How Is China Changing Latin America's Energy Sector?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
How Is China Changing Latin America's Energy Sector?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
China recently announced several loans worth billions of dollars to Ecuador and Venezuela—to be paid back largely in the form of oil—for public works, energy and infrastructure projects. These investments and others have made China the biggest credit source for the two governments, often on terms that other financial institutions would spurn, analysts have pointed out. Are China's big loans going to be good deals for the Latin American countries? Will the money come through, and will it be used effectively for the intended purposes? Is China's increased investment in Ecuador, Venezuela and other countries in the region playing out …

What Is The Fate Of Chile's Hidroaysén Project?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
What Is The Fate Of Chile's Hidroaysén Project?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
A court ruling in Chile on June 20 suspended the controversial HidroAysén project, a proposed plan to dam two rivers and build five hydroelectric plants in Patagonia, The New York Times reported. While environmental groups hope that the ruling is the first step in canceling the dams, a lawyer for the project told local newspaper La Tercera that the ruling was ""purely formal"" and made no decision about the complex's legality. Does Chile's booming demand for energy outweigh the detriments of the project, as the government has claimed? Are there adequate alternatives to supply the necessary power for the country's …

Mormon Fertility In Latin America, Kiira Elizabeth Fox
Mormon Fertility In Latin America, Kiira Elizabeth Fox
Theses and Dissertations
While previous research has identified religion as an influence of fertility, how context changes the nature of that relationship remains little understood. Using census data from Brazil, Chile and Mexico, this study examines whether the high fertility pattern of one pronatalist, American-born religion (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) translates to the Latin American context. Results indicate that it does, but only inconsistently as the pronatalist pattern is masked by members' educational attainment and mixed religion marriages. When these attributes are accounted for LDS fertility is high in Latin America, especially among the more educated. This study highlights …
Hollywood's Other America: Neoliberalism, Us Hegemony, And The Construction Of An Imaginative Geography Of The Americas In Contemporary Us Film, Brent Smith
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis explores the production of Latin America as a space in Hollywood films in the context of neoliberal hegemony and the shifting power relations of late capitalist globalization. Drawing on Edward Said's notion of 'imaginative geographies' I examine the way in which Hollywood representations of Latin America have constructed a spatio-temporal imaginative geography of the Americas that structures US knowledge of Latin America, arguing that these representations form part of a neocolonial discourse that legitimates neoliberal economic expansion and direct US military or political intervention in Latin America. In contemporary US film, this geographic imaginary is produced through representations …
The Icsid Effect? Considering Potential Variations In Arbitration Awards, Susan D. Franck
The Icsid Effect? Considering Potential Variations In Arbitration Awards, Susan D. Franck
Scholarly Articles
The legitimacy of the World Bank's dispute resolution body - The International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) - is a matter of heated debate. Some states have alleged that ICSID is biased, withdrawn from the ICSID Convention, and advocated creating alternative arbitration systems. Using pre-2007 archival data of the population of then- known arbitration awards, this Article quantitatively assesses whether ICSID arbitration awards were substantially different from arbitration awards rendered in other forums. The Article examines variation in the amounts claimed and outcomes reached to evaluate indicators of bias. The results indicated that there was no reliable …
Is The Region Capable Of Meeting Increased Electricity Demand?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Is The Region Capable Of Meeting Increased Electricity Demand?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
Brazil's Säo Paulo state has suffered several major power failures this year, while the Venezuelan government has enacted rationing measures and begun importing electricity from Colombia. Meanwhile, Argentina's electricity consumption in May grew by 7.8 percent over the year prior, and the Chilean government has repeatedly said it will need to double its electricity generation capacity in the next 10 to 15 years. As Latin American economies continue to grow, how capable are they of meeting electricity demand? Are power shortages likely to hamper growth and, if so, where? What role should the state play in developing the power sector, …

State-Run Oil Company Pemex Announces Discovery Of 'Significant' Natural-Gas Reserve In Deep Waters Of Gulf Of Mexico, Carlos Navarro
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
In late May, the state-run oil company PEMEX announced the discovery of what it considers a "significant" reserve of natural gas in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. While the size of the reserve was impressive, some analysts pointed out that low prices, high extraction costs, and an uncertain global market for natural gas take some of the luster off the discovery. The natural gas was discovered while PEMEX was exploring for new supplies of crude oil at the Piklis-1 well, which, at a depth of 5.4 km, is the deepest that PEMEX has drilled to date. The reserve …
