Guided by elements of successful leader development programs, the purpose of this collective qualitative case study was to discover the common issues and factors that lead to success …

What Makes A Veteran-Friendly College Or University Campus?, Donald W-R Allen
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The United States Armed Services has produced some of the finest men and women soldiers in history. After their service, some pursue institutions of higher learning to meet the needs of their continued excellence. Some colleges and universities have failed to meet the slightest requirements of the veteran student: understanding, compassion, respect and college credits for military training and experiential learning. The chapters inside this capstone confirms that veterans must be accepted as a very important part of the campus population. When veteran’s complete college and graduate, they have strategically and successfully completed another important undertaking. To look at a …
Preparing Future Leaders: An Ethnographic Study Exploring The Culture Of Succession Planning And Leader Development In Christian Higher Education, Andrew Barton
Dissertations
The purpose of this ethnographic case study was to explore the culture of succession planning and leader development at Lipscomb University, using the 5C’s: Strategies for succession planning in the academy model. In the face of unprecedented disruption and complexity, the review of literature suggested the higher education sector in the United States is largely underprepared for the upcoming exodus and shortage of leaders. With religiously-affiliated institutions accounting for more than one in five colleges and universities in the US, there were no visible studies attending to succession planning and leader development in Christian higher education. Given the important contribution …

Crisis Management At General Motors And Toyota: An Analysis Of Gender-Specific Communication And Media Coverage, Roxana Maiorescu
Crisis Management At General Motors And Toyota: An Analysis Of Gender-Specific Communication And Media Coverage, Roxana Maiorescu
Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators
This study applied the genderlect theory to analyze General Motors’ and Toyota’s senior executive crisis communication. The discrepancies in the two companies’ crisis responses were explained through female vs. male-specific communication. Further, the study applied the situational crisis communication theory to analyze the news valence in the media coverage of the crises. While a direct correlation between gender-specific communication and news valence was beyond the purpose of this study, the current analysis can serve as a basis for future research on best crisis communication strategies as informed by gender differences.

Utilizing Film To Teach Leadership: An Analysis Of Miracle, Rocky Iv, And Lincoln, Alyssa C. Hilby, Carrie A. Stephens, Christopher T. Stripling
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Presenting verbal and visual material can be an effective teaching tool for learners who are being introduced to new leadership material. Film was selected as the multimedia outlet to engage an individual’s critical thinking skills while demonstrating different leadership components. This study analyzed three films with the intent of assisting a leadership educator in the process of teaching (a) leading teams, (b) leading change, and (c) transformational leadership. It was concluded that Miracle (O’Connor & Ciardi, 2004) was ideal for teaching about leading teams because it exposed the nuances of team dynamics. Additionally, Rocky IV (Stallone, 1985) was ideal for …

Two Models Of Health Sciences Center Leadership During Turbulent Times, Howard F. Stein, Seth Allcorn
International Journal of Leadership and Change
Leadership and change in health sciences centers are explored through contrasting two models of leadership: commonly practiced leadership and what has been referred to as “good enough leadership” (GEL). Several common cases or scenarios are presented through the lens of each model, with the conclusion that good enough leadership is more functional, creative, and healing than more widespread conventional models.

This article discusses the phenomenon of peace leadership, an emerging sub-area of leadership studies. This literature review discusses peace leadership scholarly work specifically identified as such by its authors, and therefore does not include literature potentially viewed as informing the broader discussion of peace leadership. The peace leadership specific scholarly literature discussed herein includes work on the traits, characteristics, and practices of peace leaders; peace leader role and responsibilities; and the connective and collective nature of peace leadership. Discussion of the literature concludes with a proposed definition of peace leadership and three suggestions for ways to continue to build peace …
Profile: Inspiring Alumni Leaders, University Relations
Profile: Inspiring Alumni Leaders, University Relations
Profile (1996-)
This issue of Profile and my impending departure have given me another opportunity: the chance to think about leadership. Why does it matter? What are the elements of effective leadership? And how is it present in Morris alumni? In the pages that follow we focus on several alumni who provide examples of leadership for the rest of us to study and emulate. As we emerge from a summer of violence in this country and around the world, and as we bear witness to an extremely polarized political election season, it seems appropriate to take some time to reflect on what …

Transactive Knowledge Systems, Shared Leadership Style, And Team Effectiveness, Christine L. Baker
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines relationships between transactive memory and transactive knowledge systems, shared leadership style, and team effectiveness. Transactive memory as mediator, perspective-taking and motivation as moderators, and temporal development of transactive memory are also examined. Two studies tested an IMOI model of relationships in a longitudinal field study of students in teams and in an on-line cross-sectional sample of working adults in the United States. Study 1 and 2 provided support for shared leadership style as predictive of transactive memory, and for shared leadership style and transactive memory as predictive of team effectiveness. Both studies support transactive memory and transactive …
Understanding The Glass Cliff Effect: Why Are Female Leaders Being Pushed Toward The Edge?, Yael S. Oelbaum
Understanding The Glass Cliff Effect: Why Are Female Leaders Being Pushed Toward The Edge?, Yael S. Oelbaum
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The glass cliff effect describes a real-world phenomenon in which women are more likely to be appointed to precarious leadership positions in poorly performing organizations, while men are more likely to be appointed to stable leadership positions in successful organizations (Ryan & Haslam, 2005). This effect represents a subtle, yet dangerous, form of gender discrimination that may limit workplace diversity as well as women’s ability to become successful leaders. Importantly, research exploring why women are preferred for more perilous leadership positions is lacking. The main focus of this dissertation is to systematically organize previous theory and empirically examine processes underlying …
A Phenomenological Study Of Effective Leadership In Academic Health Sciences Libraries In The United States, Ricky Lester Fought
A Phenomenological Study Of Effective Leadership In Academic Health Sciences Libraries In The United States, Ricky Lester Fought
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Academic health sciences libraries are experiencing a challenging period of transition and competition. They are still transitioning from a print to electronic environment while facing competition from the Internet and other information providers. Higher education is going through a period of shrinking state appropriations while facing greater accountability and calls for more affordability. These challenging times, however, are also bringing opportunities to libraries to contribute more to their campuses and partner with other departments on new programs and projects. To realize these opportunities and make it through the challenges ahead, academic health sciences libraries will need good leadership. The perceived …

Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together And Others Don't. By Simon Sinek, William K. Koomson
Journal of Applied Christian Leadership
LEADERS EAT LAST: WHY SOME TEAMS PULL TOGETHER AND OTHERS DON’T. Simon Sinek. New York, NY: Portfolio/Penguin (2014). Hardcover, 244 pages.
The author discusses multiple points of views, from political leaders, business leaders, and military leaders to society in general, employees, and managers. According to Sinek, many organizations are failing because their work has become a numbers game, rather than shifting their focus toward developing and understanding the needs of people who work in the organization. “If the leaders of organizations give their people something to believe in, if they offer their people a challenge that outsizes their resources but …

Consciousness Of Connectedness, Greater Purpose And Positive Business, Social And Environmental Outcomes, Joseph Leah
Student Scholarship
Do leaders who define their business in terms of achieving a greater purpose as well as financial profit attain more favorable outcomes in terms of both profit and social or environmental outcomes? When those leaders approach their business with a sense of connectedness (or what we call a "consciousness of connectedness"), do they create an environment in their organizations with higher levels of shared vision, greater compassion and collaboration, and does this in turn lead to positive social and environmental outcomes as well as better economic outcomes? This exploratory research is aimed at investigating how a consciousness of connectedness within …
Social Work Leadership: Emotional Intelligence In A Rural Bsw Program, Edward N. Randle
Social Work Leadership: Emotional Intelligence In A Rural Bsw Program, Edward N. Randle
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
Social work leadership is valuable to the existence and future of the profession. Equally important is leadership within academia. Leadership in academia is impelled and obligated to the historical leaders, agency organizations, communities, and individuals influenced by the profession to lead, provide vision, and educate tomorrow’s leaders. Mary Richmond and Edward Devine assembled social work education in the 1900's and were pioneers significant in shaping the vision of social work. However, there is a scarcity of empirical research regarding social work leadership within academic settings. More specifically, limited literature is available that discusses the philosophical prisms, perceived realities, and behavior …

It has been conveyed that inspiration and creativity are the greatest strengths of architects. Those who possess them often demonstrate innovation and ability to transform diverse, often contradictory, information into a cohesive design. Yet, having architectural and design talent may suggest to some that they also have a broader skill set. Among the competencies that do not necessarily co-exist with inspiration and creativity are those associated with managing or leading a complex project or organization.
Leadership and many of the administrative and project management competencies needed to operate in the modern complex environment of the Architecture profession are largely absent …
Cross-Functional Teams In Defense Reform: Help Or Hindrance?, Christopher J. Lamb
Cross-Functional Teams In Defense Reform: Help Or Hindrance?, Christopher J. Lamb
Strategic Forums
On May 12, 2016, the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) announced its markup of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2017. Committee chairman John McCain (RAZ) stated that the bill “contains the most sweeping reforms of the organization of the Department of Defense [DOD] in a generation.” The House Armed Services Committee version of the NDAA contained fewer reforms, but the committee emphasized that reform was necessary because “security challenges have become more transregional, multi-domain, and multi-functional. . . . U.S. superiority in key warfighting areas is at risk with other nations’ technological advances; and . . …

A Taxonomy Of Effective Leader Behaviors In The Construction Industry, Enrique Leonardo Cabrera-Caban
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The construction industry is a major part of the United States economy, but it is also one of the most dangerous and high-risk industries. The industry is currently facing a shortage of effective leadership, and leaders face unique challenges in coordinating multiple teams of subcontractors on projects. The first step in remedying this shortage is to identify the behaviors of an effective construction leader. To address this need, a taxonomy of effective leader behaviors in construction was developed using grounded theory methodology and rated by construction industry subject matter experts. Archival focus group data from 10 focus groups in three …

Session presented on Friday, July 22, 2016:
Nurse educators are challenged to lead innovative change to create efficient and effective learning environments and improve the quality of the nursing education. In the face of a well-documented shortage of nurse faculty and faculty leaders globally, the need for leadership education, professional development, and mentoring becomes increasingly apparent. The development of academic nurse leaders is a concern at the forefront of organizational planning in nursing programs throughout the world. Without question, as the quality of individual faculty members' leadership ability increases, so does their satisfaction and retention as academicians. Moreover, informed leadership …
Enabling Solutions: Pacers Toolkit Tackles The Wicked Problems Of Bullying In Healthcare, Rita K. Adeniran
Enabling Solutions: Pacers Toolkit Tackles The Wicked Problems Of Bullying In Healthcare, Rita K. Adeniran
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Friday, July 22, 2016:
Background: Historically, strategies to eliminate bullying and create respectful, civil, supportive, and safe environments have largely centered on individuals, while ignoring the broader context of its occurrence that includes influences from interpersonal, community, environmental and policy sources. Theory and research establishes bullying as a complex interplay of influences between individuals and their broader environments. Bullying is a group phenomenon, reciprocally influenced by the individual, peers, the immediate environment/institution, community and/or society. Human behaviors are not isolated events; they are linked with and influenced by other behaviors and social norms. Evidence suggests organizational factors …

Book Review Of: Harvard Business Review's 10 Must Reads: On Leadership, Nadya Chishty-Mujahid
Business Review
It is eminently refreshing to have a prestigious and elite institution such as Harvard University take the trouble to sift through numerous articles of past HBR issues and come up with a compendium that comes across as both engaging and useful. The HBR Press has done this for a number of sub-disciplines of the field of Management, such as ‘Strategy’ and ‘Change,’ for example. However, ‘Leadership’ in view of the challenges it poses can claim the honor of being in a league of its own. The compendium, in spite of its relatively short length, manages to cover a staggering variety …

A Comparison Of Managerial And Leadership Effectiveness Of Veteran And Civilian Developed Leaders In A Civilian Context, John C. Dexter
Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations
Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, there has been an increase in American patriotism that has facilitated a strong commitment of U.S. employers to actively recruit and hire military veterans. These highly publicized employer veteran hiring commitments easily number in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions. However, the commitments to employ veterans does not specify how these veterans will be employed. In fact, there is wide-spread difficulty in translating military training and experience to civilian applications, and there is virtually no empirical support as to whether veterans will be more of less successful in civilian employment than …

The Effects Of Is-Bao Implementation And Leadership Performance On Safety Culture In Business Aviation Flight Operations, Christopher Mark Broyhill
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The International Standard, Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO), with a Safety Management System (SMS) as its core element, has been widely accepted by both the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the business aviation industry as the mechanism to create a healthy safety culture among the business aviation operators who have implemented the standard. Scholarly literature, however, has presented leadership as the most important factor in the creation and management of a healthy safety culture in organizations in general and aviation organizations in particular. This study examined and compared the effects of IS-BAO progression and leadership performance on the perceptions of …
