Is Latin America's Energy Sector Looking Up Or Down?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor Jun 2012

Is Latin America's Energy Sector Looking Up Or Down?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

Given the potential of significant oil reserves in Brazil and Venezuela, large shale gas discoveries, plummeting wind energy prices and other developments, some analysts are highly optimistic about the general energy outlook in Latin America. Others cite opposition to hydro projects, vulnerabilities in energy-poor parts of the region, stagnation of oil production, unproved ultra-deep-water technologies and other hurdles as cause for major concern about the region's energy future. Are reasons for optimism weak? Or are pessimists underestimating the region's potential? What are the major trends in regional energy issues that we can expect in the period ahead, and how can …

Will Peña Nieto Be Able To Win Support For Energy Reform?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

Mexican President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto has said that reforming the state-run energy sector will be his ""signature issue"" and that he aims to refashion Pemex in the image of Brazil's Petrobras, Bloomberg News reported. However, the Institutional Revolutionary Party fell short of an outright majority in the country's Congress and energy reform has proven to be elusive in the past. Will Peña Nieto be successful in his bid to reform Pemex? What changes will he try to implement and what challenges is he likely to face in getting them passed?

El Salvador's Government Sends General Water Law Into Legislative Pipeline, Benjamin Witte-Lebhar May 2012

El Salvador's Government Sends General Water Law Into Legislative Pipeline, Benjamin Witte-Lebhar

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

For the million or so residents of greater San Salvador whose faucets run dry on a regular basis, the message they received in late April from the Administración de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (ANDA) was a familiar one: "It's going to be a while." Because of technical problems, the pumping station that supplies those homes is only operating at about half capacity right now, according to ANDA, El Salvador's state water regulator. Las Parvas, as the plant is called, draws water from the Río Lempa, El Salvador's largest river, and supplies between 45% and 60% of greater San Salvador's drinking water. …

First Presidential Debate Marked By Attacks On Front-Runner Enrique Peña Nieto, Carlos Navarro

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

The four candidates seeking to become the next president of Mexico squared off in an uninspiring and sometimes confusing debate marked by attacks and disqualifications. "Three of the four candidates seeking the presidency in the July 1 election interacted in a disorderly and perhaps schizophrenic manner," said the Coahuilabased daily newspaper Vanguardia. "They mixed criticisms with promises that have already been heard for the last few months in advertisements and interviews." However, Gabriel Quadri de la Torre, candidate of the PANAL party, stood out from the other three candidates, specifically on the topic of renewable energy policy.

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

On April 16, the administration of Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner decided that the state should retake control of its oil industry, transferred in the 1990s to the Spanish multinational Repsol. The executive sent Congress a bill proposing the expropriation of 51% of the oil company's shares. Before being acquired by the Spaniards, the company was known as Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF) and was then renamed Repsol YPF.

Organizational Citizenship Behavior, Collectivism, And Job Satisfaction: Evidence From Mexico, Miguel Angel Baeza May 2012

Organizational Citizenship Behavior, Collectivism, And Job Satisfaction: Evidence From Mexico, Miguel Angel Baeza

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The purpose of this dissertation was to conduct a field study in a Mexican company in several Mexican regions. This study considered administrative professionals as a continuation to assess the validity of a recently developed Mexican Border OCB (MBOCB) scale by Ortiz (2000). This validation/refinement of an MBOCB scale was accomplished by comparing and contrasting results of this investigation, given the name of Mexican OCB (MOCB), with other OCB dimensions studies in other regions in order to evaluate criterion validity (e.g., convergent and discriminat) through factor loadings. Furthermore, this dissertation categorized these MOCB dimensions into more conceptualized terms utilized by …

How Will Ypf's Nationalization Affect Argentina?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner on April 16 announced that the government was immediately taking control of the nation's largest oil producer, YPF, and sending legislation to Congress to seize Repsol's 51 percent stake in the company. Fernández's government has complained that YPF under-invested in Argentina and has sent too much oil, and profits, abroad. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy blasted Argentina's action, saying it lacked justification and was a 'negative decision for everyone.' Was the government justified in taking over YPF? How will the takeover affect investment in all sectors of Argentina's economy? How will the move affect …
