Be Leaders. Do Leadership., Barry Z. Posner May 2008

Be Leaders. Do Leadership., Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

Too much of the time, business schools teach students about leadership, about leadership theories and concepts, about social psychological concepts as "applied" to leadership. Learning about leadership is not the same as learning to be a leader. We should be teaching our students to be leaders.

Social And Academic Factors That Contribute To Resiliency For At-Risk Students In Georgia Universities, Kimberly Paige Mullen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine resiliency factors in at-risk college students to provide insight and strategies for college administrators who have a genuine desire to attract and retain these students. The researcher focused on college students who were minority, low-income and first generation. This study included three seniors who attended three different universities, and were graduating at the end of the semester. The researcher explored social and academic factors, and the findings overwhelming concluded that students who are at-risk have a harder time obtaining a college degree than non-at-risk students. At-risk students face challenges such as lack …

Georgia Teachers' Perceptions Of Principals' Interpersonal Communication Skills As They Relate To Teacher Performance, Norma Vanessa Kambeya May 2008

Georgia Teachers' Perceptions Of Principals' Interpersonal Communication Skills As They Relate To Teacher Performance, Norma Vanessa Kambeya

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perception of their principals' interpersonal communication skills in relation to teacher performance. This was a qualitative study, where an authoethnographic mode of inquiry was employed. Authoethnography describes research studies of a personal nature (Ellis & Bochner, 2000). Using an interactive interview technique, five teacher participants were asked questions in an effort to elicit teachers' perception of principals' interpersonal communication skills as they relate to teachers performance. This study is significant in determining which interpersonal communication skills as perceived by teachers were most effective and essential in increasing teaching performance. Findings revealed …

Perceived Random Leader Selection In Work Groups, Daniel Marsh Apr 2008

Perceived Random Leader Selection In Work Groups, Daniel Marsh

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Different methods of selecting a leader for work groups have been shown to have significant effects on the group's overall performance (Henningsen, et al., 2004). It has been suggested that systematic selection of leadership is detrimental to a group's performance and cohesiveness in certain cases (Haslam et al., 1998). This has been supported by many studies (Haslam et al., 1998; Henningsen et. al., 2004). In such cases it may be more beneficial to pick a leader in a random fashion instead of picking one due to leadership abilities. It was hypothesized that it is even more beneficial in these cases …

A Study Of Relationship Between Consequences Of Leadership And Transformational Leadership Style Of The Presidents Of Iranian Universities And Institutions Of Higher Education, Nasrin Noorshahi Apr 2008

A Study Of Relationship Between Consequences Of Leadership And Transformational Leadership Style Of The Presidents Of Iranian Universities And Institutions Of Higher Education, Nasrin Noorshahi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

All through history, leadership has been a part of human societies. When leadership is considered as a function, it is an important dimension of management whose presence and existence depends on several skills which can be taken as methods or styles of leadership and guidance on the part of a group of people in order to achieve a certain goal (Bennett and Anderson, 2003).

Authentic Leadership: Do Leader's Values Impact Their Authenticity In The Eyes Of Their Followers? A Quantitative Study, Barbara Clemenson Apr 2008

Authentic Leadership: Do Leader's Values Impact Their Authenticity In The Eyes Of Their Followers? A Quantitative Study, Barbara Clemenson

Student Scholarship

Leadership theory defines authentic leaders as those holding high moral values, and posits that authentic leaders, through their integrity and altruism, inspire followers to emulate them by also developing their own values, integrity and caring. If the authentic leadership construct is valid, then followers must perceive their leaders' integrity and altruism before they will desire to emulate them, and these perceptions should be influenced by leaders' value content. This empirical study addresses that fundamental question: Do leaders' values impact their perceived authenticity--their integrity and altruism--in the eyes of their followers?

Examination Of A Nomological Network Of Team Leadership: A Construct Validation Study, Kari R. Strobel Apr 2008

Examination Of A Nomological Network Of Team Leadership: A Construct Validation Study, Kari R. Strobel

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the construct-related validity evidence for team leadership measurement within the United States Navy. Drawing on literature from industrial/organizational, sport, and military psychology, the current research specified one nomological network for officer team leadership appraisal. The proposed model tested the idea that Naval team leaders engaging in transformational behaviors would be more likely to use and encourage the use of teamwork processes, increase cohesion among team members, and maintain superior mission readiness. The hypotheses were tested with performance appraisal data from 900 Commanders, Lieutenant Commanders, and Lieutenants from aviation, surface, and subsurface warfare communities. The relationships between the …

Evaluating Experiential Leader Development: A Programmatic Of The Effectiveness Of Us Air Force Squadron Officer School Curricula, Jeffrey G. Holland Mar 2008

Evaluating Experiential Leader Development: A Programmatic Of The Effectiveness Of Us Air Force Squadron Officer School Curricula, Jeffrey G. Holland

Theses and Dissertations

Leader development programs often employ experiential learning exercises. The impact of such exercises is not clear. This research investigated experiential leader development using a quasi-experimental design to analyze the differences in two consecutive US Air Force Squadron Officer School (SOS) in-residence classes. The curriculum was altered between classes by the addition of the Combat Leadership Exercise (CLX), an experiential war-gaming activity. Experiential programs regularly use mean differences between pretest and posttest measurements to represent program impact. However, research shows that participants may change the way they evaluate themselves between test administrations due to their experiences in the programs, a phenomenon …

Vincent De Paul As Mentor, Alison Forrestal Ph.D. Mar 2008

Vincent De Paul As Mentor, Alison Forrestal Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

When leading the Congregation or advising individual members, Vincent de Paul acted from spiritual principles as well as an understanding of psychology. He believed that everyone should follow God’s will by loving others and helping them to imitate Christ’s example of charity. By doing this, each served as a mentor to one another. He guided from both a paternal and fraternal perspective. While discipline and judgment were sometimes necessary, he more often dispensed advice and wisdom. Humility, empathy, gentle persuasion, suggestion, affirmation, and flexibility were the cornerstones of his leadership.

Romance Of Leadership As A Leader Emergence Predictor, Troy A. Cerny

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether a link between romance of leadership and leader emergence exists. To test this proposition, a sample population was drawn from a military leadership development program for senior enlisted personnel. The school's 406 students were broken into 28 separate groupings called "flights", each led by an instructor. The data for this study was obtained by administering the Romance of Leadership Scale (RLS) and observing leader emergence within the individual flights over a six-week period. The hypothesis that individuals who exhibit a high romance of leadership will be more likely to emerge as …

Big Issues Resulting In Bold Decisions: How Boards Of High-Performing Professional Societies Engage, Mark T. Engle Jan 2008

Big Issues Resulting In Bold Decisions: How Boards Of High-Performing Professional Societies Engage, Mark T. Engle

Student Scholarship

According to Taylor, Chait, and Holland (1996) and Carver (1997), boards of nonprofit organizations spend too much of their limited available time pursuing trivial decisions. This paper examines how boards of high-performing professional societies tackle big issues. Using a decision theoretic approach, the paper conceptualizes bold decision making as involving a particular decision space (Papadakis, Lioukas, & Chambers, 1998), a set of decision steps (DeSanctis & Gallupe, 1987; Nutt, 1984), and group processes associated with bounded rationality (Boland & Pondy, 1986; Simon, 1991). This framework is measured against findings from fieldwork, resulting in a revised conceptual model and general support …

Leadership Efficacy: Review And Future Directions, Sean T. Hannah, Bruce Avolio, Fred Luthans, Peter D. Harms Jan 2008

Leadership Efficacy: Review And Future Directions, Sean T. Hannah, Bruce Avolio, Fred Luthans, Peter D. Harms

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The concept of leader efficacy has received relatively little attention in the leadership literature. This is somewhat surprising given that effective leadership requires high levels of agency (i.e., deliberately or intentionally exerting positive influence) and confidence. This review uses existing theory and research on leader efficacy as a point of departure for proposing an expanded and multi-level framework for understanding the domain of leadership efficacy that includes eader, follower, and collective efficacies. The primary goals are to provide a conceptual framework to stimulate future theory and research on building efficacious leadership and to understand how such leadership develops and …

Designing And Implementing A Competency-Based Curriculum: Leadership Implications, Ralitsa Akins, Oscar Ingaramo, Maia Eppler, Gilbert Handal Jan 2008

Designing And Implementing A Competency-Based Curriculum: Leadership Implications, Ralitsa Akins, Oscar Ingaramo, Maia Eppler, Gilbert Handal

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Choices in leadership decision-making reflect forces stemming from the leader, the environment and the group, where the quality of the decision and its acceptance are at stake (Yukl 1981). In academic institutions, establishing a supportive learning environment is not sufficient for achieving desired changes; implementing and sustaining the leader’s vision becomes absolutely necessary (Stinson, Pearson, and Lucas 2006).

Leadership Experiences Of Male African-American Secondary Urban Principals: The Impact Of Beliefs, Values And Experiences On School Leadership Practices, Gregory D. Henderson Jan 2008

Leadership Experiences Of Male African-American Secondary Urban Principals: The Impact Of Beliefs, Values And Experiences On School Leadership Practices, Gregory D. Henderson

ETD Archive

Uneasiness about leading ethnically diverse urban schools implies that principals of color may have an important role in accomplishing their schools' goals. Findings from this study revealed that in areas of image administration and relationship development African-American principals and European American principals in urban schools perceive their principals' leadership in a different way. Results revealed that (a) African-American male principals were critical in creating an inclusive school among groups of ethnically diverse groups of students (b) due to their racial affiliation, African-American principals played an important role in mentoring and providing an atmosphere of love and support and (c) African-American …

Examining Career-Related Mentoring And Managerial Performance Across Cultures: A Multilevel Analysis, William A. Gentry, Todd J. Weber, Golnaz Sadri

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

The benefits of the mentoring relationship for protégés have been a primary focus in the mentoring literature. Researchers have recently begun to examine how mentoring can benefit the mentor. The purpose of the present study is to examine whether direct report-ratings of a manager’s career-related mentoring behaviors are related to boss-ratings of that manager’s performance. In addition, this study assesses whether the cultural background of the manager moderates the career-related mentoring–performance relationship via multilevel methodology. Results reveal that managers who are rated by their direct reports as engaging in career-related mentoring behaviors are perceived as better performers by their bosses. …

Development Of Future Leaders: A Case Study On The Bank Of Thailand (Bot), Adisak Chandprapalert, Suda Suwannapirom

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In the chaotic, volatile and complex business environment at the present time, an organization must be able to learn from and adapt to changes in order to enhance competitive advantage. As a result, leaders who make strategic decisions must adopt a new mind-set as new realities emerge and encourage strategic flexibility across and within their organizations (Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskisson, 2005). There are two significant factors to be strategically flexible on a continuing basis including leaders must develop an organization vision with a corresponding strategic plan and have the ability to manage changes (Zaccaro & Banks, 2004). Vision and leadership …

Leaders And Leadership Roles In Relation To Effective Management Of The Human Resources, John Inyang Jan 2008

Leaders And Leadership Roles In Relation To Effective Management Of The Human Resources, John Inyang

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The term leader is defined as a person initiating interaction with other members of a group, a person who moves the group towards group goal. The dictionary definition of a leader is ‘one who leads or goes first’. In other words one who first perceives the group’s needs far ahead of others and therefore plans and enlists the cooperation of others in its implementation. A person is a leader in any social situation in which his ideas and actions influence the thoughts and behaviours of others. The concept of a ‘leader’ therefore implies role-playing for some time. To be called …

Survey Of Leadership Programs: Valued Characteristics Of Leadership Within The Deaf Community, Deborah Kamm-Larew, Marcia Lamkin

JADARA

This study surveyed leadership programs operating for and by the Deaf community through questionnaire and interview data. Three categories of leadership development were identified as currently operating in the United States for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: youth leadership programs, special interest mentoring groups, and formal leadership training programs focused on professional development and leadership skills. In addition, this study identified common leadership traits and training methods within these programs. Using a randomized list of leadership traits, valued characteristics were identified. The traits chosen most often were empowerment, advocacy, and decision making skills.

Separated At Birth: An Inquiry On The Conceptual Independence Of The Entrepreneurship And The Leadership Constructs, Richard C. Becherer, Mark Mendenhall, Karen Ford Eickhoff Jan 2008

Separated At Birth: An Inquiry On The Conceptual Independence Of The Entrepreneurship And The Leadership Constructs, Richard C. Becherer, Mark Mendenhall, Karen Ford Eickhoff

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship and leadership may flow from the same genealogical source and the appearance of separation of the two constructs may be due to differences in the contexts through which the root phenomenon flows. Entrepreneurship and leadership are figuratively different manifestations of the need to create. To better understand the origin of entrepreneurship and leadership, research must first focus on the combinations or hierarchy of traits that are necessary, but perhaps not sufficient, to stimulate the two constructs. Factors that trigger a drive to create or take initiative within the individual in the context of a particular circumstance should be identified, …
