Setting The Agenda: Asia And Latin America In The 21st Century, Ariel C. Armony

Latin America and Asia are among the world’s fastest growing regions. Trade between Asia and Latin American and Caribbean countries has risen dramatically in recent years. It is undeniable that Asia now plays a formidable role in the economic development of the region. This publication emerges out of the University of Miami’s 2012 “Asia and Latin America in the 21st Century” conference, where leaders from academic, policy, business, and media communities from around the world convened to address the macroeconomic trends, trade relations, and sociopolitical trends that have emerged as the links between Asia and Latin America strengthen. Bridging Prevention And Health: Exploring Community Perceptions Of Intimate Partner Violence In Rural Honduras, Javeed Sukhera, Catherine Cerulli, Barbara A. Gawinski, Diane Morse
Paediatrics Publications
This qualitative study rooted in community-based participatory research principles utilized semi-structured interviews with 2 focus groups (n = 9) with female healthcare volunteers (FCVs) and 3 male key informants who were community leaders (MCLs). The study aimed to examine how a rural Honduran community defines and responds to intimate partner violence (IPV) in order to lay the foundation for future interventions. Based on grounded theory, the authors assessed for common themes across transcripts. Authors found that a number of participants denied the existence of IPV. Perspectives on the causes and definitions of IPV varied between FCVs and MCLs. All participants …

Assessing Whether Oil Dependency In Venezuela Contributes To National Instability, Adam Kott
Journal of Strategic Security
The focus of this article is on what role, if any, oil has on Venezuela's instability. When trying to explain why a resource-rich country experiences slow or negative growth, experts often point to the resource curse. The following pages explore the traditional theory behind the resource curse as well as alternative perspectives to this theory such as ownership structure and the correlation between oil prices and democracy. This article also explores the various forms of instability within Venezuela and their causes. Finally, the article looks at President Hugo Chavez's political and economic policies as well as the stagnation of the …

"Mapuche Conflict" Flares Up In Chile's Araucanía Region, Benjamin Witte-Lebhar
"Mapuche Conflict" Flares Up In Chile's Araucanía Region, Benjamin Witte-Lebhar
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
A flurry of arson attacks, land occupations, and violent police raids have refocused public attention on Chile's longsimmering "Mapuche conflict," which is once again showing signs of boiling over. Sonamed for the involvement of ethnic Mapuches, Chile's largest indigenous group, the conflict also involves nonMapuche farmers and rural business magnates, as well as heavily armed carabineros [uniformed police], which maintain a constant presence in and around certain 'hotspot' communities in the Biobío and Araucanía regions. Fueling tensions are issues of poverty, land ownership, and racism.
