The Effects Of Semantics On The Attitude Differences Toward Mental And Physical Illness, Jeanne S. Sommer Jan 1996

The Effects Of Semantics On The Attitude Differences Toward Mental And Physical Illness, Jeanne S. Sommer

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two independent variables (label and semantic construction) were studied for their effects on the dependent variable of attitude. The independent variable of label had two conditions (mental vs. physical illness). The independent variable of semantic construction also had two levels (is vs. has). This resulted in a 2 x 2 factorial design. The different levels of the independent variables were combined to yield four conditions placed in vignette form; (1) "is mentally ill," (2) "has a mental illness," (3) "is physically ill," and (4) "has a physical illness." Vignettes were responded to on the Personal Attribute Inventory which consisted of …

An Investigation Into Attitudes Surrounding Facilitated Communication, Jessica N. Peregoy Dec 1995

An Investigation Into Attitudes Surrounding Facilitated Communication, Jessica N. Peregoy

Theses & Honors Papers

This qualitative study investigated facilitators' opinions regarding facilitated communication (FC). Six individuals who have experience and/or training in the use of this method were interviewed. Issues discussed included FC's effectiveness for individuals other than those with autism, training prior to using the method, need for modifications in the method, and validity of the communication arising from the use of FC. Recurring themes were constructed from comments made during the course of the interviews. Each theme was supported by comments made by at least half of the facilitators. These themes were dissatisfaction with formal training, application to other populations, acknowledgement of …

Neuro-Fuzzy Models For Classification And Rule Generation., Sushmita Mitra Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Machine recognition [1, 2] of patterns can be viewed as a two-fold task, consisting of learning the invariant and common properties of a set of samples characterizing a class, and of deciding a new sample as a possible member of the class by noting that it has properties common to those of the set of samples. In other words, pattern recognition by computers can be described as a transformation from the measurenment space M to the feature space F and finally to the decision space D (1), i.e., M ⟶F⟶D.Here, the mapping 6 : F⟶D is the decision function and …

Poetic Diction And Parallel Word Pairs In The Book Of Mormon, Kevin L. Barney Jul 1995

Poetic Diction And Parallel Word Pairs In The Book Of Mormon, Kevin L. Barney

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Hebrew poetry is based on various patterns of parallelism. Parallel lines are in turn created by the use of parallel words, that is, pairs of words bearing generally synonymous or antithetic meanings. Since the 1930s, scholars have come to realize that many of these “word pairs” were used repeatedly in a formulaic fashion as the basic building blocks of different parallel lines. The Book of Mormon reflects numerous parallel structures, including synonymous parallelism, antithetic parallelism, and chiasmus. As word pairs are a function of parallelism, the presence of such parallel structures in the Book of Mormon suggests the possible presence …

Criteria For Identifying And Evaluating The Presence Of Chiasmus, John W. Welch Jul 1995

Criteria For Identifying And Evaluating The Presence Of Chiasmus, John W. Welch

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

This article defines fifteen criteria one can use to measure the strength or weakness of a proposed chiastic pattern in a given text. The need for rigor in such studies depends primarily on how the results of the proposed structural analyses will be used. Ultimately, analysts may not know with certainty whether an author created inverted parallel structures intentionally or not; but by examining a text from various angles, one may assess the likelihood that an author consciously employed chiasmus to achieve specific literary purposes.

A Hermeneutic Study Of Theeducational Theories Of Willa Cather, Marie Hassett Mcdonough Jan 1995

A Hermeneutic Study Of Theeducational Theories Of Willa Cather, Marie Hassett Mcdonough

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The hermeneutic analysis conducted for this study suggests that five theories about AmericanEducation may be found in Willa Cather's work. First, she believed that the needs of the individual, not the society, should be the primary concerns of educators. Second, she shows us that the family and the community may play an important role in a learner's development, but cautions that the learner should not be seen as limited to the values and attitudes of the family and community. Third, she believed that Americans had developed a warped view ofEducation, confusing the memorization of facts about art, literature or philosophy …

The Pueblo Region As A Linguistic Area: Diffusion Among The Indigenous Languages Of The Southwest United States., Catherine Bereznak Jan 1995

The Pueblo Region As A Linguistic Area: Diffusion Among The Indigenous Languages Of The Southwest United States., Catherine Bereznak

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal of this dissertation is to investigate whether the Pueblo region of the Southwest United States is a legitimate linguistic area (LA). The Pueblo region has long been recognized as a cohesive culture area, but an in-depth examination of the Pueblo region as a linguistic area has not previously been done. Because a linguistic area is by definition an area in which linguistic features have spread through diffusion, traits which are widespread for other reasons (e.g., genetic inheritance or independent parallel development) must be eliminated as evidence for a Pueblo LA. The methodological approach which I adopt emphasizes the …

Text And Context Of The Suwo': Bribri Oral Tradition., Carla Victoria Jara Jan 1995

Text And Context Of The Suwo': Bribri Oral Tradition., Carla Victoria Jara

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation comprises the analysis of six extensive texts in Bribri, a Chibchan language spoken in Costa Rica, Central America. The theoretical framework is based mainly on M.A.K. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan's social-semiotic perspective of text analysis and on Joseph Grimes' analysis of discourse. In order to characterize this genre within its context of discourse, the three components of context, i.e., field, tenor and mode, have been defined for the corpus of texts. To determine how texture and structure, the basic properties of text, are displayed, one text is analyzed in detail and the results are compared with the other …

Development Of An English For Gospel Purposes Vocabulary List: The Latter-Day Saint Lexicon As A Second Language, Jennifer H. Burrill Jan 1995

Development Of An English For Gospel Purposes Vocabulary List: The Latter-Day Saint Lexicon As A Second Language, Jennifer H. Burrill

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to explore the non-native English-speaking LDS adult's comprehension of the English LDS lexicon. Stahle (1981) conducted a study of the LDS lexicon which established at least 249 words as "basic" vocabulary. The current study had two foci: it first sought to determine how difficult these words were in both English and Spanish for native Spanish-speaking LDS adults living in the U.S. To assess this, a dual-language vocabulary instrument was administered to 245 subjects from Texas, California, and Utah. Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis was used to calculate difficulty levels of words and these values were plotted two-dimensionally …

Chix Nix Bundle-O-Stix: A Feminist Critique Of The Disaggregation Of Property, Jeanne L. Schroeder Nov 1994

Chix Nix Bundle-O-Stix: A Feminist Critique Of The Disaggregation Of Property, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Michigan Law Review

Property was dead, to begin with. The coroner, Wesley Newcomb Hohfeld, revealed that the unity, tangibility, and objectivity of property perceived by our ancestors was a phantom. Property is, in fact, merely a "bundle of sticks." When conceptualized as a collection of rights, property loses its distinctive qualities and its essence. It therefore does not, or at least should not, exist. Without unity and physicality, property loses its objectivity and can only be a myth. The rabble might still believe in the old gods of property, but the educated "specialists" now know that this was vulgar superstition. Once the populace …

On Lexical And Syntactic Processing Of Bangla Language By Computer., Probal Sengupta Dr. Aug 1994

On Lexical And Syntactic Processing Of Bangla Language By Computer., Probal Sengupta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A distinctive intelligent trait of human beings is the ability to carry out meaningful communication through language. The communication may be direct as in spoken conversation or indirect as in written form, through the audio-visual media, etc. Linguistic ability in humans have fascinated scholars ever since man first learnt to use language. Linguistics, the branch of study involved in studying the nature of human linguistic communication, is perhaps as old as language itself. The invention of the computer added a new dimension to linguistics. Making the computer emu- late human linguistic behaviour was taken up as a challenge by computer …

Factor Analytic Study Of Spatial Abilities In Second-Grade, English-Speaking Navajo And Non-Navajo Children, Laurie Sullivan-Sakaeda

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was conducted to continue the investigation of apparent differences in cognitive abilities between Navajo Indian children and non-Navajo children. Subjects were 248 second-grade students, ranging from 7 to 9 years old. The Navajo sample lived in the Shiprock, New Mexico, area of the Navajo Indian Reservation, and the non-Navajo sample lived on the east side of Salt Lake City, Utah. Data were collected using six tests designed to measure spatial abilities in primary grade children. Results indicated that the non-Navajo children scored significantly higher on two individual tests and on the total test score under timed conditions, with …

Multivalued Approach For Uncertainty Management., Deba Prasad Mandal Dr. Feb 1994

Multivalued Approach For Uncertainty Management., Deba Prasad Mandal Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Real life problems are rarely free from uncertainty which usually emerges from the deficiencies of information available from a situation. The defi- ciencies may result from incomplete, imprecise, not fully reliable, vague or contradictory information depending on the problem. Management of uncer- tainty in a decision making system has been an important research problem for many years.Until the inception of the concept of fuzzy set theory in 1965 (1), the theory of probability and statistics was the primary mathematical tool for modeling uncertainty in a system/situation. Fuzzy set theory has shown enormous proinise in handling uncertaintics to a reasonable extent …

Wanderers In The Promised Land: A Study Of The Exodus Motif In The Book Of Mormon And Holy Bible, Bruce J. Boehm Jan 1994

Wanderers In The Promised Land: A Study Of The Exodus Motif In The Book Of Mormon And Holy Bible, Bruce J. Boehm

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Lehi’s exodus to the promised land is only the first of a series of exoduses occurring throughout the Book of Mormon. Indeed, Lehi’s exodus becomes mere precedent for later flights into the wilderness by Nephi, Mosiah, Alma1, Limhi, and the Anti-Nephi-Lehies. For the Nephites, continuing exodus is not merely historical fact. Understanding the biblical exodus as a type and shadow, the Nephites come to see their wandering as a metaphor of their spiritual condition. Thus, even centuries after Lehi’s arrival in the promised land, Nephite prophets recognize their status as “wanderers in a strange land” (Alma 13:23). As did Abraham, …

What's In A Name? Book Of Mormon Language, Names, And [Metonymic] Naming, Gordon C. Thomasson Jan 1994

What's In A Name? Book Of Mormon Language, Names, And [Metonymic] Naming, Gordon C. Thomasson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Anthropological perspectives lend insight on names and on the social and literary function of names in principle and in the Book of Mormon. A discussion of the general function of names in kinship; secret names; and names, ritual, and rites of passage precedes a Latter-day Saint perspective. Names and metonymy are used symbolically. Examples include biblical and Book of Mormon metonymic naming, nomenclature, and taxonomy. Biblical laws of purity form the foundation for a pattern of metonymic associations with the name Lamanite, where the dichotomy of clean/unclean is used to give name to social alienation and pollution.

Of Pigeonholes And Prospective Jurors, Bill Piatt Jan 1994

Of Pigeonholes And Prospective Jurors, Bill Piatt

Faculty Articles

Serving on a jury is one of the most integral components of participation in our democratic society. Everyday the judicial system places their confidence in the juror’s ability to abandon their emotions and predilections in order to reach an impartial decision. Given the frequency in which the courts entrust such a responsibility to monolingual English speakers, why have they not afforded the same deference to their bilingual counterparts?

The Supreme Court’s holding in Hernandez v. New York, essentially created precedent that would prevent bilingual speakers from being selected to perform jury service; the rationale being that bilingual jurors would not …

Narrative And Representation In French Colonial Literature Of Indochina., Jean Marie Turcotte Walls Jan 1994

Narrative And Representation In French Colonial Literature Of Indochina., Jean Marie Turcotte Walls

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study focuses on the establishment and critical legitimation of colonial literature as a genre during the period of intense colonial development in France from approximately 1871-1930. Fictional accounts of the French involvement in Indochina are used to examine the paradoxes of colonial representation. Les Civilises by Claude Farrere, Le Kilometre 83 by Henri Daguerches, and Sur la Route Mandarine by Roland Dorgeles are examined in terms of the inconsistencies and contradictions which emerge from the efforts of the narrator/colonizer to inscribe and represent the other in a composite colonial system. These texts are examined in terms of three textual …

The Stylistic Mechanics Of Implicitness: Entailment, Presupposition, And Implicature In The Work Of Ernest Hemingway And Tim O'Brien., Donna Glee Williams Jan 1994

The Stylistic Mechanics Of Implicitness: Entailment, Presupposition, And Implicature In The Work Of Ernest Hemingway And Tim O'Brien., Donna Glee Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The discipline of linguistics has identified three patterns through which unstated information may be conveyed: entailment, presupposition, and implicature. Using these theoretical constructs, analysts may determine systematically how propositions which are never asserted may nonetheless be communicated. In the old writers' maxim "Show me; don't tell me," "showing" corresponds to implicit communication of unstated material, while "telling" corresponds to the overt assertion of the proposition of interest. Examination of texts by Hemingway and O'Brien reveals carefully controlled use of the linguistic strategies of implicitness to suspend meaning between and behind the fixed points of the words on the page. This …

The purpose of this dissertation is to identify and account for the structural and stylistic features of 48 abstracts written by scientists and engineers at the research and development division of a large company. All of the abstracts were published in industry journals and conference papers during 1990 and 1991. The features identified in the abstracts are compared to the suggestions for structure and style found in fifteen textbooks frequently used in university technical writing courses. Textbook suggestions for structural features include purpose statement, scope, methods, results, conclusions, and recommendations. Textbook suggestions for stylistic features include eliminating unnecessary words, avoiding …
