The Role Of Language In Identity And Mediating Connection For Fijian College Students, Grace Taito Tora
The Role Of Language In Identity And Mediating Connection For Fijian College Students, Grace Taito Tora
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the role of language in constructing identity and promoting belonging for seventeen Fijian college students at one U.S. based university in the Pacific Rim. Focus group interviews were analyzed for how students described the role that language played in constructing student identity and mediating connection. Analysis was grounded in post-structural perspectives of identity alongside vā – the Oceanic notion that encompasses identity and belonging. Students described themes of native language proficiency in reinforcing kinship relationships and in participating in cultural traditions and practices. They also expressed other ways of maintaining vā without proficiency in their native languages. …
The Roles Of Library In Digital Language Documentation Of The Ethnic Minorities Of Bangladesh, Md. Aktarul Islam, Md. Habibur Rahman
The Roles Of Library In Digital Language Documentation Of The Ethnic Minorities Of Bangladesh, Md. Aktarul Islam, Md. Habibur Rahman
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
From the dawn of human civilization, language has been considered a significant medium for conveying ideas, information, viewpoints, and feelings between one person and another or among a group of people. In Bangladesh, Bengali has been used as the medium of education and communication by the majority of the populace where the languages of ethnic minorities face different challenges, and a good number of languages are on the verge of extinction due to the lack of proper conservation policies and other issues. This paper focused on the roles of libraries in language documentation for ethnic minorities by applying the scientific …
Language And Power: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Egypt’S Housing Narratives, Maram Gamal
Language And Power: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Egypt’S Housing Narratives, Maram Gamal
Theses and Dissertations
The issue of housing in Egypt is an evolving historical phenomenon intricately tied to the Egyptian identity, and deeply embedded in the social and political fabric. Common language shapes actual realities and it forms an integral part of the cultural parameters. This research is a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of the housing narrative across four consecutive ruling regimes with distinct political orientations. It deploys a two-stage CDA approach. The first stage involves ideological codification of the narrative to chronologically organize them into their ideological orientations and categories. The second stage historicizes data via a dual approach, namely integrating Norman Fairclough's …
Orality As Aesthetic Device: Articulating Language, Religion, And Authority In Mohamed Akounad’S Tawargit D Imik, Mohamed El Jarari, Salaheddine Belarbi
Orality As Aesthetic Device: Articulating Language, Religion, And Authority In Mohamed Akounad’S Tawargit D Imik, Mohamed El Jarari, Salaheddine Belarbi
Journal of Amazigh Studies
This article explores Mohamed Akounad's novel Tawargit d imik, which focuses on protagonist Ssi Brahim who struggles to convey the essence of his religious sermons to an exclusively amazigh audience amidst societal opposition. By examining Ssi Brahim's character as the author's alter ego, the study aims to assess the novel's portrayal of religious concerns and activism for Tamazight and identity, particularly in relation to orality. Employing a sociolinguistic approach drawing from Bourdieu's Language and Symbolic Power, the analysis delves into the intersection of religion, authority, and language, placing orality at the heart of their role within the narrative. This …
The Sources And Consequences Of Disputes Over Contractual Meaning, Randy D. Gordon
The Sources And Consequences Of Disputes Over Contractual Meaning, Randy D. Gordon
Faculty Scholarship
With some frequency, parties agree to the particular words used in a contract they sign, only to later disagree as to the meaning of those words and their legal effect. That is, they each assent to something, but that “something” is something different for each of them. In this Article, I first categorize and trace the sources of recurring points of disagreement as a matter of language and linguistics. Then, I look at the consequences of a dispute that leads a fact finder to conclude that the parties genuinely did not agree to the same thing, which is to say …
Language Play And Racial Dysphemism In The Marrakchi Language Space, Spencer Fausel
Language Play And Racial Dysphemism In The Marrakchi Language Space, Spencer Fausel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study seeks to divulge the meaning and popular usage of two phonetically similar yet reportedly distinct dysphemisms spoken and understood in the Marrakchi dialect of Moroccan Arabic (Darija). Darija speakers across the North African lingua-space use the term "qlawi" to denote testicles. In Morocco, speakers utter "qlawi" to express negation or pejorative notions of being, the term commonly wielded to disparage or vituperate a frustrating person or object—drawing connections to the subaltern, the lowly, the destitute, the stupid, the possessionless, and potentially to the racialized (non)object. The word itself can stand as a syntactic substitute for “nothing” in certain …
Trauma-Informed Teaching With Adult English Language Learners: A Study In A Community-Based Organization, Elizabeth Eastman
Trauma-Informed Teaching With Adult English Language Learners: A Study In A Community-Based Organization, Elizabeth Eastman
Doctoral Dissertations
Often, immigrants in the United States have suffered traumatic experiences in their home country, on their journey to the U.S., and/or in their process of acculturation. In English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, symptoms of trauma can interfere with learning and acculturation. Trauma-Informed teaching can meet the needs of students who have been impacted by trauma but it is not often used in ESOL classes. This is due to a lack of teacher training, and a gap in the literature on the effects of the approach and studies that explore the perspectives of the students. Based in phenomenology …

Language And The Lord Of The Rings: The Expansion Of A Universe, Thomas Beutz
Language And The Lord Of The Rings: The Expansion Of A Universe, Thomas Beutz
The Criterion
Tommy Beutz’s essay, “Language and The Lord of the Rings: The Expansion of a Universe” explores J.R.R. Tolkien’s world-building through the lens of linguistics. Beutz argues that Tolkien’s creation of Middle-Earth, anchored in his invented languages, extends beyond the bounds of the text. Drawing on Tolkien’s background as a philologist, Beutz contends that the languages of Middle-Earth are not mere literary devices but rather the foundation of its entire mythology. By examining linguistic markers embedded in the primary text, Beutz reveals how Tolkien hints at a larger world outside the narrative. Through an analysis of historical accounts and characters’ …
Seventy-Two Words For Potato: Irish Language Sources For Food History, Mairtin Macconiomaire, Dónall Ó Braonáin
Seventy-Two Words For Potato: Irish Language Sources For Food History, Mairtin Macconiomaire, Dónall Ó Braonáin
Books/Book Chapters
The Irish word for generous is flaithiúil, which stems from the word ‘flaith’ or prince, so in Irish to be generous is to be princely. The Irish for the Department of Justice is An Roinn Dlí agus Cirt—literally, the department of the law and what is right: the Irish language separates the law from what is right or just. The Irish saying ‘Fáílte Uí Cheallaigh’—the welcome of the O’Kellys—carries memories of an exceptional hospitality event that happened seven centuries ago in east Galway/ south Roscommon but is still preserved in today’s speech.10 This chapter seeks to discuss the wealth of …

Communication is often impaired in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD), typically secondary to sensorimotor deficits impacting voice and speech. Language may also be diminished in PD, particularly for production and comprehension of verbs. Evidence exists that verb processing is influenced by motor system modulation suggesting that verb deficits in PD are underpinned by similarities in the neural representations of actions that span motor and semantic systems. Conversely, subtle differences in cognition in PD may explain difficulty in processing of complex syntactic forms, which increases cognitive demand and is linked to verb use. Here we investigated whether optimizing motor system support …
The Canonical Significance Of Mindset In Romans 8:5–14 (Φρονέω And Its Cognates): Implications For Biblical Interpretation, Application, And Evangelism, Denise Anne Pass
The Canonical Significance Of Mindset In Romans 8:5–14 (Φρονέω And Its Cognates): Implications For Biblical Interpretation, Application, And Evangelism, Denise Anne Pass
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The term mindset is common in today’s vernacular, but its significance in the canon has scarcely been explored. Cultures throughout time have viewed mindsets as something that human volition alone can affect. Yet the inability to maintain the mindset God requires of his people has prevented them from faithfully keeping the covenant and rightly interpreting Scripture. Mindsets are habitual or innate mental attitudes that determine how one will interpret life situations and the Word of God, impacting relationships with others and one’s ability to love God and walk in obedience to His Word. Paul’s extensive use of φρονέω echoes back …

Exploring Early Language Acquisition Through English And French, Rebecca C. Aguilar
Exploring Early Language Acquisition Through English And French, Rebecca C. Aguilar
Honors Capstones
Knowing that there is no singular event that leads to learning a language, and factoring in the extent an individual’s culture can affect language learning, this study emphasizes the importance of a cross-linguistic approach to continue to broaden the scope of language acquisition research. The primary objective is to identify and analyze the critical commonalities in the initial stages of learning English and French as first languages through two major categories: speech/language and culture. This project carried out an analytical review of 24 pieces of relevant literature, in both languages, in an effort to highlight key findings. Those findings include: …
Visibility In The Redacted Space: What Censored Poetry Reveals About Guantanamo Bay Prison And The Individuals Trapped Inside, Chase Portaro
Visibility In The Redacted Space: What Censored Poetry Reveals About Guantanamo Bay Prison And The Individuals Trapped Inside, Chase Portaro
English and Creative Writing Capstone Projects
This paper discusses what readers can understand about Guantanamo Bay and the larger setting of America's Islamophobic "War on Terror" through the poetry of individuals detained inside of Guantanamo Bay Military Prison. In 2002, Mark Falkoff, with the help of a team of lawyers, translators, and human rights advocates published a collection of twenty-two detainee-authored poems, titled Poems from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak. This paper discusses the emerging neo-colonial subjectivity of America's War on Terror, as it analyzes the available writings of Guantanamo poets. The new language of subjectivity of victims of contemporary American empire is defined by suppression, as …
Vulnerability Of Semantic Networks In Multiple Sclerosis: An Analysis Of Verbal Fluency Data, Sophia Lall
Vulnerability Of Semantic Networks In Multiple Sclerosis: An Analysis Of Verbal Fluency Data, Sophia Lall
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Word finding difficulty is a frequently reported subjective cognitive concern among persons with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS). Word-finding relies on several information retrieval processes, including search and retrieval from the conceptual store, the phonological store, the syllabary, as well as other stores of information. Neuropsychological assessments, including the semantic verbal fluency measure, can be used to measure word retrieval abilities. Despite this, the MS research literature shows that neuropsychological assessment of semantic verbal fluency yields mixed results in detecting word-finding difficulties. While some studies report finding statistically lower semantic fluency scores in pwMS relative to healthy controls (HC), others found no …
Is The Language Surrounding Current Punk Culture Signaling A Watering Down Of Dissent? Culture Mapping The Signifying Language Of Present-Day Punk Against Original Punk To See If It Is Still Addressing Societal Issues And Challenging The Status Quo., Marie Lena Tupot
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Punk, originating from the economic turmoil of 1970s Britain, has transitioned into the digital realm, shedding its traditional symbols of rebellion while posing questions about contemporary dissent, such as: Are Punk ideals still addressing societal issues and challenging the status quo, or are they becoming more superficial or commercialized? Or are expressions of dissent genuine and rooted in lived experiences, or are they being appropriated for commercial gain? This study delves into the language of the shifting subcultures of Punk, silently thriving online through Cyberpunks, Cypherpunks, Anarchists, Anarcho-capitalists, and Cryptopunks. Each subgroup expresses rebellion uniquely: Cyberpunks through hacking, Cypherpunks through …

Through The Gendered Language Glass: How Gendered Language Shapes Mental Representations Of Gender And Why It Matters, Emily Roberts
World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis explores the relationship between gendered-languages and mental perceptions of gender. Compiling various studies that evidence a strong link between gendered language and gender bias, the research creates a framework for discussing the potential gender-equalizing effects of gender-fair language. The paper focuses on the conversation concerning gendered language in France, especially discussing the role of the French Academy in establishing and legitimizing language practices.
Person-First Versus Identity-First Language For Mental Illness: A Discourse Analysis, Amanda M. Cox
Person-First Versus Identity-First Language For Mental Illness: A Discourse Analysis, Amanda M. Cox
University Honors Program Senior Projects
A general consensus on the most appropriate language in reference to people with disabilities has yet to be established. Advocates of person-first language, such as a person with autism, argue that such language emphasizes the whole person, as opposed to focusing on their disability or impairment (Granello & Gibbs, 2014). However, those in favor of identity-first language, such as an autistic person, believe that this language usage allows individuals to claim their diagnosis, as there is nothing inherently wrong with the adjectival form (Dunn & Andrews, 2015). There is a lack of research of written works regarding whether person-first or …
Effects Of Americanization On The Immigrant Student Population, Jose Lopez
Effects Of Americanization On The Immigrant Student Population, Jose Lopez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This senior capstone study aims to investigate the impact of Americanization on immigrant students whose first language is not English and the effects of Proposition 227. This law, which cut all state funding for bilingual programs, prompted significant changes in language education policies. Through surveys, this research seeks to determine whether Proposition 227 has influenced students' cultural identity or academic success. Additionally, this study examines California education standards to understand how they influence language education practices. Interviews with teachers will provide insights into their approaches to teaching immigrant students and fostering cultural inclusivity in the classroom. This capstone aims to …
Online Deception: The Impact Of Language In Text-Based Deception Detection, Stephanie Dayle Avila
Online Deception: The Impact Of Language In Text-Based Deception Detection, Stephanie Dayle Avila
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
In today’s digital age, spreading false information online can have serious consequences, from affecting elections to undermining public health efforts. Despite the issue's importance, there’s been relatively little research into better understanding how people make decisions about lies and misinformation online. My project dives into this challenge by exploring how specific language cues, like grammar errors or unusual word choices, influence people’s perception of statements in terms of deceit online. I examined how people react to these cues through three separate but related studies when reading truthful and deceptive statements. The first two studies showed that true statements with grammatical …
Investigating The Production And Perception Of Lexical Stress In English As A Second Language: A Cue-Weighting Approach, Natalia Irene Minjarez Oppenheimer
Investigating The Production And Perception Of Lexical Stress In English As A Second Language: A Cue-Weighting Approach, Natalia Irene Minjarez Oppenheimer
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Cue-Weighting Transfer Hypothesis states that (a) listeners weight acoustic cues according to how informative they are in signaling a lexical contrast in their L1, and (b) that listeners transfer their cue weightings from the L1 to the L2, using those cues that are important in the L1 to perceive lexical stress in the L2 (Tremblay et al., 2021). Most of the Spanish-English bilinguals in our region are highly proficient in both languages, but differ in their language dominance spectrums. That is, they can handle both languages with ease, but are usually more dominant in one of them. Because of …

Adapting Language Development Research Paradigms To Online Testing: Data From Preferential Looking, Word Learning And Vocabulary Assessment In Toddlers, Delphine K.L. Nguyen, Nadine Fitzpatrick, Caroline Floccia
School of Psychology
During the recent pandemic, it became necessary to adapt lab-based studies to online experiments. To investigate the impact of online testing on the quality of data, we focus on three paradigms widely used in infant research: a word recognition task using the Intermodal Preferential Looking Paradigm, a word learning task using the Switch task, and a language assessment tool (WinG) where children identify a target word amongst a set of picture cards. Our results for synchronous and asynchronous studies provide support for the robustness of online testing. In Experiment 1, robust word recognition was found in 24-month-old toddlers. In Experiment …

Clarice Lispector: From Brazil To The World, Earl Fitz
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Clarice Lispector: From Brazil to the World explains why the Brazilian master was so transformative of modern Brazilian literature and why she has become such a celebrity in the world literature arena. This book also shows why Lispector is not one writer, as many think, but many writers. By offering close readings of her novels, stories, and nonfiction pieces, Earl E. Fitz shows the diverse sides of her literary world. Chapters cover Lispector’s devotion to language and its connection to identity; her political engagement; and her humor, eroticism, and struggle with the concept of God. The last chapter seeks to …
What’S Your Story? Perceptions Of Diversity In Faith-Based Organizational Contexts, Martha N. Mcclure
What’S Your Story? Perceptions Of Diversity In Faith-Based Organizational Contexts, Martha N. Mcclure
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
Organizations for the past several decades have made diversity a top priority. While diversity and inclusion can often be interpreted as synonymous terms, distinguishing between representative diversity and inclusive diversity is necessary for positive intergroup contact among working teams. The purpose of this quantitative study was to evaluate the effect of a missions training course on individuals' perceptions of what constitutes a diverse and inclusive work environment. Using the personal stories of diverse panelists and pre and post-test survey research, the effect on perceptions of four constructs of diversity: gender, race/ethnicity, age, and language were examined. While study findings did …

The number of Armenians in Lebanon exceeded one hundred thousand inhabitants before 1975, the date of the start of the civil war. Currently, the Armenian community of Lebanon is endangered, particularly due to its language and the current demographic decline. In 2010, UNESCO included Western Armenian on the list of endangered languages. The same year, filmmaker Vatché Boulghourjian directed a fiction film in Western Armenian, The Fifth Column. The film has a significant cinematic language both by its content and its form. The usage of the Western Armenian language by the characters within the film reframes the plot in …

Shaping Character: The Role Of Mythology In Society, Jaclyn Weist
Masters Theses
Throughout history, man has told stories. Some stories were written on walls, tablets, or bits of parchment. Others have been passed down to posterity through oral tradition. Every culture worldwide has a rich tapestry of legends and myths. It is my intent to demonstrate that these stories use the tools of character development within their various plot lines to both express and shape beliefs, superstitions, and life lessons. Whether they are religious in nature or simply trying to make sense of the world, these stories, myths, and legends have played a part in shaping society into what it is today.
Gender Bias In Natural Gender Language And Grammatical Gender Language Within Children's Literature, Kaleigh Marie White Smolinski
Gender Bias In Natural Gender Language And Grammatical Gender Language Within Children's Literature, Kaleigh Marie White Smolinski
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There has been much research on the connection between language and gender bias but there is little comparing natural gender language, grammatical gender language, and gender bias. This research is important because it can offer an understanding of gender bias and how these biases are reinforced in different languages. The purpose of this study is to understand how gender biases are represented in children’s literature in different languages. The research questions how gender biases are found in both natural gender and grammatical gender languages within children’s literature. Then questions if there are any differences in these biases. This study compared …
Deficit-Oriented Language Use: Understanding The Effects Of Deficit-Oriented Labeling On First-Generation Students, Jeff Foulkes, Jeff Foulkes
Deficit-Oriented Language Use: Understanding The Effects Of Deficit-Oriented Labeling On First-Generation Students, Jeff Foulkes, Jeff Foulkes
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this sequential mixed methods study was to describe how first- generation undergraduate college students perceive that deficit-oriented and strengths- based language has impacted them during their first year of study. A further purpose of this study was to identify how these students overcome the negative influences that are associated with deficit-oriented language.
Methodology: A sequential mixed methods research design was chosen to address the research questions for this study. Using a convenience sampling approach, the survey was disseminated to all first-year students in a specific program at a single university. Once the quantitative survey data were …
