The Inter–American Court of Human Rights recently declared the existence of a jus cogens right to a healthy environment: could it lawfully reach the same conclusion regarding a right to abortion? This paper examines constitutional law and constitutional jurisprudence on abortion in Latin American and Caribbean countries to determine whether a regional consensus exists on abortion rights in the region. The paper looks at landmark abortion decisions favoring abortion rights in Colombia and Mexico, as well as broad abortion decriminalization through statutory reform in Argentina, Uruguay, Haiti and Cuba. Genetic services are expanding globally, but access remains limited in low-resource regions such as Latin America. Understanding current service availability, barriers, and facilitators is critical to guide capacity building and improve patient care. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of healthcare professionals providing genetic services in Latin America. The survey, available in Spanish and English, assessed genetic services, referral patterns, testing availability, barriers, facilitators, and perceived needs. Descriptive statistics summarized quantitative data, and thematic analysis was applied to open-ended responses. This paper studies trust, reciprocity, and bargaining using a large-scale online experiment conducted in six Latin American countries. Participants played trust and ultimatum games under randomly assigned conditions in which the gender of their counterpart was either disclosed or withheld. On average, disclosing counterpart gender does not yield statistically detectable effects in either game. However, statistically significant differences emerge by participants' own gender: on average men exhibit higher levels of trust, reciprocity, and generosity in bargaining than women. When disaggregating by participant-counterpart gender pairings, point estimates differ in sign across groups but are generally imprecisely estimated, and differences between interacting …

Non-communicable diseases like hypertension cause substantial morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries, where limited access to high-quality care contributes to millions of preventable deaths annually. Traditional assessments of health system performance often rely on structural indicators and cross-sectional, overlooking patient experiences and care processes. In Latin America, amid rising cardiovascular disease, longitudinal tools are needed to guide improvements in healthcare delivery models, particularly for chronic diseases such as hypertension. Shared leadership involves a collective effort where multiple identities, perspectives, skills, and experiences are incorporated into relational and decision-making processes. As such, we argue that diversity is a critical consideration in the presence of shared leadership. Specifically, we argue that socioeconomic diversity is an important consideration when engaging in collective forms of leadership; nevertheless, organizational research has yet to adequately understand shared leadership in this context. This research explores the motivations behind the denial of the 1981 El Mozote Massacre in El Salvador. In this event, the US-backed Atlácatl battalion of the Salvadoran Army brutally killed over 500 Indigenous peoples in the department of Morazán. Despite multiple eyewitness accounts of the massacre, both the United States and Salvadoran governments repeatedly denied responsibility for the event.

This study analyzes the Growth Rate behavior Demographic (TDC) of the countries Latin Americans during the period 1961–2023 through Methods Multivariate Functional and Neutrosophic TOPSIS. The techniques descriptive, grouping functional and display using Functional Biplot allowed identify curves of countries with behavior atypical (Venezuela, Uruguay, Honduras) and group countries with patterns similar in different points in the period studied. This paper presents findings from a global study of nonprofit data accessibility, focusing on Mexico and other Latin American countries. The analysis explores whether nonprofit databases exist, who operates them, what accessibility barriers are present, what requirements nonprofits must meet to register, and what registration costs they face. Using an exploratory comparative design, the study highlights both cross-country similarities and differences while situating nonprofit data systems within broader theories of transparency, accountability, and open-data governance.

Background: Before Zika virus (ZIKV) infections were observed in the Americas, an association between ZIKV and microcephaly or other congenital malformations was not well documented. Initial reports suggested strong associations between ZIKV and congenital malformations, but plausible estimates of causal effects from prospective studies with adequate sample size and covariate data were few.

Methods: From 2016-2018, the Zika in Infants and Pregnancy (ZIP) study enrolled pregnant people before 18 weeks gestation or with confirmed symptomatic ZIKV in a prospective cohort across 10 sites in South and Central America, and in Puerto Rico. AIMS: The aim of the study was to identify the barriers and facilitators to healthcare access for people with Parkinson's disease (PWP) in Spanish-speaking Latin American countries (LAC) in Central and South America, to understand their drivers and consider the implications for health systems in LAC.

METHODS: Four online semi-structured focus groups were conducted with 25 PWP who provide education and/or support to PWP. The study was designed and implemented by a person with lived experience of PD. Data were mapped to an existing model of access to healthcare that incorporates provider and consumer abilities.

Utilizing a systematic literature review of 58 articles (2015-2022) and a multineutrosophic analysis approach employing the ARAS method, the research aims to identify and prioritize strategic guidelines for promoting female participation while accounting for inherent uncertainty and multiple perspectives. The methodology integrates diverse expert opinions to provide a robust framework for decision-making. Contemporary self-construal research indicates that people define themselves either as independent or interdependent. We review self-construal scales across the United States, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East to compare/contrast their operationalizations of interdependence (or independence). Taken together, this body of research suggests that, consistent with findings on American and East Asian selves, Southeast Asian cultures also exhibit interdependent self-construal. Latin Americans, however, display independent self-construal despite their long-standing characterization as a collectivist culture, while Arabs display both independence and interdependence. Future directions—including the improved validity of multidimensional measures of the self over dichotomous scales, cultural differences …

Despite making up 14% of the US population, little research has been done on pay gaps for immigrants, the majority of whom are Latin American immigrants. I analyze the effect of immigration on immigrants’ wages, specifically looking at the effects of region of birth, citizenship, and state immigration policies. I find that even when compared to natives with similar education, Latin American immigrants earn significantly less. Furthermore, while noncitizens earn less than natives and naturalized citizens earn more overall, Latin Americans face a larger penalty for noncitizenship and lower returns to citizenship. The concept of a sociedad in Latin America has undergone profound changes throughout this century. Following the example set by the French Code de commerce of 1807, the sociedad was initially viewed as a contractual arrangement between two or more partners who make contributions to a business for purposes of sharing in the resulting profit or loss, wherein a plurality of partners was an intrinsic component. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of all types of glaucoma in Latin America (LATAM) and evaluate potential demographic associations. This study followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024506330). A comprehensive search of PubMed, SciELO, and Web of Science was conducted to identify population-based or cross-sectional studies reporting glaucoma prevalence in LATAM. Studies were categorized into two groups: Group 1 included general population studies without selection based on visual acuity (VA), and Group 2 included studies limited to individuals with VA < 20/60. Data from five studies in Group 1 (25,288 individuals) and eight studies in Group 2 (29,882 individuals) were analyzed using R software. The pooled prevalence of glaucoma was 4% (95% CI: 1–3%) in Group 1 and 1% (95% CI: 0–1%) in Group 2. No statistically significant associations were found between glaucoma prevalence and sex (p = 0.08) or age (p = 0.5669). Although our findings …

Psychiatric disorders are highly heritable and polygenic, influenced by environmental factors and often comorbid. Large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs) through consortium efforts have identified genetic risk loci and revealed the underlying biology of psychiatric disorders and traits. However, over 85% of psychiatric GWAS participants are of European ancestry, limiting the applicability of these findings to non-European populations. Latin America and the Caribbean, regions marked by diverse genetic admixture, distinct environments and healthcare disparities, remain critically understudied in psychiatric genomics.
