The Neoliberal Myth In Latin America: The Cases Of Mexico And Argentina In The ‘90s, Veronica Ronchi
The Neoliberal Myth In Latin America: The Cases Of Mexico And Argentina In The ‘90s, Veronica Ronchi
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
During the ‘90s most Latin American countries were submitted to neoliberal structural reform policies. Neoliberal policies imposed market supremacy, reduced the State’s role in the economy and deregulated the markets. This paper aims at describing how these policies affected the most important macroeconomic indexes, with special emphasis on Argentina and Mexico, the two countries that suffered most from the economic crises of the ‘80s and ‘90s, and where the neoliberal policies were applied with greater orthodoxy. In spite of a slight improvement in some macroeconomic indexes, in Latin America neoliberalism failed to reduce poverty and unemployment, and was unable to …

Trend Or Anomaly? Structural Adjustment Policies And The New Latin American Left, Natalia Espejo
Trend Or Anomaly? Structural Adjustment Policies And The New Latin American Left, Natalia Espejo
Political Science Honors Projects
This paper explores Latin America's history of neoliberalism as it affects the rise of left leaning governments in the region. By looking specifically at Argentina, Venezuela, Bolivia and Brazil, I argue that the failure of structural adjustment policies creates a space in which leftist executives can democratically attain power. This represents an ideological departure from what has been a sustained period of conservatism in Latin America. Moreover, by considering patterns of institutional weakness, my research also explains the moderate to radical variation that characterizes the new Latin American left.

China And Latin America: A Match Made In Trade Heaven Or Dependency Reloaded?, Meghan Skira
Senior Honors Projects
China’s economy is expanding rapidly, and the emerging powerhouse is searching for energy resources, raw materials, and markets to maintain its economic growth. China has shown an insatiable appetite for Latin American natural resources, commodities, and agricultural products, from oil to lumber to copper to soybeans. Trade values between the two regions increased greatly from $1.3 billion in 1980 to about $13 billion in 2000 to over $50 billion in 2005. Latin America has the raw materials that China needs to fuel its economic expansion and offers a large market for cheap Chinese manufactured goods. Many analysts claim that Sino-Latin …

Desiring Nation: Prostitution, Citizenship, And Modernity In Cuba, 1840-1920, Tiffany A. Thomas-Woodward
History ETDs
This dissertation uses prostitution as a lens through which to study the intersection of gender, sexuality, and nation-building in late colonial and early republic Cuba. Between 1840 and 1920, Cuba underwent a series of profound transformations spurred by the abolition of slavery, national wars of independence, mass migration, and foreign occupation. My investigation of Spanish, Cuban, and U.S. sources reveal that as Cubans struggled to define a sense of national identity in the face of changing political alliances and shifting populations, prostitution became a focus for the expression of contemporary social and sexual anxieties. State policies, designed to control prostitutes' …
