Removing Barriers To Create Sustainable Leaders In Extension: The Odyssey Of Leadership Development, Lauren Griffeth, Joel Burnsed
Removing Barriers To Create Sustainable Leaders In Extension: The Odyssey Of Leadership Development, Lauren Griffeth, Joel Burnsed
Journal of Extension
Leadership development programs are an exploratory journey that develop Extension faculty to better themselves in service to the organization. In an effort to mitigate potential barriers for participants, it is imperative that organizations work to create conditions conducive for success. We posit barriers for extension professionals include, participants having a fixed-mindset (Dweck, 2016), time constraints (Lindle, 2015; McAlearney, 2006), and the employee burnout epidemic (Fisher, 2018; Seppala & Moeller, 2021). Proactively working against common negative influences, sets up leadership program participants to become more fully immersed in learning and subsequently have a better chance for a positive behavior change.

Building Extension Professional’S Capacity To Engage Volunteers: Evaluation Of The Developmental Stages Of An Extension Professional Model, Kandi O'Neil, Rachelle Vettern, Rebecca Harrington, Sarah Maass, Patricia Mcglaughlin, Josset S. Gauley
Journal of Extension
The Developmental Stages of an Extension Professional (DSEP) model depicts how professionals can move through the stages of service, education, management, and leadership to build volunteer and program capacity. It encourages Extension professionals to assess the situation and adjust their leadership style.
Researchers used a mixed methods approach to assess Dr. James Rutledge’s DSEP model. Findings confirmed training Extension professionals in the DSEP model throughout the Achieving the Extension Mission through Volunteers course led to positive behavior change when working with volunteers. Extension needs to train professionals and utilize the DSEP model to build program capacity through volunteer engagement.

Addressing health disparities through community engagement and interprofessional partnerships is increasingly critical. However, learner-led approaches that integrate medical students, resident physicians, and social work students are not well-studied. We designed a learner-led, interprofessional, public health campaign for a majority Hispanic community, with the goals of building interprofessional leadership skills, engaging learners to address COVID-19 inequities, and disseminating lessons learned. Faculty and students from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Schools of Medicine and Social Work partnered with community leaders to pilot an interprofessional project supported by the American Association of Medical Colleges’ Nurturing Experiences for Tomorrow’s Community Leaders (AAMC …

Preparing Baccalaureate Nursing Students To Be Microsystem Leaders, Chito Arcos Belchez, David Martin
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Monday, September 19, 2016:
Historically leadership courses developed for undergraduate nursing education programs have focused on identifying personal skills deemed essential for students. These skills primarily relate to personal traits and qualities that identify students' self-knowledge, communication skills, risk taking, and delegation. What is lacking is the concept and components of system leadership. Knowledge of system leadership helps nurses identify the structures, processes, and outcomes present in a clinical microsystem. Strong clinical microsystems are the precursor of a healthy work environment. In a clinical microsystem leadership course, there are three main concepts. Those are leadership, microsystem, and …

Service Leadership: The Role Of Supervision In Advanced Nursing Practice, Renee Simone
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Monday, September 19, 2016:
Significant attention in research and education has been paid to the importance of leadership in nursing, especially for the developing role of the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)/Nurse Practitioner (NP) (Metzger & Rivers, 2014; Severinsson, Johansson & Lindquist, 2014; Dale et al., 2013; Taylor, 2013; Queiros, 2014). Supervision as one aspect of leadership has been linked primarily with managerial responsibilities and mentorship for new nurses (Moked & Crach-Zahavy, 2016). Efforts have been made to capture and quantify both the harmful sequelae of unsupportive supervisory relationships on staff and positive behaviors among managers and …

Previous studies examining predictors of mentoring benefits among pediatric staff nurse protegees representing healthcare organizations across 26 states demonstrated that protegee perception of quality was the single best predictor of mentoring benefits. The ability to identify the mentoring practices that predict specific benefits for individual nurses provides a better understanding of how mentoring relationships can be leveraged within health care organizations to promote the mutual benefits of mentoring. The primary aim of the study was to determine if mentoring practices predict mentoring benefits. In addition, the researchers were interested in exploring the relationship between the subscales of mentoring practices and …

An at-large chapter of STTI may be established when smaller schools of nursing or those within close proximity to one another find it advantageous to draw on the larger membership resources of a merged chapter. Such is the case in San Diego where the Zeta-Mu chapter at the University of San Diego (USD), originally chartered in 1982, joined with honor society members at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) to establish the Zeta Mu Chapter-At-Large in 1993. While establishing an at-large chapter is not difficult, the leadership of a …
