Solar Energy Seen As A Viable Alternative In Mexico, Carlos Navarro
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
Mexico is beginning to take a closer look at solar power as a way to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and meet the growth in demand for electricity, which is expected to increase by an average of about 1,800 megawatts annually over the next 15 years. Meanwhile, the alarming rate of loss of Paraguay's Chaco Forest has also recently made headlines. What role should the state play in regulating land usage? How can Latin American governments balance preservation of …

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
More than 1,500 indigenous protesters last month brought Ecuador's capital city to a ""standstill"" over government plans to exploit natural resources in the Amazon region. The group alleges that President Rafael Correa has capitulated to free-market forces with policies opening up lands to mining and drilling that could ravage the Amazonian rainforest, while the administration counters that such measures are necessary for the country's economic development. How well is Correa handling discontent over natural resource extraction? Are such protests likely to hinder investment and development of the country's oil sector? What should both sides be doing differently to resolve these …

Cuba's Sugar Industry Tries To Recover After Production Falls To Century-Old Levels, Daniel Vázquez
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
The Cuban sugar crop is being harvested, and a new management system is being put to the test. This model required the end of the historic Ministerio de Azúcar (MINAZ) last September to reduce bureaucratic organizations, modernize technology, and enhance business administration after production fell to 1.1 million tons in 2010, comparable to 1905. The industry, which produced more than 8 million tons of sugar in 1990, now faces disruptions because of equipment breakdowns as well as antiquated machinery in sugar mills built before 1959 when Fidel Castro took power on the island. The official target for the 2012 harvest …
