Paraíso Perdido, Paraíso Inventado. La Idealización Del Paraíso En La Literatura Latinoamericana: Un Comentario A Manera De Observaciones, William Martínez

World Languages and Cultures

This essay attempts to present a commentary about the notion of paradise in Latin America, as a whole, with a quick review of literature produced in the last 500 years. The image of paradise arises with Columbus' arrival in the Caribbean. In his letters to the Spanish Crown, Columbus creates the myth of paradise in the Caribbean, an image that never existed and, yet, still appears today within Latin American Literature. In several literary periods the image is re-invented and transformed. The essay deals with the evolution of the notions of paradise, questioning, at the end, a possible future regarding …

Exploring Women’S Representation In The Parliaments Of Latin America, Elizabeth A. Dennis '07 Jan 2007

Exploring Women’S Representation In The Parliaments Of Latin America, Elizabeth A. Dennis '07

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

The existing literature on women in politics has made it abundantly clear that women around the world are facing structural, cultural, and socioeconomic barriers to power in both the public and private spheres. Yet, despite these common obstacles women in some countries fare better than others. Within Latin America, an otherwise fairly homogenous region, there exists a large variation in the percent women’s representation in the national single or lower houses, from 6.7% (Belize) to 38.6% (Costa Rica). Possible hypotheses for this spread will be tested using data from the Latinobarómetro Survey, UNESCO, the Quota Project, and the Inter-parliamentary Union. …

A Tale Of Two Priests And Two Struggles: Liberation Theology From Dictatorship To Democracy In The Brazilian Northeast, Jan Hoffman French Jan 2007

A Tale Of Two Priests And Two Struggles: Liberation Theology From Dictatorship To Democracy In The Brazilian Northeast, Jan Hoffman French

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Land for the landless, food for the hungry, literacy for the uneducated— not through charitable works, but by forcing the state to take seriously its responsibilities to its poorest citizens. This was integral to the theology of liberation as it was practiced by bishops, priests, and nuns in Brazil beginning shortly after the close of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. Important sectors of the Brazilian Catholic Church were “opting for the poor” at a time when economic development, modernization, and democracy were not considered appropriate or meaningful partners in the repressive environment characterized by the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985).

Small Farmers And The Agro-Industrial Production And Services Cooperative Of Coronel Oviedo: Opportunities For Growth, Tara Farnan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between a group of campesinos and a Cooperative in Coronel Oviedo, Paraguay that were undergoing a debt default crisis. I spoke individually with small farmers and staff members about their experiences working with the Cooperative and their opinions about the future of the organization. Their responses grouped into themes that suggested ways to improve the relationship between farmers and their Cooperative as well as improve farmer involvement in the Cooperative. Based on recent scholarship in effective agricultural extension methods and rural development, I saw three main opportunities for the Cooperative to improve its relationship with …

Soft Power And Hard Power Approaches In U.S. Foreign Policy: A Case Study Comparison In Latin America, John Weinbrenner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of soft power versus hard power in U.S. policy towards Latin America. In recent years America's unipolar moment has been challenged from populist leaders in the region to its inability to get a handle on the flow of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs that reach its shores. This thesis is a step to understanding the difference between power and influence as well as the effects of hard power and soft power in U.S. foreign policy. A historical comparative case study analysis has been conducted utilizing the cases of FDR's Good …

Redefining Civilization: Historical Polarities And Mythologizing In Los Con Quistadores Of Pablo Neruda's Canto General, Mark J. Mascia Jan 2007

Redefining Civilization: Historical Polarities And Mythologizing In Los Con Quistadores Of Pablo Neruda's Canto General, Mark J. Mascia

Languages Faculty Publications

The article analyzes the book Canto General, by Pablo Neruda.

Pablo Neruda's poetic history of Latin America, Canto General (1950), is perhaps best known for its lyricized defense of oppressed and subjugated peoples throughout Latin America, as the author had perceived them. This collection, organized into fifteen sections (often, though not always, linear in its chronicling of Latin American history), treats this social theme from Pre-Columbian times through the mid-Twentieth Century. In addition, the collection is clearly infused with a profoundly Marxist ideology, as well as a call to arms against powers which Neruda had perceived as aggressors, namely …

The Urban Development Of Spanish Colonial Pensacola, 1781-1821, Harry James Wilson Jan 2007

The Urban Development Of Spanish Colonial Pensacola, 1781-1821, Harry James Wilson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Pensacola evolved through the second Spanish period (1781-1821) from a fledgling military outpost to an increasingly complex urban center. Local and regional demographic trends and environmental conditions prompted Pensacola to grow in a manner that differed from other Spanish colonial urban centers and created in Pensacola an unusual class structure and residential patterning. The primary goal of this dissertation is to show that Pensacola’s residential and landowning patterns never experienced the degree of socioeconomic residential clustering noted in other Spanish colonial urban centers. Social residential clustering was unusual in Spanish Pensacola, and socioeconomic classes and land values varied from lot …

The Latin American Consensus, Amanda Miralrio Jan 2007

The Latin American Consensus, Amanda Miralrio

McNair Scholars Journal

Anti-Americanism has reached an unsettling global high that has been manifested in everything from opinion polls to violent protests. Latin America is geopolitically important to the United States, while harboring anti-American sentiment. The history of U.S.-Latin America relations and the most recent public opinion polls are analyzed to unearth the roots of regional anti-Americanism. Two case studies include a country notorious for its blatant anti-Americanism (Venezuela) and a country traditionally allied with the United States (Mexico). Despite different political or historical relations with the United States, Latin American countries have come to an anti-American consensus.

Energy [R]Evolution: A Sustainable Latin American Energy Outlook, Sven Teske, Arthouros Zervos, Oliver Schãfer

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

This publication provides stimulating analysis on future scenarios of energy use, which focus on a range of technologies that are expected to emerge in the coming years and decades. There is now universal recognition of the fact that new technologies and much greater use of some that already exist provide the most hopeful prospects for mitigation of emissions of GHGs. It is for this reason that the International Energy Agency, which in the past pursued an approach based on a single time path of energy demand and supply, has now developed alternative scenarios that incorporate future technological changes. In the Fourth …

This essay is a contribution to the discussion of the conflict that often exists between legal norms and legal practice in Latin America. It examines the conflict between equality under the law as a legal and constitutional norm in Latin America and the persistence of strong inequality as a social reality in Latin America. The essay examines this tension through a look at recent Latin American legal historiography. Essays include issues of race, class and the law in the nineteenth century Brazilian Empire, race and the law in early 20th century Cuba and Brazilian labor law in the middle and …

The Lost Sheep: Experiences Of Religious Gay Men In Havana, Cuba, Michael Maher Jr Jan 2007

The Lost Sheep: Experiences Of Religious Gay Men In Havana, Cuba, Michael Maher Jr

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

The focus of the article is interviews with ten religious gay men in Havana. Interviews were conducted in 1999 and 2000. The men were from Catholic, Santeria, Protestant, and Pentecostal backgrounds. Common perceptions were that Santeria was the most welcoming religion to gays and that Pentecostalism was the least welcoming to gays. While many non-Catholics viewed the Catholic Church as welcoming, the gay Catholics in the study did not see the Church as welcoming, but they did tend to see it as more welcoming than Pentecostalism. Almost all the men in the study had come to reconcile their sexuality and …

Marbury In Mexico: Judicial Review’S Precocious Southern Migration, M C. Mirow Jan 2007

Marbury In Mexico: Judicial Review’S Precocious Southern Migration, M C. Mirow

Faculty Publications

In attempting to construct United States-style judicial review for the Mexican Supreme Court in the 1880s, Ignacio Vallarta, president of the court, read Marbury in a way that preceded this use of the case in the United States. Using this surprising fact as a central example, this article makes several important contributions to the field of comparative constitutional law. The work demonstrates that through constitutional migration, novel readings of constitutional sources can arise in foreign fora. In an era when the United States Supreme Court may be accused of parochialism in its constitutional analysis, the article addresses the current controversy …
