of the contents and implementation of the terminology …

A Hassle-Free Unsupervised Domain Adaptation Method Using Instance Similarity Features, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang Jul 2015

A Hassle-Free Unsupervised Domain Adaptation Method Using Instance Similarity Features, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a simple yet effective unsupervised domain adaptation method that can be generally applied for different NLP tasks. Our method uses unlabeled target domain instances to induce a set of instance similarity features. These features are then combined with the original features to represent labeled source domain instances. Using three NLP tasks, we show that our method consistently out-performs a few baselines, including SCL, an existing general unsupervised domain adaptation method widely used in NLP. More importantly, our method is very easy to implement and incurs much less computational cost than SCL.

The Coloniality Of Language: Race, Expressivity, Power, And The Darker Side Of Modernity, Gabriela A. Veronelli Jun 2015

The Coloniality Of Language: Race, Expressivity, Power, And The Darker Side Of Modernity, Gabriela A. Veronelli

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This article presents a new framework to analyze linguistic relations of power that examines the linguistic effects of what Aníbal Quijano has theorized as “the coloniality of power.” The argument is organized in two sections. The first section introduces “the coloniality of language,” an expression the author uses to refer to the process of racialization of colonized populations as communicative agents beginning in the sixteenth century and continuing until today. This section includes an account of the language and communication paradigm being developed at the time of the Conquest, which, the author argues, contains the coloniality inside. In the second …

Talking Back, With Reawakened Voices: Analyzing The Potential For Indigenous California Languages Coursework At California Polytechnic State University, Logan Cooper Jun 2015

Talking Back, With Reawakened Voices: Analyzing The Potential For Indigenous California Languages Coursework At California Polytechnic State University, Logan Cooper

Ethnic Studies

The legacy of colonialism in the United States, including genocidal practices and cultural assimilation, has left Indigenous languages endangered. Native peoples, scholars, and activists have been working to revive and heal the languages of America’s first peoples, and the cultures those languages speak to, yet more work remains in the field of language revitalization. California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo currently does not offer any course specifically teaching or discussing Indigenous languages, even those of the Chumash people who know the San Luis Obispo area as their ancestral homelands.

By synthesizing revitalization and Indigenous activist literature with the narratives …

Modern Spoken Coptic And Community Negotiation Of Linguistic Authenticity, Jeremy Toomey May 2015

Modern Spoken Coptic And Community Negotiation Of Linguistic Authenticity, Jeremy Toomey

Linguistics ETDs

The pronunciation of the Coptic language in the liturgies of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria according to the Greco-Bohairic and Old Bohairic pronunciation standards is investigated, together with the sociolinguistic narratives constructed by two Coptic communities surrounding the use of either standard. Field recordings of the liturgy as recited according to both standards are analyzed in order to describe the phonology of the standards, and interviews with users of both standards are analyzed in order to describe the language attitudes of the users of the language. Points of similarity and difference between the narratives constructed by users of the …

Faded Dinosaurs And Closed Puppies: More Mixed And Mashed Metaphors, Don Hauptman

Word Ways

David Carr, the prominent journalist who died earlier this year, wrote in one of his final columns: "Contrast that with Verizon, whose efforts to dip a toe into publishing turned out to be all thumbs." Mixed metaphors are usually errors, In this case, however, Carr used the device intentionally for effect.

New Puzzles On Knight-Graphable Words, Mike Keith, Tristan Miller May 2015

New Puzzles On Knight-Graphable Words, Mike Keith, Tristan Miller

Word Ways

In a previous article we examined some properties of knight-graphable words. A word is knight-graphable (NG) if the distinct letters of the alphabet used in the word can be placed on separate squares of an arbitrarily large chessboard such that a chess knight can spell out the word by starting on the square labelled with the word's first letter and making a series of knight's moves to the successive letters in the word.

Doubling Up, Steve Kahan May 2015

Doubling Up, Steve Kahan

Word Ways

In baseball, a speedy runner can sometimes transform a single into a double by "turning up the jets." An analogous metamorphosis in the world of wordplay creates a new specimen from an old one by replacing one of its interior letters with two copies of the same. For instance, GRIPE becomes GRIPPE when the letter "P" is doubled up.

New Typewriter Words, Darryl Francis May 2015

New Typewriter Words, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

In his Language on Vacation, Dmitri Borgmann drew attention to what he called "typewriter words." Dmitri posed various questions about the longest words which could be typed on the different rows of the typewriter keyboard, words which could be typed entirely by the left hand and words which could be typed entirely by the right hand. As 2015 is the 50th anniversary of the publication of Language on Vacation, it's worth revisiting some of Dmitri's findings.

Gadsby: Wikip_Dia's Lost Lipogram, Tristan Miller

Word Ways

Ernest Vincent Wright's novel Gadsby is legendary among constrained writing enthusiasts. When it was first published in 1939, it was the single largest work of English literature not to contain the letter "e". It is hardly surprising, then, that the book's many reviewers and commentators have sought to pay tribute to it with some modest lipogrammatry of their own. This article tells the story of one such tribute and the years-long battle it sparked on the world's largest and most popular online encyclopedia.

In particular, letter frequency based modeling can be used to compute appropriate letter distributions for a variety of word games. This paper will provide possible letter distributions for two different games: Scrabble and Boggle.
