Social Policy And Redistribution: Chile And Uruguay, Jennifer Pribble, Evelyn Huber
Social Policy And Redistribution: Chile And Uruguay, Jennifer Pribble, Evelyn Huber
Political Science Faculty Publications
In this chapter we ask two questions: First, we ask whether these governments, exemplifying best-case scenarios in Latin America, have embarked on a viable path toward a sustainable social democratic welfare state. Second, we ask whether and why they differ in their approaches and progress on this path, paying close attention to how the parties' organizational characteristics influence this variation. In their introduction, Levitsky and Roberts classify the left parties in Chile and Uruguay as an "institutionalized partisan Left," distinguished between an "electoral-professional" Left and a "mass-organic" Left. Uruguay's FA is an example of a mass-organic left party, while Chile's …

In Chile, wounds from the Pinochet dictatorship of 1973 to 1990 still fester under the surface of its post-transitional society. The regime of terror lives on in economic policies, architecture, the country's grave-pocked landscape, and in the everyday lives of Chileans. My research examines a former prison and torture center that has been converted into a cultural park: a space of culture, art, and community, sanctioned and administered by the state. It serves as a microcosm for Chile, which has chosen to erase its violent past while also perpetuating a system of class stratification and power structures that come directly …

The Long, Lingering Shadow: Slavery, Race, And Law In The American Hemisphere (Introduction), Robert J. Cottrol
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This essay is the introduction to the recently published book, The Long, Lingering Shadow: Slavery, Race , and Law in the American Hemisphere (University of Georgia Press, 2013). Students of American history know of the law’s critical role in developing a system of racial hierarchy in the United States. The Long, Lingering Shadow shows that this history is best appreciated in a comparative perspective. The volume looks at the parallel legal histories of race relations in the United States, Brazil, and Spanish America. It takes the reader on a journey that begins with the origins of New World slavery in …

Women's Mobilization In Latin America: A Case Study Of Venezuela, Brianna Russell
Women's Mobilization In Latin America: A Case Study Of Venezuela, Brianna Russell
Master's Theses
Abstract
I examine the following elements in regards to women’s mobilization in Latin America and Venezuela from the late 1950s to the present: (a) the influence of the state and economy on times when women mobilized (b) class division within the movement (c) women’s demands during different time periods (d) the ways in which women were successful in working towards gender equality. This thesis reviews the literature on women’s mobilization in Latin America during the second half of the twentieth century. I find that women mobilized across class lines with the masses to end dictatorships. Women demobilized during transitions to …

This articles discusses the challenges and tensions encountered between indigenous and national systems of justice in Ecuador. The article highlights some of the major issues surrounding indigenous systems, namely, how crime should be dealt with, as well as how indigenous justice has been negatively portrayed in the media.
