Self-Other Differences And Perceived Effectiveness: A Look Across Culture Dimensions, Nathalie Castano
Self-Other Differences And Perceived Effectiveness: A Look Across Culture Dimensions, Nathalie Castano
Wayne State University Dissertations
The use of 360-degree feedback is prominent across the world. Several studies have in-vestigated the impact of culture on different aspects of 360-degree feedback, such as self-other agreement, but very few have studied how ratings on these instruments predict perceptions of leadership effectiveness, and whether this relationship is the same across different societies. The present study seeks to narrow the gap between cross-cultural research and 360-degree feedback, by (a) investigating the role that culture plays on the self-other agreement and effectiveness relationship from a culture dimension perspective and (b) comparing how different cultural aspects help explain this relationship. As barriers …

Peer Mediation In Massachusetts Public Middle & High Schools: Perceptions Of Educators, Eve I. Noss
Doctoral Dissertations
While many studies related to school violence and its prevention have focused on the perceptions of elementary students and counselors, there is a dearth of research studies that focus on the perceptions of administrators and teachers. This study examines Massachusetts public middle and high school principals, assistant principals, and teachers (n=135), from 30 schools, perceptions of their peer mediation program's impact on student conflicts. Comparisons between administrators and between levels of schools were conducted to provide a finer grain for the analysis.

A Personal And Collaborative Journey Of Change: Lessons Learned About Leadership, Mentoring And Motivation From An Educational Community's Work With Donald Graves, Barbara Plummer Jasinski
Doctoral Dissertations
Change is often expected as the logical outcome of large scale investments in professional development, yet research studies (e.g., Tyack & Cuban, 1995; Lipson, Mosenthal & Woodside-Jiron, 2000; Schraw & Olafson, 2002) note wide variations in instructional practice despite such efforts. This qualitative inquiry was designed to understand factors that support or undermine teacher learning and to examine how change in instructional practices took hold for members of one school community exposed to radically different thinking about the teaching of writing. The participants were teachers and an administrator who collaborated with Donald Graves in Atkinson, New Hampshire during his groundbreaking …

When one is a middle manager—someone who is not entirely on the front lines, but supervising without the authority to make changes at a system or institutional level—especially as a new professional with lots of enthusiasm and ideas, one can feel frustrated and stuck in a state of stasis. By learning how to effectively leverage the power one does have, as Niccolo Machiavelli did, one can lead from the middle to inspire subordinates, excel as an employee, and create change at the system/institutional level.

Whether our interest is business, government. education, or almost any other entity that organizes humans in some way, it seems that we are perpetually in need of more individuals who can lead organizations effectively. But we also live in an era when we need institutions - i.e., the organizations that have formed, and that we have formed, to regulate and improve our lives - that are willing and able to be led. I have long felt, and have been heard to say from time to time, that "the dean can cause problems all by himself, but the dean by himself …

Much was at stake in the Presidential election of 2012, which was marked by heated debate over the trajectory of the economy, the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, and the fat of the President's health care plan. The candidates disagreed about nearly every issue from foreign policy and the war on terror to a woman's right to choose and same-sex marriage. Lost amid the din and never mentioned in the Presidential debates or most of the campaign speeches was another divisive topic: how our environmental laws and policies should address global climate change and chart a sustainable future for …

Paralinguistic Cues And Their Effect On Leader Credibility, Monte Brian Reid
Paralinguistic Cues And Their Effect On Leader Credibility, Monte Brian Reid
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Paralinguistic cues are powerful non-verbal communication elements that have the ability to make even good news sound horrible or bad news more palatable. Drawing upon the hermeneutical phenomenology communication theory of Dilthey (1961) and Shannon’s (1949) communication channel model, this thesis targeted the six primary paralinguistic cues of fluidity, articulation, sonority, tempo, emotion, and dynamic intensity to discover how these cues interact and affect the credibility and palatability of a leader’s message. To facilitate remembrance of these cues, the acronym F.A.S.T.E.D. was coined and used. Three different groups consisting of managers, non-managers, and media and public relations professionals were surveyed …

Empathy During Times Of Crisis And Corporate Reputation, Ann T. Gallagher
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
How an organization responds to victims is central to crisis communication management and protecting organizational reputation. While there is significant literature about best practices for crisis response, one area which has not been explored is the relationship of empathic communication and corporate reputation during times of conflict. This study examined this relationship through a study of the British Petroleum Gulf Oil crisis of 2010. The qualitative study used focus groups with working professionals and personal interviews with communication experts. The research is grounded in Coombs’ (1998) Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT), and Benoit’s (1977) image restoration theory, which is used …
The Effectiveness Of Social Media In Advancing Transformational Change, Kenneth Wesley Dey
The Effectiveness Of Social Media In Advancing Transformational Change, Kenneth Wesley Dey
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
The goal of this study is to determine the effectiveness of social media in advancing transformational change. Successfully implementing transformational change in an organization is heavily dependent on the support of key stakeholders. But engaging those stakeholders requires effective communication. Transformational efforts often fail because of the lack of credible communication or a failure to define a vision that can be easily communicated (Kotter, 2007). Researchers say that the key to successful transformational change is embracing a communication based in the realm of conversation where there is genuine two-way dialogue that is focused on listening and probing for more information …

The Intrapersonal Phenomenon: The Interactional Effects Of Intrapersonal Adjustments In The Organizational Change Of A Small Business, Jennifer Wilkes
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
It is inevitable that change involves varying levels of communication. A relationship may consist of an individual's communication with one's self or with one or more persons. The functionality of a relationship depends on the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the communication of those individuals involved. When change is necessary in any form of organization, the level of communication for each member plays a vital role, especially in a small company. Based on literature and theory, intrapersonal development and influence relies on the structure of one's cultural language. Language structure shapes one's inner speech and self-talk through processes of internalization. The …

In this article we present a case study of undergraduate students’ experiences in several leadership programs at Bryn Mawr College. Through a collaborative action research study, we identified three interrelated sets of practices in which student participants engage: discerning differences and bringing those differences into dialogue; revising their sense of themselves and becoming more serious students; and revising leadership relationships and creating community. We offer this study as an illustration of and commentary on Baxter Magolda’s theory of self-authorship and students’ development as leaders for social change — an illustration that highlights the close connection between self-development and leadership development.

Ideas have consequences—for good or bad. The apostle Paul, in his letter to a group of Romans, stated that the metaphysical world could be known to humanity (Rom 1:18ff). Over 1,800 years later, Emanuel Kant, a German philosopher, challenged this view of the metaphysical world; that is, Kant claimed that God could not be known, and western Christian philosophy has scrambled ever since to make sense of the two.1 On a similar scale, Howard Gardner, professor at Harvard University, challenged the prevailing view of intelligence in 1983 with his book Frames of Mind, stating that there were a number of …
